I have a son who's one and a half years old, and there's so much life quality in Iceland when it comes to having children because it's so safe. It's such a good environment for kids to have the freedom to play. I have a big [...]

Ben Frost By The Throat (2009, Bedroom Community) RIYL = Jasper Tx, Machinefabriek, Animal Hospital, Lawrence English Ben Frost's music carves at your nerves. On his last record, Theory of Machines , Frost created a tension filled industrio-noise masterpiece filled with delayed climaxes of other worldly proportions. It was one of the few records that I have heard that can be more aptly described as an experience than simply as music. You don't just listen to it, you experience it. On By The Throat , Frost takes the [...]

The compilation will be released digitally in January 2010 with a pay-what-you-want system (minimum two Euros), and all the proceeds will go to Amnesty International's humanitarian aid projects in areas of conflict. Over 100 artists are participating in this effort from regions as diverse as Palestine, Algeria, Burundi and Iceland. What's cool about this compilation is that it's not one of those no-cred comps that features absolutely unknowns. [...]

I heard from Marc of Buffetlibre, Barcelona. Their forthcoming project PEACE, in which they collaborate with Amnesty International, is getting some hype. And here is a gorgeous track from it named Shadow Pool by Boat Beam from Madrid. Artists from over 50 countries have joined in and as the press release states: "the resulting compilation will be digitally available worldwide in January 2010, letting listeners pick their own price for the album, with a minimum of €2. All proceeds will go to Amnesty International's humanitarian aid projects in areas of conflict." Yes, I'm [...]

Mmk, I don't want to push down the Intimacy Project post or anything, but I just had to tell you two stories. One isn't really a story. The other is. The first happened probably two nights ago. I'd just gotten home from a fairly rough hangout and Virginia wasn't home and I didn't want to just sit around on my ass in front of the computer. On the ride home, I'd seen this guy a few blocks away holding up a sign saying, "ANYTHING HELPS." I'd seen this guy before. He was a part of the backpacking troubadours [...]

Kippi Kaninus - Happens Secretly Released October 5th on Brainlove Records Ltd Edition Digipack CD / MP3 download Kippi Kaninus is the alter ego of Gudmundur Vignir Karlsson from Reykjavik, Iceland. Kippi started small, with a self-released album in the year 2000. He made only [...]
Even a band as composed as Low must have rubbed hands with excitement at the prospect of playing a cathedral in downtown Kilkenny. The furrow they have tilled is entirely their own; telekinetic harmonies, distortion without sounding metallic; dark to light and back again, all within the blood-red lyrical themes that colour their glacial folk-rock. The Mormon husband and wife team of Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Parker have never knowingly rubbed creed in their audience's faces – no one wants to ever see the words 'Christian' and 'rock' fraternising. When they recorded 2002's sinisterly shimmering Trust [...]

As far as live music is concerned, there are special occasions...and then there's the divine marriage of a sublime venue and suitably magnificent act. Such are the acoustics and visual accoutrements of St. Canice's Cathedral – the second largest in Ireland, so I'm told – that the likes of 2 Unlimited could feasibly walk in here and pull an impressive gig out of their spandex cycling shorts. Conversely, Icelandic sirens Amiina could perform in the bottom of a skip and still make it feel like the most enchanted place on earth. Add the two together and it really [...]

I just wanted to say I am sitting here mouth agape. Amiina does that. I haven't been on the band wagon (no pun intended) for very long and I didn't find them myself - I believe it was the lovely Agnes over at It All Started With Carbon Monoxide who introduced me to this Icelandic 4-some. After finally *really* listening to their debut "Kurr" I am dumbfounded. The album named for the sound the birds make, or are said to make, in Iceland and I am not so sure that some don't [...]
Kilkenny Arts Festival 2009 kicks off next Friday the 7th and runs through to Saturday the 16th, offering a feast of visual art, classical music, theatre and dance, jazz world and traditional Irish music, literature, film, architecture, indie music, craft and children's events. There are many expected highlights; of particular excitement to State are the likes of Low and Amiina playing in the unique setting of St. Canice's Cathedral . This will be a rare chance to see these acts in such an astonishing venue. A full listing can be found here , [...]
this debut album from Jon Thor "Jónsi" Birgisson , the voice of Icelandic post-rockers Sigur R ó s , was written and recorded with his partner Alex Somers , with whom he has also produced an acclaimed body of visual art. with strings performed by long-term Sigur R ó s collaborators Amiina and a contribution by the Kopavogsdaetur choir, the album is a lush, blissful ambient experience, sounding much like Sigur R ó s but shornof the rock instrumentation, [...]
"Riceboy Sleeps" is the upcoming debut album by duo Jónsi & Alex, an artistic collaboration between Sigur Rós's singer Jón Þór Birgisson and boyfriend Alex Somers. It will feature only acoustic instrumental music and the collaboration of the string quartet Amiina (who are Sigur Rós' official string quartet), and the Kópavogsdætur Choir. If you are looking for the latest album by Sigur Ros to
