Welcome to my weekly roundup of inexpensive indie(ish) musical happenings in downtown Toronto, all for $10 or less. If I'm missing something you think I should list, or you have any comments, let me know. I star (*) shows that most interest me. Like this list? The problem with a list like this is the "shoulds". You know, the albums you feel like everyone else will pick, so you "should," too? Well, this time I decided not to deal with those. My list is based on the number of times I listened to these albums since they came out, whether I love them so much I already know every word to every song, how much it moved me, etc. This is a personal list. It isn't intended to be complete or controversial. That said, I know I'll get crap for [...]
From: New Jersey, US Sounds like: Saves The Day, Taking Back Sunday, Far Website: www.MySpace.com/LastDaysOfEmpi re Thrash Hits verdict: There seems to be an awful lot going on in New Jersey right now - not only did we stumble across the hardcore rock'n'roll of Chambers , but now we can also add the post-hardcore soundscapes of Last Days of Empire to our 2009 discovery-list. We pinned down LDoE vocalist/guitarist, Michael Depho, to fill us in. -- How did you [...]

Drums Play Spaceland Monday Night (and It's Free) Ray Davies put on a fantastic show on Saturday night at the Orpheum. If you get a chance to see him on this tour do not hesitate. More on that later. Another great week this week. If you're into buzz bands you might want to check out Drums tonight, The Big Pink on Wednesday, Tape Deck Mountain on Thursday, Neon Indian on Friday and The XX on Saturday. Some of those will be good, but I'm recommending a variety of [...]
Last week, I had the opportunity to chat -- and, by chat, I mean "chat via the Internet" -- with a handful of independent record labels' owners and managers. I wanted to discuss the role of the label in a time when fewer people seem to know or care what labels their favorite musicians or bands are on. Furthermore, and perhaps this has always been true, we may not even know what exactly a label does . At the beginning of this decade, record labels were still a way of indexing artists; of positioning them [...]

Three weeks ago I posted a list of my 50 favorite albums of the past decade. You can catch up with that here , here , here , here , and here , if you'd like. While drafting the list I found that I rediscovered plenty of albums that were and are still worthy of more attention, even though they ultimately weren't included on the finished product. It was extremely difficult to cut many of them, especially those made by lesser-known artists. So starting last week, continuing today, and for the next 2 Mondays I'll [...]

I wasn't gonna do this, 'cause I know I'll catch all kinds of shit and lose mad respect just by putting my opinion out here, but here I go anyway. Just to get this out of the way, I have nothing but love for Joe Budden. But he wasn't one of the 10 most important rappers of the decade. With my list, I'm trying to pick the 10 people who I think did the best to move rap forward during this decade. As the 2000s started, many of us thought that rap had seen its [...]

I recently had the pleasure to speak with two of my favourite rappers, Masta Ace and Edo G., about their upcoming collaboration album, A&E. Ace and Edo spoke about hip-hop's generation gap, how they've changed over the years and their opinions on Blueprint 3 . It took a bit for Ace to join the conversation, so the first few questions are me talking to Edo. ML: What's the difference between working in a group dynamic and working as a solo artist? EG: We've done the group thing before and I'm comfortable [...]

(via muchmusic ) I was really kind of torn whether or not to write anything about going to see Jay-Z (or, the G.O.A.T.) at the Air Canada Centre on Halloween. If you wanted a recap of the show you'd be best off to check out the Toronto Star or some other legitimate journalistic outfit, and, frankly, I'm not sure if the "indie" (mostly) music blog readership was interested in hearing about the Jigga Man's delivery of "Big Pimpin'" or how the light hit his $50,000 gold necklace. That said, I've never been one [...]

Some tunes that came in the inbox today or a few days ago or we saw on another blog and we like. Enjoy and have a great weekend :-). 'A Funny Thing' is a genuinely brilliant track from Pengiun Prison . It's got that whole 'he's from NYC cool vibe' thing going on, but at it's heart is a song that is pure catchy pop that simply makes you feel quite good. If he continues making music as utterly brilliant as this surely superstardom awaits. It's out November 23rd on Neon Gold with [...]

