One would expect the end of the world to be a fairly chaotic affair. If the the trailer for this month's action flick 2012 is any indication, there's going to be a lot of shit blowing up. Cities will tumble. Mobs will scream and trample. There also be fighter jets, another creative destruction of the White House from disaster/snuff director Roland Emmerich, and (if you don't blink) Oliver Platt. I'm judging from the trailer alone, because it convinced me to totally disregard the actual film based on the erroneous statement that the Mayans were the "oldest civilization." If [...]

Today's the day when all nail technicians in the world should head out of the beauty parlor and peep buy the nearest record shop to buy an album. That album I have in mind is Melisa Young's aka. Kid Sister's long awaited debut "Ultraviolet" released today on Fool's Gold / Downtown Records. Can't think of a better way to show reciprocity actually, cause not ever since the days of the sprinter Florence "Flo Jo" Griffith-Joyner, someone have had that form of impact on women all over to start pay attention to their nails and getting flipped nail designs did. [...]
Gone, Gone, Gone is another number from the pride of Nova Scotia, Joel Plaskett , and his 3-disc magnus opus Three . Released in March of this year, Plaskett's 3rd full-length solo effort captured his 2nd Polaris nomination, however I'm not completely convinced this album should be considered a solo-album proper. For myself, the backing vocals (I use the word "backing" loosely as the vocals are essential to many of the numbers), from Ana Egge and Rose Cousins, are often the most memorable pieces of the songs. I'm not trying to take anything away from Plaskett, [...]

Well this is a bit of a big week for Song, by Toad Records. Apart from the fact that the Loch Lomond/Builders & the Butchers split 123 is now officially available to buy, we also have the Meursault single launch on Saturday, with three of my favourite bands. We're releasing four A-sides on two 73 singles, on clear vinyl: new recordings of William Henry Miller Parts One and Two are going back to back with A Few Kind Words and the Dirt & the Roots from Pissing on Bonfires/Kissing With Tongues. Officially, neither single is being released until the first [...]

Remember, if you enjoy these bike tour diaries from Attica! Attica!'s Aaron Scott, please consider donating to the cause for which his band is riding. World Bicycle Relief provides bicycles to disaster-stricken areas of the world. To learn more, please visit WorldBicycleRelief.org. To make a donation to team Ditch The Van, go here: Ditch The Van Team Donation Page . As I climbed the steep hill, my legs and lungs debated who would scream first. The trees of New England had yet to change color, but the brisk air of autumn was upon us. Blake [...]

This post - drawn mostly from my Twitter, uh, live-tweeting of my first and hopefully only listen to this album - assumes that you, dear reader, know and love the first two Weezer albums and have watched the band's baffling career path since with a mixture of hope and nausea. With that in mind, a track by track review of the latest in Rivers Cuomo's ventures into madness lies after the jump. "(If You're Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To": An astonishingly successful jam. Off to [...]
trappedintime : Phish - Festivalography Pt 4/4 Your time is near, the mission's clear For a Phish fan, this last part brings it full circle. From the disaster that was Coventry and the bad shape Trey was in, to a healthy, rejuvinated and forward looking group throwing what stands to be one of the most exciting live music events of the year. We're leaving LA shortly and heading to Indio. We'll be providing updates all weekend long on The Butter Room 's From [...]

The NBA is ready to launch another Donaghy-free season and we couldn't be happier. TSS is kicking things off with the Western Conference and we'll swing out East in the ensuing preview. All eyes are on Kobe and QB's finest small forward in Ron Artest to repeat for LA. Don't get us started on Lamar and Sasquatch Kardashian. On the other end of the spectrum Blake Griffin is due for some posters and looks to be a shoe in for Rookie of the Year. Greg Oden has another year to prove he's not a modern day Sam Bowie and AI [...]

Another one of my favorites from Years of Future Passed is Graham Parker. He had a couple of different backing bands over the years, but there is no mistaking his voice. I have remarked in the past about my college years basically transforming what I thought were my musical tastes. Graham Parker & The Rumour were a British "New Wave" (I get so tired of adhering to the labeling of bands, but if nothing else it gives it a bit of a time stamp I suppose) act that three relatively well known records by 1979's Squeezing Out Sparks. All I [...]

So I'm no music-writing revolutionary here, and I'm not saying "oh foolish slaves to the digital age, where is the soul in your EmPegFree's? Turn your backs on your informationPods and join me" But I've recently purchased a record player, 24 year old/young and this is my first Long Player Player, proper. Part of the reason for getting one was because although I love CD shopping, I've always envied people sifting through dog eared vinyl's, they seem to be on some treasure hunt never knowing what's gonna emerge from the pile, while this can and has happened to [...]

2009 may go down in music history books as the year of the supergroups. We've had Them Crooked Vultures and Tinted Windows and The Hot Rats and Bad Lieutenant . Recent additions include Broken Bells ; a new collab between Ian Brown and Johnny Marr ; and whatever the Thom Yorke/Flea project decides to call itself. But today, friends, I regret to inform you that the shark has been jumped: Witness [...]

Good evening, ladies and gentleman. I am Untra, a longtime reader of Ilictronix, an avid fan of house music, and a guy whose whole life has been consumed by videogames. As any avid music fan will tell you, guitar hero does an awful job portraying the rock and roll culture due to poorly representing how one would actually play the guitar, especially on the easier settings. Regrettably, this can also be said for DJ Hero in regards to the clubbing scene. DJing is a difficult task that involves manipulating multiple elements of the music while keeping the provided [...]
So just as I did last year , I'm going to take a minute to be a negative nancy and focus on some of the downer moments of our ACL weekend . As always, the positives greatly outweigh the negatives and I still enjoyed my festival experience (no matter how much it rained). You'll notice that most of my list consists of things that no one can really do anything about so that leaves me hopeful that next year will be near perfection. I'm willing to bet that you can guess my #1 & #2 slots, but damnit if that [...]

[Wishing happy 40th birthday to Damon Gough, who's Badly Drawn Boy to most folks, and zooming into the weekend. I have keep this real brief this morning ...] Today: If you don't win the lotto and get into the Thom Yorke "rehearsal" at the Echoplex, there are a couple of other shows that have my heart atwitter: The Postmarks and Brookville at Spaceland, and World Party and Parade of Lights at the El Rey. ... There's also the release [...]

The defending World Series champions have had a relatively easy run to the playoffs this season, but as the playoffs dawn and their championship defense begins, fans can't be blamed for feeling relatively uneasy about the team's chances. The Mets fell apart early, quite literally in the case of many players' ligaments, and other than a late September run of success by Atlanta, none of the rest of the division was up to challenging the Phillies for the NL East crown this year. So the Phillies have managed to cruise to a title despite some really shaky and troubling performances [...]

We have our breakdown of the entire ACL Festival all ready with Friday's preview coming today at noon. We kept it clean and basically put our schedules out there with streaming audio so everyone could give each band a listen and broke it down from hour to hour. Below that you will find all the necessary links to both "official" After-shows as well as the "less than official" After-Parties. But before we get in to all that we wanted to take one last opportunity and invite everyone out to Beauty Bar to help us kick off this weekends festivities in [...]
