In 1979, the Peoples' Republic of China publicly reported that several thousand of its children aged 8-14 were capable of telepathy, clairvoyance, X-ray vision, or psychokinesis. Having already heard about this program, the Central Intelligence Agency, National Security Agency, Defense Intelligence Agency, Lawrence Livermore Laboratories, and the US Army were simultaneously pouring billions of dollars into their own similar research. The Army program was headquartered at Fort Meade, Maryland, and was part of the Intelligence and Security Command (INSCOM). Leaders included Generals Edmund Thompson and Albert Stubblebine, and Colonel John Alexander. The First Earth Battalion was [...]

it was four years ago today. we were living in reno watching our beloved new orleans get slammed by a cat 4 hurricane called 'katrina'. the next morning, after it blew by, there was a profound feeling of relief... it looked as though we had missed the bullet. the t.v. was showing various parts of town, and while there was a lot of wind damage, it wasn't as bad as what we were seeing from mississippi. ...and then it came, but it didn't come in a huge wave through the city, it crept up like a big black [...]
Science vs. Religion is a debate that has raged for centuries, not least on our own shores. It's taken a back seat over the past decade or so as we've ridden the wave of liberalism that often accompanies economic progress, but it's reared its head once again in recent months with Minister Dermot Ahern's bizarre decision to re-introduce blasphemy laws to the statute book in spite of the fact that nobody had actually asked him to. It's always a little awkward to watch an organism slowly cannibalise itself, but Fianna Fáil's latest catastrophe has at least [...]

Listening to Soundgarden's final album today got me thinking about baseball.* I grew up with an All-American boy's passion for the American game. The players whose faces festooned my collection of baseball cards were like idols to me. Steve Garvey, Pete Rose, Willie Stargell, the Niekros - Phil and Joe - Ron Guidry, Don Sutton, George Brett, Dale Murphy - they were demigods battling with bat and pitched ball in the pantheon of Major League Baseball. I loved everything about the game - the slow pace and the Byzantine rules and scorekeeping. I loved [...]

Ingram Barss When it comes to rock music, there are few things that can be said to be asking to fail more than the double album and the concept album. To the former, most artists have trouble coming up with enough quality material to pad out a conventional 10-song set and to the latter... well, I don't think there's any explanation needed there. And let's not even get started on the double- concept album. So the fact that Joel Plaskett's latest is a triple- album with a running theme should be a [...]

May?!? Really? What happened to March and April? *blinks* This year just seems to be flying by, with the "Date Added" timestamps in my iTunes library as my only proof that the past few months have really happened. Music is funny like that with me. When I hear a song, I can remember what I was doing when I bought the album/track, roughly when I bought it and so forth. I've also found that I'm far more productive, and capable of learning stuff when I've got music playing. I suppose that comes from growing up in a musical house. [...]

NEW BELLE & SEBASTIAN PROJECT It's called God Help The Girl and it's the newest project from the seemingly out-of-hiatus Stuart Murdoch, the brains behind twee-pop stalwarts Belle & Sebastian . Here's the story according to the project's Myspace: "God Help The Girl' is a story set to music, which Stuart Murdoch has been working on intermittently for the last five years, its origin in some songs that were written while Belle and [...]

The Life and Times- Let It Eat (MP3) Tragic Boogie is massive. Its sound is so immense that it's difficult to imagine experiencing it at The Life and Times ' familiar hometown haunts The Brick or The Record Bar. The post-punk arena rock of Tragic Boogie would be a far better fit for The Sprint Center. Barring that, it's headphone music of the first order. The band's new album combines the arty ambition of Thrice with [...]

( BACK TO PART ONE ) Nazarín (1959, 94 min) (rent/ buy ) I almost feel like I know less about this movie having seen it. It came without subtitles, that doesn't help. Nazarín is a serious work (at least its actors - even, sigh, the midget - are serious-mannered), it might be a contemplation on how unrewarding selflessness can be, a demonstration of how no good deed goes unpunished, a Christ parable, maybe. The title character is a handsome, kind [...]

John Updike is one of my literary heroes, and he will be greatly missed. Rest in peace, John. W. Earl Snyder Requiem , by John Updike, from The New York Times : It came to me the other day: Were I to die, no one would say, "Oh, what a shame! So young, so full Of promise — depths unplumbable!" Instead, a shrug and tearless eyes Will greet my overdue demise; The wide response will be, I know, "I thought he [...]

I've got a little time available this morning to try and get caught up with part of the mountain of music sent to us. Again, to those that have sent stuff our way, just bear with me a while longer to get it all reviewed and shared as my workload the past few weeks has been considerable. I feel a bit guilty as some of the music has been sitting on my desktop for over a month, but after the next(and twice-delayed) shuttle launch, things should ease up a bit. Thanks! • • • • [...]
