Dancing in a Minefield - Plushgun There's a grand tradition of sleek electro-pop with a slightly overwrought sense of the emotional that was re-popularized by The Postal Service in the early part of the decade, but really has its roots back in the 80s. Plushgun is yet another fine entry into that tradition. When everything works on their debut Pins and Panzers , you get delightful, airy, energetic pop hooks and a sense of good feeling about the world at large. By far the best example is the [...]

My buddy Vin and I arrived at the show just in time to see Whiskey Daredevils, a local band with a lot of buzz. They started off their set by saying "Thanks for coming out on Wednesday night, we know you could be at home watching Modern Family." That's true, it's a good show, which stars Ohio native Ed O'Neill, but thankfully there's always Hulu. Whiskey Daredevils often play around the area, but for some reason I have not seen them before. We both have heard a lot of positive hype about them, so we pretty excited that we were [...]

This weekend managed to prove once again that I am getting too old to party like a rock star two nights in a row. The whole thing began Friday night where I set out to, and I quote myself here, "get Lucero drunk", and I am happy to announce that the mission was a complete success. The trade off of that is that recollection of the show is slightly hazy. A lot of the reviews I read leading up to Lucero's show here were about the crowd. That frat boy concentration levels were reportedly getting dangerously high, but [...]

Free admission, and free booze...for reals?? The Wednesday, November 25th edition of Cinema 16 is being held at one of Chicago's most unique and intimate independent venues, Wicker Park's Chopin Theatre . Admission and cocktails will be complimentary, courtesy of Drambuie, the fabled Scottish spiced whiskey. Chandeliers , a Chicago-based musical collective that has [...]

With the first steps into their building, I was immediately blown away by the San Francisco Conservatory of Music . The new campus on Oak Street is gorgeous, and I was lucky enough to attend their first annual Tuned In fundraiser. All groups performing during the evening had to have either a current conservatory student or an alumni in their membership. With those kind of credentials, I knew the caliber of talent was going to be high. Perhaps I'd encounter Yngwie Malmsteen's and Victor Wooten's [...]
So, West Coast. What up. Heard that Eyehategod was gonna roll through next month. Them Louisiana boys are some big-time shit-kickers. It ain't called the Dirty South for nothin', you know. Our boy The WZA'd saw them in Austin not too long ago and almost didn't make it out alive. You better stock up on whiskey. And heroin. And horny sisters. Just want things to run smoothly, bro.Oh, you need an

How Big Star let me down. Look, here's my number one pet peeve in the restaurant business: you do not close your kitchen early. Ever. I've worked in the service industry. I managed a restaurant that was one off the few late night eating destinations in Chicago at the time. Yes, on a slow night the kitchen would start closing up and cleaning everything early, but if we closed at 2 a.m., and someone walked in at 1:59 [...]

My coworker/friendo/fellow film photographer Ken Wu went to Tokyo last month, as I may have mentioned. Saw the sites, including the Studio Ghibli museum (fasho), and reports back with photos plus this time lapse he managed to capture from his hotel room. One can assume he was sipping some Suntory whiskey as the shutter repeatedly went off. Relaxing times. [...]

Cory Chisel (Cory Chisel and the Wandering Sons) exudes a forcefield of palpable anguish. It squeezes through his pores and squinted eyes and lassos ears and bleeding hearts through swaying seranades you'd expect to hear on a back porch next to rocking chairs and whiskey bottles, overlooking vast fields and accompanied by choruses of chirping crickets. Chisel's voice, beguilingly accurate and smooth as glove leather, slides in like a slightly frayed slip-knot, applying steady and sufficient pressure as it pulls itself with just enough friction over the highs and lows of soulful full-band arrangements, joined by Adriel Harris' delicate [...]

For ramblings on how I came to compile this list go here . And for commentary on previous selections: [ #50-46 ] [ #45-41 ] 40. Goodbye Doris - Fox Jaws (2007) Barrie's Fox Jaws are easily one of my favorite live bands, and I make a point of trying [...]

Okay it was over a week ago really, but I think I can be afforded some poetic license for the sake of an Indeep reference. The Internets Celebrities had been invited by Checkmate co-star Ben Popken to attend the first Consumerist meetup, show some of our videos and talk to the crowd. The event was indeed a " great success " as we definitely won over some new fans that night. Meanwhile, just outside the private room, Botanica bar was crawling with attractive marketing folk peddling their [...]
