Andrew Belle's newest LP, The Ladder , will be (self) released February 23, 2010, and we've got a brilliant little preview track for you in "Static Waves". Perfectly suited for any primetime soap-opera (or, in today's age, any show, really), "Static Waves" mixes in Belle's baritone folk tone with Katie Herzig's delicate and airy harmony. The orchestral mix of strings, bells and keys makes "Static Waves" an immediate go-getter. Bottom line: It's a pop treaure; one that you'll soon be hearing on TV and everyone will be going, "what's that song??" But you, my friends, will know. [...]

It's time once again to highlight some the hip, indie music that soundtracks ads from cars, beers, phones, to climate change (you didn't think the indie rock in commercials trend was going away, did you?). So for all you Hulu / DVR watchers that are missing out on all the joys of live television, here's a few of the best songs that creative departments and ad agencies are harvesting for mass consumption. MP3s and link to video included. Cadillac: Watch Commercial I'd be willing to venture a guess that this is the most played [...]

I'm a sucker for songs that really paint a picture for me. Husband and wife duo You & Yourn do just that with their somber acoustic songs. Full of fog and mist they evoke such still but very raw meaningful moments in their music. It is almost like the dark green moss on a tree after the rain hold the drops of water so perfectly until they slide down to the cold earth. If you are feeling down then I'd get a hot cup of something and curl up in a blanket and throw on some You & [...]

I first saw Haley Bonar opening for Andrew Bird at the High Noon Saloon in 2006 . I was hooked and have since lost count of how many times I've played her fabulous album, Lure the Fox . Since then, Madison has been fortunate to have Haley return on many occasions, most recently behind her equally great album, Big Star . Haley Bonar returns to the High Noon Saloon for a $10 show on Friday, November 20th . [...]
St. Vincent has been touring Europe with Grizzly Bear and now a collaboration with Grizzly Bear guitarist Daniel Rossen has been recorded and put up on Youtube. She does have a history of collaborating with tour mates from John Vanderslice to Andrew Bird. The duo played a... Click the link to read more
Benefit albums and Tom Waits both seem to really "in" these days. Recently, the legendary Preservation Hall Jazz Band decided to combine the best of both worlds and create the incredibly down-to-business titled Preservation, an Album Benefiting Preservation Hall and Its Music Outreach Program . As a recently issued press release explains (via who else? TFB ), "over the last year, more than 20 of American music's most exciting artists traveled to Preservation Hall in New Orleans to collaborate with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band on classic New Orleans repertoire." Among those 20 artists [...]
Contrast Podcast recently asked music bloggers like myself to submit our favorite 50 songs of the year for their annual "Festive 503 podcast. Our selections were then compiled into a shortlist and now we've been asked to recruit votes to narrow it down. For the curious, I've bolded the 10 songs I personally voted for. I really, really want "Nice Very Nice" by Kurt Vonnegut & Dave Soldier (from their album Ice-9 Ballads ) to make the final list. Not only because it's my favorite song of the year, from my favorite album of the year, [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , Exclusive There's a good chance that the Heartless Bastards have had a busier year than you. The Cincinnati-based blues-rock band spent almost all of 2009 hitting the road hard behind its third album, the huge-riffing The Mountain,' with giant indie rock names like the Decemberists , the Black Keys , Andrew Bird , Jenny Lewis and Wolfmother . When they weren't touring, they were --surprise! -- still playing music. In February, the Bastards played on [...]

Matter of Time mp3 The Leisure Society The Sleeper ..... ..... buy it Well, now this is getting interesting... Over at the Contrast Podcast , Tim's solicited everyone for their favorite 50 songs of 2009, remember? From all the responses he's compiled the top 155. I'm very impressed with the list! If you didn't submit your faves yet, you've still got a chance to get in the game at this point! Help us out, eh? (I"ve highlighted my top 10 in blue) Here's [...]

By Jon Stone | @jwstone Over the weekend I saw three shows in Champaign-Urbana. Each show was a good show-great even. But wow, were they different experiences. This disparateness is one of the things that makes thinking and writing about music appealing: parsing through the musical experience looking for clues and connections of their quality with our resulting affinity. My goal here is to review each of these shows but also make a larger argument (that includes some theorizing-sorry: academic alert) about why it is we like the music we do and what [...]

Click here to view the embedded video. In many ways, the new music video for "Ready, Able" matches my feelings for the lush track off of Veckatimest , one of the year's best albums. The video's best moments (see colorful melting at :47, potential alien abduction at 1:53, and awesome clay, stop-motion transformations at 3:26) come at the song's most thrilling moments- jolts of orchestration and psychedelic jamming are recreated with colorful, magnificent feats of claymation. The video is also strange and original, much like the song with its oddly unorthodox [...]
1. I just discovered this weird blog that has lots of cool, rare music by Hendrix, ukelele Beatles coverers, and even Burt "Robin" Ward! Check it out! And drop a comment telling him I sent you. 2. Cover Me has a "songs about stalkers" post, here , with some interesting covers of The Police and U2, among others. 3. This picture is funny because the tennis balls represent my love and the cops represent all the people who are too afraid to be loved by a man with a gigantic [...]

Day Glo by Brazos . Indie Music Filter : Hey Tony, what do you think of ' Day Glo ' by Austin's Brazos ? Tony VonPervieux : Dude, really cool song. I dig the vibe especially. Feels like a nice montage moment song. It's like a beautiful slow moving train with the windows open to a world of amazing scenery, lush vivid landscapes. Makes me feel good. IMF : I dig it as well. Something about their sound that reminds me of Midlake , [...]
Once again, the people behind the Spoon Train Audio -label have made a compilation of independent pop from Oslo. The album is called "Oslo23 and features 16 songs from 16 bands, - most of them are bands we already know, but some are completely new to us. This is the follow up to last years "Oslo!" , and this time they have managed to refine the pop-focus they have on these compilations. Less fuzz, more melody. Before I start commenting on the music, I must give two thumbs up for [...]
Following the long awaited announcement last week regarding the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' sideshows, it seemed as good as time as ever to do a quick little summary of the billion or so gigs that are happening over this year's summer festival season. I am sure this is incomplete, so feel free drop any I have missed into the comments. Akron/Family Thursday, December 10: Corner Hotel, Melbourne Saturday, December 12: Annandale Hotel, Sydney Tuesday, December 15: Kings Arms, Auckland Wednesday, December 16: TBA, Wellington Al Green Saturday, [...]

Regular readers may recall that I first fell in love with the powerful, confessional Americana folk of Signature Sounds artist Caroline Herring after last year's Lantana , a tour de force concept album of sorts which evoked a broad set of southern women's voices struggling with their own claims to power and the lack thereof. As we wrote last month on the cusp of its release , Herring's newest album, Golden Apples of the Sun , is a stunner, too, and I'm happy to report that it's garnering the attention it deserves, [...]

Wednesday 10 November 2009 Photo: Tim Ferguson I always do my best to see support acts, even when, in the case of Islington's Union Chapel , there's a great pub nearby for some pre-show pints. This habit was rewarded on Wednesday when I saw Moriarty open for Andrew Bird . I'd never heard of the Franco-American collective before but apparently they are "big in France" and the Guardian [...]
In thinking about the end of this year coming up in a month or so, I decided to go through my music collection. I came across the "Dark Was the Night" CD, which features a lot of artists teaming up. These include: Andrew Bird, Bon Iver, The Books featuring Jose Gonzalez, Cat Power [...]
