Jamie Stewart and friends will be releasing Dear God, I Hate Myself, February 23rd on Kill Rock Stars. Stewart is joined by Angela Seo on piano, synth, and drum programming; with production handled by himself and Deerhoof's Greg Saunier. A couple of the tracks were recorded primarily on a Nintendo DS, which will either sound [...]

It's been almost two years since we've heard a proper yelp from Jamie Stewart and his band of avant-humanists. Which isn't to say he hasn't been busy, making a record with Former Ghosts, writing personal haiku's for me and a billion other kids, and even covering Morrissey. And now that we've all been tended to, Xiu Xiu will return to form this February with the release of their new full-length called (ready?), Dear God, I Hate Myself. After the somewhat recent departure of Caralee McElroy, they've enlisted the full-time [...]

Album of the Quarter : A Sunny Day in Glasgow - Ashes Grammar Runners up: Memory Tapes - Seek Magic , Mount Eerie - Wind's Poem I am well aware that this podcast is a good month and a half removed from the end of 2009's third quarter, and that we are balls deep in the year's capping three-month span. But, perhaps the extra reflection has further winnowed the included tracks down from the fickle week to week whims of the blogosphere? Let's just pretend that that's [...]

We're headlong into gift-giving season, so feel free to make your year-end list, as it's no mans land as far as quality releases. That being said, there are a couple albums that provide more than stocking fodder. The Led Zep/Queens of the Stone Age/Foo Fighters supergroup Them Crooked Vultures doesn't disappoint, and Macca's got a live album that aims to please. Elsewhere, it's mostly meh in new releases -- tis the season for reissues. Playlist: New Releases 11.17.09 [...]

Experimental geniuses Xiu Xiu have revealed details of their forthcoming 2010 album release and if it's title is anything to go by, the band don't seem to be very happy. There's a method to the madness, I tell ya. The blog ran a contest a couple of weeks ago, asking our readers what they'd like to see more of. A sort of suggestion box or comment card. A common theme was "shorter reviews." Alright then, I'll try to keep the brevity rocking hard on this one. In a nutshell, Tune Yards (which is officially denoted as tUnE-yArDs, but since typing toggle case is kind of an ass pain, I'll stay with MLA style) is one of the most schizophrenic and beautiful records to grace these ears [...]

Xiu Xiu - Dear God, I Hate Myself Out 2/24 on Kill Rock Stars

you know once i'm onto swedish pop i really can't stop, especially when there're singles aplenty to dust off and share. this time, i have a track from the sweet seranades , something that's been lying around in my collection for almost a year, but which sounds just as good as when i first heard it. "mona lee" introduces the self-pronounced "woodsmen of indiepop" (just look at the promo shot) with a chopping drum beat that clears the way for an intro that could really go anywhere. while i'm tempted to fit in the opening lines of "lisztomania", what [...]

Hailing from Seattle, Perfume Genius has been releasing demos and bare-bones songs via his MySpace page since late 2008. His compositions are spare and often constructed like mantras or religious hymnals, with waves of repetition over somber chords or pianos, as heard on tracks like Gay Angels . Similar in tone to Xiu Xiu (not coincidentally, a "friend" of his on MySpace), some of his songs also remind me of early Moby or even Sebastian Schuller, brief but intricate piano playing coupled with youthful and slightly angst-ridden vocals. I also admire his DIY [...]

Most Likely To: synthesize 1980 with 2009 . The music of 1979-82 has cast a long shadow over the music of 2000-09. Neo-post-punkers have crawled out of the woodwork in numbers almost equal to the originals, with bands that nod to Joy Division, Gang of Four, Echo and the Bunnymen, and Wire grabbing the lion's share of critical and commercial attention. The combos with a (Howard) jones for the likes of the Human League, OMD, and Tubeway Army haven't received anywhere near as much love. Partly this is because the [...]

Philly band, Cold Cave , released their debut album on Matador records this week. Love Comes Close is an album that has emerged from the collaborations of Wesley Eisold (formerly of hardcore bands Give Up the Ghost and Some Girls ), Dominick Fernow (of Prurient ), Caralee McElroy (formerly of Xiu Xiu ), and Max G. Morton (co-head of Heartworm Press ). The band was originally the solo project of Wesley Eisold that began with a few thrift store Casio synthesizers. Cold Cave has grown to four [...]
