There's not much I love more than stumbling upon a new band that's oozing with talent and just on the cusp of making it big, and that's exactly what you have with Northern Ireland's Two Door Cinema Club . The band follows in the current trend of mixing indie rock with electronica, but they do it with such expertise and vitality, that any cries of unoriginality are besides the point. Their debut album, Tour History , is a genuinely exhilarating listen from start to finish. It's no accident that the crisp, exuberant production on [...]
Monday, February 1, 2010 Today's Quick Mention: Tonight I'm joining up with some people from work and heading down to the Austin Chronicle/Grounded In Music's first ever Mind Over Music trivia competition. It'll probably be pretty difficult, but my guess is that it will also be equally fun. Anyone else out there have a team? Sorry for no podcast this weekend. As I tweeted, my PC was having a variety of issues (not even sure if it's fixed now) and I just couldn't get it done. [...]

Story by Michael McGregor Photography by John Francis Peters It's mid-December in Northern New Jersey and the members of Real Estate, known for songs like "Beach Comber" and "Let's Rock the Beach," are bundled in scarves, flannel and woolens. The pool is long since covered. Smoking cigarettes on the back patio, drummer Etienne Duguay and guitarist Matt Mondanile are taking bets on whether frontman Martin Courtney, on the phone meandering through his backyard, can walk across the covered, unfilled pool without falling in. Walking backwards, Courtney's foot hits the [...]

Handsome pop crooner Alex Gardner is stirring up a storm overseas. After opening for acts like MIKA, The Script, Paolo Nutini and Paloma Faith on their recent tours, the Edinburgh-based singer is gearing up to strike out on his own. He teamed up with the melody makers of Xenomania to work on his debut record that will be released on A&M later this year. The result of their teaming is a distinct brand of "white soul" that is timeless - combining Alex's hearfelt, soulful delivery with the chart-savvy chops of Brian Higgins and the rest [...]
Since the BBC Sound of 2010 longlist was announced I have been meaning to find out more (ok let's face facts, by 'more' I mean 'something') about the fifteen artists. Here they are: Daisy Dares You Delphic Devlin Ellie Goulding Everything, Everything Giggs Gold Panda Hurts Joy Orbison Marina & The Diamonds Owl City Rox Stornoway The Drums Two Door Cinema Club [...]

I've lived in Portland for about 30 years now. In that time I have come to believe that the average Portland resident is just a bit different than most other people in the world. There's a certain something that diverts their brain waves slightly off the course most would consider normal. This is, for the most part, a good thing. At other times, the differences backfire, with curious, befuddled results. I'm referring to last week's Northwest run of concerts by the Cascadia Yulegrass Project, in particular, their Portland [...]

When I first saw the trailer for The Vicious Kind , I really didn't know what to expect. I felt like it was going to be a story about relationships with a dark comedy spin. The film reads through synopsis as direct rip off of " Dan In Real Life" but after watching the movie, if anyone make that connection has missed the point of the film entirely. Take a read for yourself : The relationship between two brothers, a father trying to connect with his sons and the young woman who gets between the [...]

As their name suggests Trail are beating their own path to musical notoriety and acclaim. Albums : 1. National Skyline : Bliss & Death (Adventure Broadcasting) Jeff Garber modernizes the shoegaze-pop blueprint by making a record that focuses just as much on hooks, big rhythms and sharp vocals as it does epic swells of guitar. It's the kind of record I had always wished an L.A. artist would make for years. It's welcoming and clean enough for radio but still feels mysterious and cloudy, like you [...]

Yep, it's a day late. Probably two if you live in a different time zone. It's part three of my top 40 albums of 2009. If we look back at the month of May, it seems like the majority of my favourites were released all at the same time, including albums from the Manics, IAMX, Morton Valence, Jarvis Cocker, Archivist, and The Rest. We also had new records that have already graced this list, including The Horrors' Primary Colours and Phoenix's Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix . The month was rounded out with albums by Maximo Park, Peaches, Esser, [...]
One of our favorite DJ nights, Rick and Brandon's We Fought The Big One returns this evening AND with a special live event tomorrow night. Some details from Rick's press release: The stew has been brewing for awhile now, but this weekend makes it official: "We Fought the Big One" is expanding beyond the monthly confines of the Marx Cafe to include special live shows that will take place at DC-area venues! Needless to say, we couldn't be more excited. To tie in with this Friday's dj night at the Marx, Brandon and I [...]

I dithered about reviewing Chris Bell's I Am The Cosmos for months, in part because I was struggling to decide exactly what I wanted to say about it, in part because of its ambiguous status: formerly considered a "lost album" but nowadays a recognised classic (for the measure of its current standing, read the heartfelt reviews on Amazon.com ), whilst actually not an album as conceived, but a compilation of tracks laid down over the six years before his death in 1978 and only issued in collected form fourteen years later to cash in on the renewed interest in [...]
Opening with striking staccato vocal snippets before being sent afloat with screaming guitar and a thick bottom-end chug, then brought down to Earth with a buzzing bassline and punchy electric fretwork, the amazing first minute of "I Can Talk", the newest single from Irish three-piece Two Door Cinema Club , carries this exciting air of a future music sensation being born in real-time. Of course, the Kitsune -backed band's instantaneous musical appeal will be nothing new to those who've been obsessively following TDCC's quiet rise up to buzzworthiness over the past year via live gigs, [...]
