The last time I checked in on Jill Andrews, she was aiming to unseat Neko Case as alt-country's finest singer with the Everybodyfields . She's since gone solo and sounds no less heartbreaking - here's a taste of what she's up to now, a twangy take on Fleetwood Mac's "Dreams" (which once made an excellent cover subject for Whiskeytown, you'll remember). Somebody send this to Taylor Swift.

As we leave the 2000-2009 decade behind, we've been looking at a lot of the bands that didn't quite make it. Esteemed HT editor Scott Bernstein had his picks in a few months back, and here are some of mine. I was surprised to see we overlapped only once, but that says a lot more about the scope of bands that thrived in the decade but that we (probably) won't see again. I didn't have room here for all the supergroups. I loved the JoJo Hermann/Dickinson Brothers combo Smiling Assassins, [...]
It's been 10 years since the release of Heartbreaker, Ryan Adams' first post-Whiskeytown effort, and these days he is sober, married and seemingly well-balanced. Unless you were paying attention, you might not know the whole story—with the endless string of movie-star girlfriends and the drug-fueled, spoiled-rock-star antics. There was a time when Adams physically threatened [...]

Before I delve into 2005 and the onset of The Cardinals in my spotlight , there's still plenty of music that needs to be (over)examined. Now, I don't follow much less obsess over collecting each piece of music that any artist records like I do Ryan Adams, but from what I can tell, he's part of a select group of musicians that constantly offer up bonus tracks with each release. Forget all his 'unreleased sessions' or rejected albums for the moment; Ryan Adams' extra songs recorded alongside those that made final album cuts still stack up higher than most [...]

One Wolf - Backyard.mp3 (4 MB) Lubbock's One Wolf will be touring through town on Feb. 3, playing Notsuoh with Lazio. After parting ways with his old band, Daniel Markham started One Wolf. Influenced by bands that range from Tears for Fears and New Order to Hank Williams and Whiskeytown, Markham decided to create something that fell somewhere between those two extremes - and out of that idea grew One Wolf. One Wolf's solo songs range from spaghetti western to sci-fi explosion, helped by producer Jason Martin (Starflyer [...]

It rained today. Lots. Somehow though, I managed to find a two hour pocket of dry weather to quickly dash about the city, snapping a few pics and zipping in and out of a few of my favourite shops. I discovered two new magazines at my beloved Mag Nation (seriously, I could live there - coffee, couches, mags... what more could you need?) Dumbo feather, pass it on (visit the website for fantastic deals on both current and back issues) is [...]

A Phantasy Tour user named Mod_Ov3rkill recently started a thread on PT to share rare tracks from the Trey.com A/V room . These tracks were posted for a short period of time and if you're like me, you haven't been collecting them. Other PT users have helped the cause by uploading the tracks that the original poster didn't. Who says PT isn't good for anything? Big Red recently posted an interview on his Facebook page that got us excited for his upcoming February tour with Classic TAB . [...]

Though much of what I share on PHW is certainly rooted in folk and Americana traditions, I don't post a whole lot of pure "alt. country" music. This isn't so much by choice as it is the result of a once exciting genre growing up and getting, well, kind of boring. I still love listening to the classics of the genre's mid-to-late 90's heyday, but most of what I hear these days just doesn't do it for me. That is until I heard Terre Haute, IN's Grant Gilman the other day. Gilman's a young singer-songwriter/home wrecker whose hard [...]
Alright, so we just finished wrapping up the 00s, and it's left some of us (namely me) feeling a bit nostalgic for a decade that went by way too quickly. It left me thinking about things I ruined or things I succeeded in, but most of all, it's left me reflecting upon the most disappointing moments in my life. Oddly, I deflect my own animosity for my life, and turn to the world of music. Below is the five most disappointing things for me, musically, in the decade that passed. Some have a chance at redemption, but others, well, you [...]
Hot on the heels of the implosion of the mercurial and semi-brilliant Whiskeytown, Heartbreaker seemed to signal Ryan Adams as the leading light of the sometimes moribund alt-country movement. But ten years on, it looks like a freak - the one complete, coherent, riveting statement where we saw Ryan Adams channel Ryan Adams instead of the chameleon who half-heartedly channeled his heroes on later records. It's an album of maturity, hope, despair and promise that's lifts your spirit every time it breaks your heart. Heartbreaker - Ryan Adams

Athens singer-songwriter Vic Chestnutt died yesterday at the age of 45. Paralyzed as the result of a car accident since 1993, Chestnutt has released 12 studio albums over the past two decades, including this year's critically acclaimed At The Cut . I saw the story this morning on MSN . I first heard Chestnutt's about 10 or 11 years ago as part of a compilation called Exposed Roots: The Best Of Alt. Country . On a double CD set that featured several artists I was quite familiar [...]

It's the end of a decade, a decade of music that we are pretty happy to have been a part of. Since 2003, Each Note Secure has attempted to cover the local music scene for you, while also tracking the national and international acts that we loved. We are and have always been fans, and I think thats why I wanted to throw this list together. So many great albums were released over the course of the last ten years, and mentioning them all would be impossible. I tried to give only one spot [...]

Present # 3's focus is on another classic, 'best of the decade' based album, which you may know by it's Christian name, Ryan Adam's Heartbreaker . Fresh off his split with Whiskeytown, Ryan had to go prove himself without the crutch of his band mates and the critical acclaim they drudged up together. But he didn't flinch and ended up making so tender and so brilliant, that he never had to stand next to that shadow again. The following show is from the solo tour that supported it and highlights the [...]

The penultimate part of my countdown of the top 110 albums of the decade. You can find 110-101 here , 100-91 here , 90-81 here , 80-71 here , 70-61 here , 60-51 here , 50-41 here , 40-31 here , and 30-21 here . Now, here's 20-11... 20. So this is it. My favorite full-length albums of the year. So many other blogs post their top songs of the year, but I guess I'm a bit more old-school (and probably older) than most of them. I prefer the album format rather then just ranking singles against one another. I posted Part I of this list yesterday, but there are so many good albums from 2009 that I had to leave off the list completely (unless I was going to make it an even 100). Maybe next year, right? Also, fuck all the [...]
Born at the wrong time, these are indie-rock ringers who've come together to get back to the canyon and gaze at the mellow sundown of yesteryear. You'll want to join them. Are we experiencing another country-rock resurgence? Aren't we always? Well, let's see: After the alt-country boom that peaked in the mid-'90s around the time Uncle Tupelo broke up and their Lennon and McCartney (you can decide which was which) formed new bands, Wilco and Son Volt grew less "country" with each new release. Subsequently, Whiskeytown broke up, as Ryan Adams explored increasingly non-rootsy avenues, as did Old 97's [...]
