Stereo Subversion lovingly profiles singer-songwriter Sufjan Stevens and his music. Myspace has added music charts. SEE interviews Charles F of Winter Gloves . "I don't think we have this Montreal sound at all," Charles says. "For me, the Montreal sound a couple of years ago was Arcade Fire, Wolf Parade, and a bunch of bands influenced by British music and being dark with a lot of reverb. [...]

It's going to be my album of the year, at least based on its placing in my top 5 of all albums released this decade, but I still didn't know for certain every lyric to every song on the album, which was mildly annoying. Sunset Rubdown hadn't included a lyric sheet with the album's release and although I'd waded through the threads on the Wolf Parade forums and on songmeanings.net at various times this year, there were enough discrepancies to throw me off on more than one lyric in more than one [...]

Buy the Bangkok EP by Malente & Dex HERE Malente & Dex ft. New Kidz - Lions (Douster Remix) (ALT) Listening to a Heatwave BBC Radio 1 Mix with Erin last night, we couldn't help but notice how far ahead of Canada the BBC is in terms of the diversity of music that they play. BBC Radio 1 has no problem mixing grimey UK funky with proper electronic dancehall music, and we [...]
If you are thinking about joining a gang, you might as well join one that could eventually master funk-pop. Filed somewhere in my music collection between Wolfmother and Wolf Parade, Wolf Gang has now found a home in my headphones. Max McElligott, who occasionally roles with a small musical entourage, is ...

In the Book Notes series, authors create and discuss a music playlist that relates in some way to their recently published book. Joshua Gaylord's debut novel, Hummingbirds , caused Kirkus reviews to call him "an impressive new voice in American fiction," and I have to agree. Gaylord eloquently paints the relationships and interactions of his characters, both adult and teen, male and female, with rare and impressive insight into human character in this compelling story of an all-girls high school.. Library Journal wrote of the book: [...]

What was word on the cyberstreet yesterday became official today: the War Room is closing its doors on November 30th . Following in the footsteps of King Cobra , which closed this past February, the eclectic concert and dance venue with the coolest rooftop bar around is calling it quits after five years. Bummer. I didn't make it there nearly as often as other venues in the neighborhood, but the times I did were always memorable. The first show I saw there was Wolf Parade (no shit) and the last was [...]

Winter will soon be upon us, which means more layered clothing and less outdoor activities. If you're like me, the thought of transitioning from the warm and energizing days of summer to the frostbitten and melancholy days of winter is as shocking as stepping from a sauna into a popsicle. Fortunately, for our emotional well-being, little reminders of summer pop up periodically during these frigid months and warm things up a bit. Land of Talk did just that. The opening band, a Los Angeles power-pop quartet called Eulogies , merely broke the silence [...]

This was the greatest decade of music for me as a fan. There were so many incredible albums, almost all by bands I'd never even heard of in 2000, discovered almost entirely through the same musical venue that you are reading write now -- the Internet. At the dawn of the decade, I was approaching a rock fan milestone that presumably signaled the end of my interest in cool new music (I turned 30 in 2001), while at the same time, the rock music industry (ie. whatever they played on the radio) had devolved into a hybrid of cheap rap-rock [...]
First, lets get this straight - this band is not a pack of wolves, despite their name, and therefore they do not bite - so have no fear, future fans. However, their musical combination of dance-rock-electro packs quite a punch, something that won't hurt much if you're willing to give it a try. Now that's out of the way, you can read on. We Are Wolves , the Quebecois trio, will be releasing their third album Invisible Violence courtesy of Dare to Care Records , February 2, 2010, as their American debut. [...]

Coming straight out of Montreal is Canada's top wolf related band We are Wolves with their third full-length album Invisible Violence . Recorded by Radwan Moumneh (Silver Mt. Zion, Pas Chic Chic) and Hadji Bakara (Wolf Parade, Megasoid) Invisible Violence expands upon there irreverant dance rock with bratty punk ("Holding Hands"), hypnotic electro-pop ("Reaching for the Sky") and moody angular anthem's ("Walking Commotion"). Due for release on February 2, 2010 via Dare to Care Records this three-piece's follow-up to there thrillingly danceable sophomore release Total Magique will entice fans with [...]

Let's recap the week: - As I write this, my car is still in the shop . Based on my last conversation with the mechanic, I'm looking at a 700 dollar repair job. This obviously does not delight me, but it's actually considerably less than I expected. If you combine my transmission issues with that fact that I also need 4 new tires, it's a goddamn miracle that I drove it to Florida last week and got back safely. - Speaking of Florida, my old Floridian stomping grounds popped up twice this week. First, in this post [...]
I have 13 minutes until my oven is done transforming my frozen pizza into a little bit of happiness, so here's a lunchtime song for everyone. You Go On Ahead is another track from Sunset Rubdown 's fourth LP Dragonslayer , released in June of this year. I suspect that for most people, Sunset Rubdown's sound is not as instantly accessible as front-man Spencer Krug 's other project Wolf Parade (song posted here ). However, if you're like me, one of the biggest draws of Wolf Parade is Krug's passion-filled/eccentric [...]

Loch Lomond Night Bats (Hush) [FABLES OF THE RECONSTRUCTION] If local chamber-folk outfit Loch Lomond can be accused of anything, it's being too nice. The band's songs, which take singer Ritchie Young's quivering voice—one that often switches from a deep register to an androgynous falsetto in the same verse—and surround it with layers of baroque instrumentation, have always been pretty. Direct? Not so much. That is, until you hear the band's lovely new EP. Night Bats strives to separate Loch Lomond from the [...]
