Chris Johnson of the notorious Deep Blues Festival reminded me of these two classic R.L. Burnside articles from the Wall Sreet Journal and The New Yorker: Catching Up: R.L. Burnside's "A Ass Pocket of Whiskey" By Jim Fusilli [...]

This past weekend, the Disco Biscuits held their annual summer extravaganza, Camp Bisco, at the Indian Lookout Country Club in Mariaville, New York. We'll let our own Carlos Detres give you the scoop, but let's just say that by weekend's end, this year's festivities proved to be one hell of an event. Mud, rain, flipped golf carts, pretty hippies, Tooly with his tow truck, and the Disco Biscuits. Those who attended pulled together through some of this season's worst weather (Coventry, anyone?) and made the best out of the situation. The torrential pour on Friday night [...]
Bringing the disparate styles of Jonathan Richman and Vic Chesnutt might not seem like an obvious bill, with Mr. Chesnutt on the rootsy folkier side of things, and Mr. Richman more known for his playful, troubadourian pop stylings but apparently they'd toured previously together and have also more recently recorded an album together along with drummer Tommy Larkin set for release later this year. I'd wished I'd arrived more promptly for Vic Chesnutt's set and while I didn't miss the longer suffering of the heat that engulfed the venue I regret missing a good bit of Mr. [...]

What a difference a day makes. Or does it? 24 hours earlier, I was stood right of the stage in the sweltering heat of the Wolverhampton Civic Hall. Tonight, I'm stood right of the stage in the sweltering heat of the Wolverhampton Civic Hall. While it's not fair to compare and contrast two vastly different bands, two gigs in two consecutive nights makes it near impossible not to. The band walks on stage. "Hello… we're Blur." Okay, this is just plain weird. Either I'm experiencing a major case of déjà-vu or Robin Pecknold is [...]

FRIDAY Peaches / Drums Of Death (Granada): I hate to sound like "Old Man DL," but the Peaches show I saw at Club Clearview circa 2000 (I believe) will be hard to top. It was a small setting, really low-key, not too much of a crowd to speak of, and Peaches taunted the audience and carried on as if she were headlining a 20 dollar a pop show at a big theater, as she will tonight. It's hard to imagine a time when electro/synth-punk whatever sounds were [...]

O n their second LP, these Austin-anchored psych-rockers amp up the voltage on the lysergic electricity fuelling their sunbaked motorcycle jams. Directions to See a Ghost keeps its feet firmly planted in the great American traditions of the chemical-fueled road trip and its closest confidant, the two-chord firestorm. The more straightforward, heavy blues-rock elements of the The Black Angels ' previous releases have molted away, leaving a sonic soldier ready to enlist in the drone-psych army alongside the Velvet Underground, the 13th Floor Elevators, Red Krayola, Spacemen 3, and the Psychic Ills. [...]

By the time I posted the CD changer piece , I had already moved on to a more finite problem, one that had already begun to take place in the comments . Ranking Jay's discography, The Blueprint 2 is top ranking by my standards (only after barely nipping The Black Album in a close race). The only problem for me is which disc: Disc One or Disc Two? Initially, I started to run with the first disc because it holds my favorite song off the [...]

Here is a list of all the Austin bands who will be performing (officially) at SXSW 2009. I found the list at Austin360 , and bolded those nearest and dearest to my heart. The schedule for SXSW is now live, and if you want an easy way to keep track of everything, simply click " Add their shows to my schedule " and you can automatically build a schedule with all the day parties and official showcases those bands are playing. As you may have heard, wristbands for SXSW are now [...]
I had complained that it was difficult to go through the 1,800+ band list on SXSW 's site and find what bands had been added and removed. A few hours later, a kind donewaiting.com reader (Jay Sutton) sent me lists of just the bands added and removed. He used computer magic. Silversun Pickups were added... Amanda Palmer, too... Lots and lots more.. (almost 800).. (Also, although not on the list, PJ Harvey is gonna be there too). Sadly, bands like The Vaselines and Raveonettes are no longer on the list. Could be an [...]

By now you have probably already heard all the negative reports and comments floating around the internet about the Laneway Festival in Melbourne. From the reviews, to the newspaper articles, to the many forums, on Twitter and on Facebook. The internet is jam packed full of punters venting their anger. I was (un)lucky enough to be given a free ticket to the festival. A free VIP ticket. Having been to the Laneway Festival in Sydney a few times I was keen to go to it in Melbourne. To experience what I thought would be a better version, after [...]

Land of Talk @ Horseshoe Tavern (Jan 15, 2009): photo by Michael Ligon concert review : Land of Talk , Zeroes , Little Scream @ Horseshoe Tavern (Toronto, Ontario) - January 15, 2009 A Montreal musical invasion took over Horseshoe Tavern on a blistery cold Thursday night last week. On the heels of their latest album "Some Are Lakes" , Land of Talk made good on a promise to reschedule a previously cancelled Toronto date, [...]

Hopefully everyone made it out to at least one of the amazing shows that was going on last night. The party continues this weekend so we will keep going with the previews. There are so many options this weekend regardless of your musical tastes. Here are some of our suggestions. What a way to start the year off! Saturday :: January 3rd The [...]

Eh oop, but it were grim in Dublin last night. Talk about a doleful, watery streak of an Autumn eve. That funny turning of time feeling was in the air too. Clock hands turning too quickly in moonlight. Toadstools emerging with uncommon speed from the season's mulch to greet a sun that's grey and exhausted before it's even risen. There was a familiar yet uncanny feeling last night. A feeling I think poets get more often than the rest of us. You know the one that steals just enough normality out of things to prick our thoughts with the tiniest [...]
