"Imagine you're in the middle of a tornado. Trees, pieces of a fence, car parts are all circling around you, your screaming at the top of your lungs and roman candles are shooting out of your stomach...you reach out your hand and someone grabs on." KS. Kelli Schaefer is a raw and undeniable talent. I saw Schaefer at The Woods, Portland a fortnight ago, picked up the six songs she has so far released, and have been pre-occupied by her impact every subsequent day. If you were to suspend belief, [...]

So, I don't come to the record store thing just out of the blue. To be fair, I've worked in TWO record stores to date. Both were Record Worlds—the corporate variety—where it was mandated that all of the employees, except for the managers, sport blue polyester vests. Y'know – to differentiate you from the other riff raff browsing through the import bins or what have you. Record World, both based in malls at the time, wasn't the type of place that would buy used LPs however—it was purely new stuff and catalog items. Which didn't bother me [...]

While taking a trip to Southern California to see my buddies Matt, Cahn And Nick, I was on the hunt for an album that I heard Ken Andrews had produced by a band called Blinker The Star . At the time I was a big fan of the engineering Andrews had done on his own bands release Failure's "Fantastic Planet" . So anything with his name attached I was definitely interested in hearing. Luckily one day while listening to radio in the area they played the single " Below The Sliding Doors" which also had Andrews [...]

Nick Nicely is perhaps the ultimate musical cult hero — he released two singles in the U.K. in the early '80s, both of which earned critical acclaim but gathered little commercial steam, and then he fell below the radar. Nicely's mix of '60s psychedelic influences and the sonic vocabulary of '80s New Wave prefigured the work of artists like Robyn Hitchcock, The Three O'Clock, and XTC's paisley alter egos The Dukes of Stratosphear, but it would take 22 years before anything more was heard from the British singer/songwriter/multi-instru mentalist. When the Psychotropia collection finally arrived in 2004, it [...]

St. Louis' Grace Basement is led by multi-instrumentalist Kevin Buckley who has quite a knack for writing concise pop gems. It's pretty evident from the opening track "There He Goes" that the harmonies and chord minor changes are very infectious, and the addition of fiddle backing is an added bonus. The dance hall influenced melody of "Tilly Lingers" is another catchy gem along the lines of Harry Nilsson and XTC. Unlike the solo approach of the debut album New Sense , Buckley is assisted by guitarist Ben Phillips, bassist Mike Zapf and drummer Sean Price [...]

As the last note ends in IPO New York, I wanted to listen to the latest compilation, David Bash's International Pop Overthrow Vol.12 . This year the bands are more varied and less constricted by genre orthodoxy and this makes for a better and more representative group of power pop bands. There are 3 CDs full of 70 bands and 70 songs, so I'll pick out some of my favorite tracks here. Disc#1: Starting with a bang is expected and [...]

Dirty Sock Funtime Band : Dino-Soaring Note: Dino-Soaring does not appear to be available on any album. However, you can: [ purchase a selection of music from Jack's Big Music Show here ] [ or go here to purchase albums by the Dirty Sock Funtime Band ] Our theme, Cool Kidsongs, is deliberately limited to songs that parents can enjoy as well. So that leaves out songs that are cloyingly sweet, or nauseatingly cute, or just downright irritating. And there are far too [...]

Newly signed to Andy Partridge's Ape House label, the first release from Ireland's Pugwash will be Giddy, a compilation of this outfit's finest material to date including two tracks from the work in progress Eleven Modern Antiquities which in turn is scheduled for 2010 release. Led by vocalist/songwriter Thomas Walsh, Pugwash has featured an ever-changing [...]

he Works Progress Administration is not quite a supergroup (well it, is but...), instead they claim that it's an expandable collective, centred around Glen Phillips of solo and Toad the Wet Sprocket fame, Sean Watkins from Nickel Creek, and Luke Bullett who was a member of Lyle Lovett's large band. The WPA also features many other performers, including Sara Watkins (fiddle), Benmont Tench (piano), Greg Leisz (various), Pete Thomas (drums), and Davey Faragher (bass). The self-titled album also features some of the best album art/liner notes I have ever seen. Here is what frontman Glen Phillips had to say about [...]

Pugwash Giddy Ape House Records [2009] Fire Drill Review: Giddy is a solid compilation of tracks from the Irish band Pugwash, which debut power-pop album released in 1999. Pugwash, aka songwriter Thomas Walsh and friends, has been an instant favorite of Irish and British music critics but has not had much success here. This album was compiled by Andy Partridge (XTC) and Walsh as the 13 tracks here [...]

The Parallax Project is a loose collective of musicians centered around lead vocalist/guitarist Michael Giblin. On his new album I Hate Girls he does a fine job with the opening track "All The Same," full of Revolver-styled rhythm and a workman-like effort in the chorus. Much like Squeeze meets Elvis Costello, "The Day After Tomorrow" is has a compelling lyrical story that leads to a catchy chorus with guitar and organ breaks, "it's all about singing a brand new song" he intones. "It's So Easy" will remind people of Phil Seymour with it's sunny sound and understated beat. [...]

Another one of my favorites from Years of Future Passed is Graham Parker. He had a couple of different backing bands over the years, but there is no mistaking his voice. I have remarked in the past about my college years basically transforming what I thought were my musical tastes. Graham Parker & The Rumour were a British "New Wave" (I get so tired of adhering to the labeling of bands, but if nothing else it gives it a bit of a time stamp I suppose) act that three relatively well known records by 1979's Squeezing Out Sparks. All I [...]
