Don't know exactly why I didn't post this in the first place...let's see if the links work! The kids are on spring break; we're spending lots of time at the library and the book stores, hanging out, avoiding the cold rain of...hmm...April. A couple of big projects need to be finished soon, too, so there's not a lot of time to write epic blog posts. So we're mellowing out in a folkie kind of way. Harry Chapin - Corey's Coming [...]

Will at WDUB interviewed Adam Wills, bass player for Bear in Heaven for their station blog, www.911-blog.com "911-Blog was fortunate enough to score an email interview with Adam Wills of Bear In Heaven, recent recipient of Pitchfork's "Best New Music" honor for their new album, Beast Rest Forth Mouth. If you haven't gotten around to listening to Bear In Heaven yet, their sound treads a unique path between electronica, prog, and southern rock. Look for downloads of their tracks "Wholehearted Mess" and "Lovesick Teenagers" (my new favorite song) after the interview. [...]

It feels like State has been waiting forever for Ebony Bones! to release her debut album. The singer, who's real name is Ebony Thomas, ditched an established acting career in 2005 (she was a cast member in the British TV drama Family Affairs for seven years) and turned to music, starting off using beer bottles, pots and pans as percussion instruments whilst recording in her bedroom. Her early singles, 'We Know All About You' and 'Don't Fart on My Heart', both drew critical praise, being championed by the likes of Jo Wiley and Zane Lowe, and the attention [...]

I've never met an album that didn't change for me somehow. Now, they can go up and down the scale in either a positive or negative direction, but there isn't one that escapes a reframing of sorts somewhere along the line. For some albums, time is the perfect vindicator. The album is revealed as a master stroke and the audiences' initial conceptions are what become tarnished. Other times, what was once golden falls into disrepair, looking like an old sack of potatoes, stripped of its luster and banished to the bin. This state of flux is part of what makes [...]

I love driving on the open road. Convertible top down. Wind blowing through my hair . . .er . . . scalp. Whatever. Wind blowing against me, chilling my skin, making me feel alive. With that in mind, I think you can agree that the antithesis of the joyful, freedom abandon of the open road, is being stuck in traffic. And I mean, bumper-to-bumper, flipping-off-the-jerk-who-just -cut-me-off, traffic. So with that thought, today in the Ripple player, I'm only spinning discs that can make anytime on the road a little more joyful and [...]

Of course, the choice was my own. But what if I failed? The very first thing I did in my first year in university was head downtown with my friends to buy concert tickets. I had a two-speed Toyota Corolla that made a delightful humming sound when barrelling down the Don Valley Parkway like a sewing machine trying to achieve escape velocity. But it made me a popular guy among the people in residence, seeing as we were so far from the action at our remote commuter campus. We had all been to the student loan office earlier [...]
It's hard for me to believe that 2010 marks 20 years since The Black Crowes released Shake Your Money Maker, an album that landed The Crowes a spot as one of the preeminent jam bands on the scene. Just a few months ago, the group released Before the Frost...Until the Freeze and to support their effort the band is currently on the "Stuck Inside Utopia" Tour, which by my calculations is their 17th tour since 1990. On November 7th, 2009 The Riverside [...]

Sleigh Bells photographed 10.30.09 by anthoNYC Derek Miller and Alexis Krauss have managed to cause quite a stir on the internet, having going from amateurly recorded obscurity to booking sought after gigs and rolling with the likes of M.I.A. and Spike Jonze. Sleigh Bells : What is the method to their mayhem? Who are they? What kind of music is this? These were all questions that plagued us and we decided to get to the bottom of this two weeks ago, the day before Halloween. We met up with the duo at [...]

Originally, the purpose for The Midnight Rambles at Levon Helm's Woodstock home-recording studio - otherwise referred to as The Barn - was to serve as a way for the legendary drummer of The Band to recoup money from his mounting medical bills after battling and overcoming throat cancer. Helm's iconic and unmistakable voice was down to barely a raspy whisper after radiation treatments which forced him into resting his vocal chords. While he had to rely on his capable band to provide the vocals, Helm was able to return to [...]

Artist: Amy Millan ------ Bahamas ------ Canary Date: November 8, 2009 Location: DC9, Washington DC HEY Y'ALL. I've tried to write this entry about 397 times now and, every time, I've fallen asleep. Considering it's now multiple days overdue, giving it another go seems like a good--and, because it's the middle of the night, possibly productive--idea. In celebration of the music (and because I feel like it), the entry will have a heavy-handed country tint that may or may not simply mean gratuitous overuse of the word "y'all." [...]
