Indie-electro trio Union of Knives this week revealed that they had split up, and with the announcement came the now obligatory goodbye statement. Sometimes a band's last words are witty, more often they're as bitter as a lemon marinated in vinegar. We've compiled a dozen of the best break-up speeches by Scottish groups, starting with the most recent. Will the last to leave please switch off the lights? UNION OF KNIVES (January 2010) Craig Grant (singer): [...]
While some of the choices may come as a surprise to those who regularly follow AtomicNed.com, the variety of favorites shouldn't be shocking. While I certainly have been much more of a trendfollower than a trendsetter over the course of my music listening history, it comes down to liking what I like and not always liking what the masses of respected music writers/bloggers like. I mean, how many other writers do you think have both Slayer and Taylor Swift on their year-end favorites list? 1. Danger Danger [...]
JOSE VANDERS London, England The Bristol University student is a quite remarkable talent and it's only a matter of time before her word-of-mouth popularity outgrows the cult following she currently enjoys. Her instrument of choice is usually the piano and if you hunt down her three EPs, you'll soon be swooning to some stunning pop songs. Jose is second from the right, in case you were wondering. Power. Drama. Tension. Beauty. These are words that come to mind when you hear Cellarscape's panoramic, cinematic soundscape of an album, Animation, Suspension . Just check out our review and you'll see where we were coming from. But it wasn't until we had a chance to have the one-man band that is Cellarscape, Paul Terry, come join us on the Ripple red interview couch, that it all made sense. Just check out his "holy trinity" of favorite songwriters and you'll get a feeling [...]

The beautiful music of The Unwinding Hours will almost certainly get those who know their history feeling a bit nostalgic for Aereogramme. It will be intriguing to see what kind of profile Chemikal Underground's latest signing will attract outside of Scotland since Aerogramme, who released the last of their four albums in early 2007, enjoyed a cult following during a nine-year career that existed almost entirely outside the digital age as we know it. Their glory days in the late 90s/early 00s remind me of a time when, if I fell in love with [...]
Do you remember when you were a really young child and it mattered so much to always be making something? Well, you might be relieved to discover that some people don't grow out of such invention and imagination. While drones like you walk the eternal treadmill of work and routine, there are some who are not just living the dream, they're actually living while you, pal, are just alive. Kyle Wood has barely entered his 20s yet the Whitburn lad has produced three collections of LOVERS TURN [...]

New band from ex-Aereogramme members
Good God, how I loved the Scottish band Aereogramme and I feel very, very fortunate to have had the opportunity to see them once back in 2003. They never made it through Ohio on their farewell tour in 2007 and while bands like The Twilight Sad have helped fill the void for me, nothing will top Aereogramme in their prime. The good great news is that Aereogramme's Craig B (vocals/guitar) and Iain Cook (guitar/programming) seem to be in the infancy of a new project - The Unwinding [...]

Run to the Hills
Strictly speaking, this is nothing to do with music but, as with swine flu not so long ago, I can generally twist most things around to the subject with some convoluted logic and a few song titles. Onward. So my wonderful lady and I are running the NYC half marathon on Sunday August 15th, which comprises 13.1 miles around the beautiful surroundings of Central Park and then out into the urban insanity that is lower Manhattan (at which point, I [...]
