Touring isn't what it used to be. I told you that they weren't letting anyone backstage @ the BP3 show and J. Cole spoke on how there weren't any groupies gettin' their back out as far as he could see. Bummer. I think we all grow up having wet dreams where floozy after floozy in countless city comes through...well I ain't tellin' you my dreams. We all have a romanticized perception of what the life of an entertainer is supposed to be [...]

J. Tillman took the stage at the Middle East Upstairs for a late show on Sunday night. But then again, it was only 8pm in Seattle, the west-coast town that this drummer from Fleet Foxes calls home. The performance was a family affair, with J. Tillman's brother Zach opening as a solo act called Pearly Gates Music . Zach Tillman offered us a stripped-down version of his already sparse style: leaving behind all unnecessary instruments, he came to us as one man and a guitar crooning blues and covering Pavement's "Shoot [...]

When I was in high school, I discovered Anne Rice's vampire novels and-pardon the pun-was bitten. I can hardly remember all the details of the novels now, but I know how hard I fell for the romanticized midnight lives of the tortured, and torturing soulless vampires Louis and Lestat (Claudia not so much). In my 16 year old mind, becoming a vampire was the ultimate form of rebellion, and I dare say that if the opportunity had ever presented itself to me, I might not have been able to refuse. a few years later, when the movie version was finally [...]
Story by Adam Daniels Photography by Dorothy Hong "Do you need a drink?"
"Yes, I need four double whiskeys and four PBRs." It was Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson's record release show at Williamsburg's Union Pool, and while he was among a roomful of friends, he was not at ease. Robinson's former fiancé obliged the request, assuming it was on behalf of the entire band. This was not the case. Robinson wasn't a household name in indie rock at the time. But he had a lot of the pieces in place [...]

Filthy 'Ducks' Those Filthy Dukes (or Filthy Ducks as Raphael likes to pronounce them) have turned out a mix of the most important tracks of the last six years at Kill Em All. They're partying at Fabric in London on the 11th of December with a hot hot line-up including The Chemical Brothers , Hercules & Love Affair , Riton and The Juan Maclean amongst others as well as the Dukes themselves - not to even mention We Have Band and [...]

A London based band that doesn't try to sound like the Klaxons or The Libertines is welcome enough but big smoke dwelling The High Wire are a breath of fresh air. Their echoy, layered music is as unique as it is sentimental. Whilst the band ooze with 80s shoegaze influences ' Leave Me In Love ' is more of a twee affair, driven by seasidey synth whilst male-female vocals serve the listener a hefty portion of sentimentality. This tune sits in [...]
Interpol have revealed that their new album will be released in early 2010 - and is a bit of a retro affair. The record will be the follow-up to 2007's 'Our Love To Admire' and the group's fourth studio album, and the band's drummer Sam Fogarino has revealed how the sound of the LP is a return to that of their 2002 debut album 'Turn On The Bright Lights'. "The new record falls back towards the first," he told Paste Magazine . He added: "In trying to move forward, there was an unspoken realisation that you can't [...]

So, last night I went to see the Ladyboys Of Bangkok show in Custom House Square, Belfast (free ticket courtesy of Kim Barclay, nice!), and it was actually brilliant. It's hard to believe that they are all men, but short of going up and doing a personal inspection, I'll have to take their word for it. It was a cabaret style affair, mainly consisting of miming to popular songs, with the odd bit of acrobatic performance and audience participation thrown in. A damn good nights fun, it has to be said. If you get the chance to see their show, [...]

Through the technological wonder and infinite time-sink that is Facebook, I've had the fun of reconnecting with gobs of old friends from college, high school, heck, even grade school; and part of that fun is seeing how many of my friends still maintain their youthful passion for music, no matter what kind. Jeff is off and running to see King Khan in the City, Diana is posting early morning videos of Alan Parsons, Dave has a Kiwi-American hybrid playlist. It's all good. More recently, I'd learned that an old middle-school friend and I developed into musical soul [...]
It was a family affair Wednesday when J Tillman , his brother Zach and a trio of equally ripe musicians held court in the teeny tiny chapel at First Unitarian Church. Zach warmed the small but packed room with his brand of crisp conversational songwriting. A folkie who isn't afraid of dabbling in the some Morricone like soundscapes. Playing his guitar solo Zach's short set help both tender and slightly more raucous moments. It set a very relaxed vibe perfect for the lush set J had on deck. [...]

Regardless of where one stands on the issue of androgynes, it is important to understand that Grace Jones is one of the best androgynous [...]

Ever since Fame Monster started leaking, my inbox has been inundated with all kinds of oddly shaped, weird smelling Lady Gaga remixes. I don't want anyone to OD, so I'll just post a couple that stand out. Here's the first 2, both with their scopes locked on "Bad Romance". JD McDonald - "Boogaloo Santa Claus" Strut presents: In The Christmas Groove If you're anything like we are, the constant barrage of adult contemporary schlock that passes for holiday music can get a little much around this time of year. It's supposed to be party music after all, no? With celebration in mind, Strut has compiled at collection of holiday themed jams that will be sure to keep your spirits bright this season. JD McDonald's "Boogaloo Santa Claus" is raw funk of the [...]

Everyone's favorite movie about the 80's has to be The Wedding Singer. It is kind of unfair to include this in great 80's soundtracks because it could choose from any and all 80's songs but it is as far as I am concerned a greatest hits collection of awesome 80's hits. The movie was made in 1998 and basically sparked a new love affair with the previous decade. It pretty much was the inspiration for VH1's I love the 80's series and also turned the Wedding Singer into a successful broadway show. Kind of weird how that happened. But the [...]
It's an intimate lineup tonight at The Hydrant in Denton for Spune's folk-themed, Thanksgiving-inspired affair. (And, oh yeah, a reminder: Thanksgiving is a week from today.) Indeed, this lineup ... Continue reading "Giveaway: Two Pairs of Tickets To Tonight's Spune Thanksgiving Celebration" >
