The White Stripes were not given 'mad bank' for the usage of their song [via commercial licensing]. It seems like they also got [...]

Every once in a while, I happen upon something at the store that consumes me. At the beginning of this year, I came across a copy of Jerry Garcia's "classic" 1972 album Garcia while processing a record collection. Inside the cover I found some tri-folded pieces of old fax paper that contained a letter from a raver chick to her friend. It was a Found (URL) goldmine. You can read the contents of the letter here . To that point, working at a record store and processing collections was only a cool job in theory. [...]
Bedouin Soundclash front-man Jay Malinowski is slated to make his debut as a solo artist with a 13-song LP next Tuesday. "Bright Lights and Bruises" will be Malinowski's first musical endeavor sans Soundclash bassist, and writing partner, Eon Sinclair since the two met in University eight years ago. While Malinowski's vocals will remind of the Juno-winning indie-reggae act, the tone of the album is markedly different. Created following the dismissal of former Soundclash drummer Pat Pengelly, mounting conflict surrounding the future of the band, and the collapse of a 7-year romantic relationship, Malinowski admits the album comes [...]
Best Coast's Bobb Bruno & Bethany Cosentino Hello everyone! Hope you all had a wonderful weekend. Far too many exceptional shows last week including last night's NO CANCER! Benefit show with No Age , Vivian Girls , Best Coast , Graham Forest , Darker My Love and more. I do believe Bethany from Best Coast 's performance as one of their most entertaining yet. [...]

Noted and with only two comments: one, this is a tragic story and two, the source is the right-leaning British Daily Mail . "U.S. Army soldier Joshua Tabor has admitted to waterboarding his 4-year-old daughter because she couldn't recite the alphabet, according to police. Tabor, stationed at Ft. Lewis, Washington, was arrested after being seen walking around his neighborhood wearing a military-issue Kevlar helmet and threatening to break windows. Cops went to Tabor's home and spoke with his girlfriend, who told them she found the girl hiding in a closet with bruises and scratches on her back and neck. [...]

Once again at the Milton Hardball Café on Wednesday February 3rd I had another interview right after the last one with USS but this time around the interview came from none other than Alex of illScarlett. Another favorite band of mine that I got to interview and soon enough this night had transformed into one of the best times I've ever had at any show. For those of you who don't know, Alex is the lead singer of now widely popular Canadian band illScarlett, and after the band had finished their sound check for that night, he sat down with [...]
... And we're back. Sorry for the silence on the blog the last few weeks. I was pretty consumed with campaign work for most of the latter half of January (and the beginning of February), and didn't have much in the way of free time to devote to the blog. However, now that the primaries are over, things are essentially back to normal, so hopefully the blog will be too. Anyway, here's what's going on in Chicago this week in terms of shows. Not a huge week, at least in terms of stuff I'm looking [...]

Emma , the BBC's adaptation of Jane Austen's comic novel is at the top of my DVD shopping list this week. Another literary adaptation in stores tomorrow is the animated Dante's Inferno . Among the week's more interesting theatrical releases are the Coen Brothers' A Serious Man and Bronson , the gritty story of Britain's most violent prisoner. The extended edition of The People Speak is a film [...]

Who : The Ruby Suns Title : Fight Softly Release Date : March 2nd Label : Sub Pop Thoughts : As a huge fan of The Ruby Suns last effort, Sea Lion , I was a bit concerned when I heard that Ryan McPhun and company were going to veer away from the catchy indie pop that had so fully endeared me and countless others to the band in the [...]
The Philadelphia Inquirer looks back on the literary career of George Orwell, 60 years after his death. NPR's All Things Considered profiles poet and singer-songwriter Gil Scott-Heron . In the Los Angeles Times , Dani Shapiro examines the pressures on young writers to be successful. The Calgary Herald remembers singer-songwriter Vic Chesnutt . [...]

• Have you ever wondered why time flies when you're older? No? Okay, then there's no reason for you to read the next few sentences. If this is something you wonder about, scientists are here to help. They say it has a lot to do with "firsts." That is to say, you can recall your first kiss or your first summer vacation much more clearly than your last. Our memories apparently contain more information and details from first times than any other times. As we repeat experiences as adults, we stores information differently. We are "embroidering a bank [...]
"See these fans can't resist the rush/they Wu-Tang for life," Method Man cries out in his first and certainly not last verse on the long-awaited Raekwon album. Only Built for Cuban Linx II. In a way, Meth speaks the truth. There are people who know the Wu-Tang Clan and then there are people who know the Wu-Tang Clan. The first group may have heard the classics such as Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) , Liquid Swords , Tical, Cuban Linx I, various Ol' Dirty Bastard tracks and have [...]
Vol. 1: Popcovers Vol. 2: Folk Covers We've wrangled a bit with the term "indie" here before, both in regards to its relationship with folk music, and as a source for coverage. Today, though, the term is merely a catch-all for coverage, loosely defined; after all, songsource being what it is, much modern music is neither folk nor fowl, neither pop nor pap, but that precious still-underground stuff which claims neither major label nor traditional affiliation. We'll have a [...]

Click image to download full album Song: Download audio file (Such-Great-Heights.mp3) What Others Say: It's easy to forget how amazing this album sounded back in 2003, especially since it spawned an army of mediocre imitators. Electronica-based indie pop is an established branch of indie rock these days, but no one's managed to do it as good as Jimmy Tamborello and Ben Gibbard did it with Give Up, the duo's first and only album. While the novelty [...]
Peace to Teddy Ruck-Spin for sending this my way. One Be Lo and Red Pill freestyle over the ubiquitous "I Wanna Rock" instrumental. One Be Lo's B.A.B.Y. (Being A Black Youth) has a tentative release date in late April. Could be a preliminary album of the year contender if the One Man Army stays as consistent and sharp as he usually is.
If you missed Sunday night's Grammy Awards, you didn't miss much. In fact, if you saw the American Music Awards, you pretty much saw the Grammys: Another freak show from Lady Gaga, performers trying to out-shock each other with more glitz than talent, and more crap offered up by the Black Eyed Peas. By the time Jamie Foxx came out in an army uniform pretending to be an opera singer and auto-tuned his way through what he thought was a song, I realized I was witnessing the implosion of American popular music. Where to start? I already mentioned Ms. Gaga, [...]

This is a postscript to the one from the other day that looked at some well known names who were compelled to sing for England. The ones I selected were the "best" in the bunch of tunes which were either designed to earn a bit of coin for themselves or to raise money for others. There were a couple of other songs done in which groups of "celebrities" were gathered together in the name of charidee (mate) - and yes it was for a good cause, but they really should have just [...]
In keeping with their preference The Chieftains have recently teamed up with a host of other artists, including their old partners in crime, Ry Cooder , for their first album in over six years, which is due out in March. The concept album San Patricio tells the story of the Wild Geese who deserted the US Army to the better paying Mexican Army during the American-Mexican War 1846–1848 (though most either died or were executed in 1847). Last week, a live 'media only' performance previewing this release reached the RTE studios. The public [...]

Tila Tequila is not the sharpest tool in the shed, but no one ever accused her of being smart, now have they? Apparently, Tila said she was sent protection in the form of bodyguards from fiancee Casey Johnson . Weird enough yet? Keep reading... Those are her "bodyguards" sent from Casey. She tweeted, "This is the FIRST TIME I am smiling & happy again because I know in my heart that my baby [...]
