tor / sufjan stevens - 'illinoize' remix-collection from montreal-based producer tor . combines samples from indie-darling sufjan stevens ' illinoise, a sun came, seven swans, and songs for christmas albums with sharp and diverse rhymes from mc's ranging from brother ali to outkast. though essentially mashups tor manages to create a collection of tracks that sound remarkably natural, seemlessly combining sufjan's orchestral piano, horns and acoustic guitar with verse from some of the most respected artists in the business. Sad news indeed. Definitive Jux , the premiere indie-rap record label of the noughts, is going "on hiatus," the standard euphemism for "shutting down." If you are a person of taste and distinction, you've got a couple of records from this label in your collection. In my opinion, El-P is the white Dr. Dre: a triple-genius producer (and a B-plus rapper) and incredible tastemaker who defines the boundaries of his corner of the music scene. It's a bit of an exaggeration to say that everything good in underground hip-hop over the last ten years has gone through [...]

If you would've asked me what music I listened to back in the early 2000's, I probably would have listed a bunch of artists, but I could have just as easily said "Anything on Def Jux". Aesop Rock, El-P, and Cannibal Ox forever changed my perspective of music. I even had a Def Jux hat. Back in those days I was just scraping the surface of underground hip-hop after an intense love affair with mainstream rap. For me, interest in the underground scene started with Anticon, which was mostly abstract, nerdy underground hip-hop. Besides my introduction to Slug [...]

Yesterday, Shabooty reported that seminal indie hip-hop label Definitive Jux would be closing its doors. While the blog cited "many of their sources," there'd been no official word from label head El-P pertaining to the matter. Today, the site has posted a statement from El-P regarding the label's future: "This year, a decade after starting DEF JUX and after overseeing the releases of some incredible albums including the forthcoming release of my dear late and great friend Camu Tao's brilliant "KING OF HEARTS" LP, I'm stepping away from my duties as [...]
Rumors circulated heavily earlier this week that Definitive Jux would cease operations, and founding producer/emcee El-P confirmed the independent hip-hop stalwart is folding-at least as a traditional record label. Since its formation in 2000, the label released albums from Aesop Rock, RJD2, Del , Dizzee Rascal and more. "We are not closing, but we are changing," wrote El-P in a statement on the Def Jux website. The producer will resign from his duties as artistic director to focus on a solo career. The label currently plans to release [...]
In news that is probably unexpected but no less sad for the hip-hop and pop music world, El-P has released an official statement on the rumors of the demise of Definitive Jux records. El-P, the label's founder, main producer, and spiritual leader, has officially stepped down from running the label, which for most of the 2000s was the premiere source of independent hip-hop, with a bevy of classic releases from artists including Cannibal Ox to Mr. Lif, RJD2, and Aesop Rock. From Def Jux's website: In 2000 [...]

After a decade of pushing boundaries in hip-hop with releases by Cannibal Ox, Aesop Rock, Mr. Lif, Mike Ladd, RJD2, and many more, label-head El-P has decided to put the Jux on pause. Stressing that this is not an end, but rather a hiatus for the label, El-P is looking to shift his focus back to doing what he loves most, being an artist. That means more time spent in the lab producing, writing, and when the time comes, hitting the road to support his work. From a personal standpoint, Def [...]

From the Bonnaroo folks: Superfly Productions and AC Entertainment are excited to announce that a unique unveiling of the 2010 Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival lineup will take place next Tuesday February 9th. This will unfold throughout the entire day creating a virtual event for Bonnaroo fans, who will be able to view and discuss the confirmed lineup on Bonnaroo.com as it is revealed. For Bonnaroo, we sort of figure indie-rappers are akin to the tight end draft pick in fantasy football, something that can wait until late in the game but [...]

Say it ain't so. But unfortunately, it might be. NYC-based indie hip-hop label Def Jux is rumored to be closing its doors, leaving many backpackers reaching for their inhalers in an attempt to catch their breath from the news. The label, run by El-P (pictured) is was home to artists like Aesop Rock, Del The Funky Homosapien and even MURS and RJD2, has apparently felt the pinch of the now penny pinching industry and the white towel has been thrown. According to ShaBooty [...]

by BBG Is Def Jux waving goodbye? ( more by Ryan Muir ) Is one of the great and pioneering labels in hip hop hanging up their shell toes? According to numerous tweets by artists and reports around the interwebs, Def Jux Records may be folding. The story originated with Shabooty , who aggregated the info and asked honcho El-P for comment. An official statement is on the way. Over the years [...]

The dynamic duo of rapper Murs and producer 9th Wonder , known for making reliably good music together, have teamed up for their fourth collaborative studio album, reports Prefix . Murs announced the album on his Twitter , with the very unambiguous words, " Can I say March 30, 2010 new Murs and 9th Wonder album coming out?" Yes, you can!
