Yo La Tengo - "If It's True" One of the tricks Yo La Tengo have mastered over the years is placing their quiet, unassuming personalities in the context of familiar song styles that are typically characterized by more glamorous vocalists. They're not the first people to ever do this, and they're hardly not the only band to deliberately undersell emotional lyrics with a flat vocal affect, but they don't just stop at irony and call it a day. Ira Kaplan and Georgia Hubley have learned to give nuanced performances in their narrow range, and when they sing [...]

Photo by Sarah Murphy Jurado Holy crap is " River of Love" chessy. I mean, it's called River of Love , seriously, by the group United State of Electronica – a band that self identifies as "disco pop." Completely, unabashedly, poppy and over the top – the little snare hit, the snappy guitar riffs, and of course the alternately auto-tune-crooning and soaring-coed-chorus vocals. From the first twenty seconds of this song you know exactly what the next three and a half minutes are going to sound [...]

Next in the Treasure Trove, we have The Clean... What can be said about The Clean ? In 1978, they were the seeds of New Zealand punk. They carved out a big sandbox for everyone to play in, and their influence resonated not only in New Zealand but around the world. The New York Times described The Clean : "This New Zealand band, which has been going off and on since 1978, plays a jangly, damaged kind of guitar pop and was a primary influence on Pavement and Yo La Tengo, and therefore virtually [...]
der start in die mp3 runde dieses tages mit herzerfrischender härte, rottiger kühle: "action in the north atlantic" heißt das werk der band aus halifax (auf noyes records ), tobendes meer, gute und passende vorstellung: a history of - action in the north atlantic a history of - dagger woods klingt wie eine mischung aus 22 pistepirkko und the cure, naja, jedenfalls ein ausblick auf das im januar erscheinende "teen dream", im übrigen wie verrückt das ist: die promofirma [...]

Photo courtesy of Little Dragon's Myspace Page . Is there something in the water in Gothenburg, Sweden? The Knife, The Tough Alliance, Jose Gonzalez, Jens Lekman, and now Little Dragon – those damn Swedes just keep pumping out irresistible pop melodies in a variety of weird incarnations. Little Dragon's track "Runabout" is certainly a slice of quirky pop, but it is uniquely, wonderfully sun-soaked; the soundtrack to a leisurely bike ride on the nicest day of summer, when you're headed to your best friend's house or the beach or a BBQ. [...]
words by Andrew Frisicano , photos by Steven P. Marsh As its length [about an hour] suggests, this was a leisurely "In C," and it began [at Le Poisson Rouge on Sunday] with a prelude of sorts: a rich aural haze surrounding a honking, spirited saxophone line that darted about for five minutes before the steady, pulsing C signaled the start of Mr. Riley's work. The ensemble, which included standard strings and woodwinds, as well as a few guitars, an accordion, a piano and percussion, moved between [...]

By Jon Stone | @jwstone Over the weekend I saw three shows in Champaign-Urbana. Each show was a good show-great even. But wow, were they different experiences. This disparateness is one of the things that makes thinking and writing about music appealing: parsing through the musical experience looking for clues and connections of their quality with our resulting affinity. My goal here is to review each of these shows but also make a larger argument (that includes some theorizing-sorry: academic alert) about why it is we like the music we do and what [...]

Real Estate 's self titled debut album came out today, 11/17 on Woodsist Records. The album is available in both CD and LP formats and can be picked up here . The New Jersey quartet is currently on the road with Pill Wonder and just finished up dates with San Francisco's Girls , which I must add put out an amazing record as well this year. If you missed it, we actually covered their Maxwell's show . You can that out here . More on the band below. "Real Estate [...]

'Hablemos de Romborama' The Bloody Beetroots 'Anarquía y dolor' .

For ramblings on how I came to compile this list go here . And for commentary on previous selections: [ #50-46 ] 45. The Weekend - The Weekend (2000) Probably the most obscure selection on my personal list comes by way of London Ontario's now defunct The Weekend. At the turn of the century I was listening to a lot of embarrassing music and, as expected, when I took the time to revisit some of those [...]
Honestly, it's a little too easy to slam the band Real Estate and their self-titled debut album that's out this week. They've got a large target on their backs, and anybody with a proper weapon can take their shot. Calling their music "uninspired" or "taking advantage of what's hot right now" is easy enough, and I'm sure some reviewers will take that stance. I mean, Real Estate are signed to Woodsist Records, known for earlier this year providing us with great records from bands like Woods and Wavves. I should note that those two albums were lo-fi, or as some [...]

Photo by Punk Photo Sleigh Bells is the loud, creative forced brought to life by Derek Miller and Alexis Krauss. Derek played in a hardcore band, and Alexis well, she was a, uh... school teacher who played in a pop group in her teenage years. With a winning combination like that, you're bound to to make some noise . Sleigh Bells are, by most accounts, a new band with a fresh take on pop music, and their EP really hits it out of the park. They demanded everyone's [...]