For years, whenever I thought of Newfoundland, I only thought of Jockey Club beer, Iceberg tracking web sites and Ches' Fish & Chips, but lately more and more talented acts have been coming across our desk. Most people know Polaris Short-listers Hey Rosetta! , but for me Jon Janes - aka The Mountain & The Trees - is the act I'm keeping my eye on. You know what? I'm not the only one. Jon is coming to Halifax on Nov. 14th to open for the legendary Billy f&cking Bragg ! It's [...]

You see that button over on the right? It's hooked up to our bank account in the Cayman's that we use to pay for our mountains of coke. But in all seriousness, we've been running this site for about 8 years, and for the most part we've been doing it for nada but the chance to talk about music we like. In the last year we added some ads to the site but we have a few music projects we want to start that will need a bit more cash than the herohill account has... so we [...]

Come one come all to the magnificent and frightening Voodoo Experience 2009 Halloween spooktacular held deep in the swampy bayous of New Orleans at City Park! From outrageous costumes to glowing praying mantises, this year's Halloween celebration drew in an outrageous number of people to catch some of this year's hottest acts. Fans braved the freezing rain, which hailed all throughout the first day, and even withstood the muddy after effects on Saturday and Sunday. And all but one small setback (K'NANN canceled his performance last minute on Saturday) made this an exciting and fun filled weekend [...]

Growth & Patience. These are the two themes that DJ Trackstar selected to title his Royce Da 5'9" compilation . Appropriate choices as well, as these are two themes that an MC in Royce's shoes must have to survive in this industry. The man has been through his fair share of industry politics: highly publicized drama, a jail bid, and on top of all that, the struggle to maintain relevancy in the most fickle of environments. 11 years active without a certified breakout album might kill most careers, but as I sit down with Royce to [...]

I went to a Ghostface Killah show a couple weeks ago that was pretty damn dope. I got there early before everyone, because you know I stay "V.I.P" with it. Ghost showed up with Cappadonna to do a sound check and the whole shit was kind of surreal. I never seen these niggaz in real life. He started his sound check with "Apollo Kids" then ran through a bunch of joints. I put my camera up to catch some of it, but then he turned to one of his goons and told dude, to tell me not to snap any [...]

I've been meaning to knock this one out for a while now and since I have an hour before The World Series I thought I'd toss this one back out to the masses for fun. Canada has long been a wellspring for catchy rock nobody seems to ever get to hear. I remember Kim Mitchell back in the 80's (Patio Lanterns & Might As Well Go For a Soda might ring some long lost bells) for example. The Pursuit of Happiness (TPOH) was one such band for me. Many of you will probably remember their quasi novelty track "I'm An [...]

(Editor's Note: I'm all over the map today. I feel like there's been a kind of fallow period for me; work and school have been a bit more intense lately, so I've been listening to old music that I know I love instead of plumbing the depths for new music to wrap my brain around. It's been about aurally cloaking myself with comfort these last couple of weeks; kind of listening to the musical equivalent of homemade macaroni and cheese. This week, however, I got blasted with all sorts of good stuff: new tunes from bands I love, news on [...]

It's no secret that we're big Brother Ali fans around these parts. I happen to think that he is one of the most impressive voices in the rap game, and his story is exceptionally interesting. Recently we had a chance to catch up with Ali for an interview, check it out! The Stu Reid Experiment: You're on tour right now, aren't you? Brother Ali: Yeah. Just rollin' into LA. About half way through a ten week [...]
Here's some very out there shit for you... I don't think I've ever had a harder time trying to figure out the tag for a post than I have with this Dorian Concept record here. It's that fuckin' out there. So naturally I settled on IDM, because I am lazy and will use meaningless genre terms despite my rant yesterday. I'm a bundle of contradictions wrapped inside a paradox and shoved up a ferret's ass. Yes, this record is as weird as that last sentence. [...]
by tim howard This is an open letter to anybody who has ever claimed they're 'too old for this'. Once upon a time, youth was seen as the basic tenet for rock & roll. Its listeners were young rebels, gleeful in the freedoms unfurled by the 50s and expanded on in the 60s. The performers, too, were young and, so we were told, carefree; remember that when the breakup of his band was announced in 1970, George Harrison had only [...]
