Well, I've enjoyed the few weeks of autumn Mother Nature and/or global warming have allowed. After an incredibly long and excruciatingly hot summer, the leaves had barely enough time to change colors before falling to the ground in heaps. Now it's time for sweaters and brisk winter winds, and there's nothing like growing a beard to keep your face warm. If facial hair isn't your thing or you're a female, settling for summery Australian folk music by Lady of the Sunshine will act as a fine follicle substitute. It seems like every [...]

With its genre-defying qualities, Vancouver's Language-Arts' sophomore release "Where Were You in the Wild?" is expected to turn ears to a new side to indie rock; celebrating obscurities and word entanglements with poetic poise, paired with an alt-rock foundation yet fleshed out with classical instrumentation. Confused? Don't be- it all comes about very naturally, aided in part by Cudmore's vast reserve of words and ideas, delivered with a "clarion-like voice". "Where Were You in the Wild?" is Language-Arts' full length follow up to 2007's self titled debut as well as their now out of print 2008 [...]

What is it about the blues that draws us together? For the 9,000 or so drenched fans that attended this years Blues and Brews Festival it was the need to let go one more time before they hunkered down for the winter. Light snow dusted the tops of the peaks that surround Telluride Town Park in Telluride, CO, and with monsoon season in full swing, the weather showed its every side. The long rainy periods would be relieved by a tease of warm sun and blue skies only to go back again. Sunday even saw pebbles of hail [...]

Foeweel... Comfortably Hungry Fusion 45... Pete Yorn, Scarlett Johannson , Xavier Rudd Muruch... Sonos: New Radiohead Cover Untitled Records... Alt Pop Filled With Soul When You Awake... A Late Summer Mixtape

A few days before my last post we pulled up stakes and moved. It was only about 120 blocks south of where we lived but it's true what they say: 120 blocks could be 120 thousand miles; you still have to pack. A few days after we moved, my Mom came to visit. Therein lies the reason why there's been so little activity here at F45 for the past few weeks. Been a lot of musical activity, though. The new place warranted a new (and smaller) piano, so my boy is now playing a Charles Walters upright instead [...]

[MP3] Amy Millan - I Will Follow You Into The Dark I'm pretty stoked about Amy Millan's next solo release Masters of the Burial which will feature Feist for enough female vocal power to make any indie man-fan more than weak at the knees . Not only does Millan enjoy contrasting her sweet vocals with bereaved album titles , she also puts her pipes to use covering Death Cab's grimly affectionate "I Will Follow You Into The Dark". The track displays [...]

What started as a random collection of covers ended up turning into a decidedly Beatles themed post. Purely coincidental. I'm sure if you could be bothered hunting around though you'd find a plethora of information out there guaranteed to satisfy any deep-seated need for Beatles covers. Imagine (John Lennon Cover) - Built To Spill Let It Be (Beatles Cover) - Xavier Rudd [...]

Joshua James' spectacular sophomore album Build Me This will be released on September 22nd. The singer-songwriter's debut The Sun is Always Brighter was sleeper hit on my Top Albums of 2008 , and I'm pleasantly surprised that the new disc is even better. The warm tone of Joshua's voice and the lilt of his phrasing continue to remind me of Xavier Rudd (a big compliment), but there's a harder rock edge to these new arrangements. The quiet, almost a capella [...]
In news that should make Brooklyn/NYC enthusiasts cream their skinny jeans, the just-announced 2009 Falls Festival lineup boasts Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Moby, Chairift, Grizzly Bear and more. Throw in some crowd pleasing local heroes (Hilltop Hoods, Temper Trap and Midnight Juggernauts), an obligatory "chill" act (Xavier Rudd or Emiliana Torrini - take your pick), a production team who can't replicate their shit live (Major Laser Soundsystem) and a freak out bro (King Khan & The Shrines) are ladies and gentlemen you have yourself a festival. Peep the full lineup below and check the [...]
day 1 by pelly - day 2 & 3 by eliza (photography by marc evan) All Points West is the best thing to happen in Jersey City, well, ever. With a solid lineup (most notably on Friday) and acts appealing to a range of demographics, Day 1 drew a surprisingly small crowd. I know New Yorkers and Jersey folk aren't the most enthusiastic about festies , but damn, if it keeps up this way, APW will be a short lived social experiment. The event [...]

Last week, I had the chance to chat briefly with Australian folk superstar Xavier Rudd . The multi-instrumentalist known for his politically-charged lyrics and mastery of the didgeridoo, as well as having been given PETA's 2007 "Sexiest Celebrity Vegetarian" award. We had a great talk, touching on his relocation to Canada, his view of US festivals, and what it was like to record an album so close to home. Read on for details... Dark Shades of Blue , Rudd's most recent release (2008, Anti ), was recorded in Australia, near [...]
"I needed to go into the dark rooms inside myself and clean off some of the dusty shelves."
