looking at the list of artists, and committed artists, this is very tempting and ten bucks for a year is pretty much a steal. to top it all off, gord downie and the sadies are the featured artist of the month offering up a cover of randy newman's "louisiana, 1927." here's the info, taken straight from the press release, on the swim drink fish music club and a few tracks from club below that. the swim drink fish music club is an online music and audio experience @ swim drink fish music developed by lake [...]

The subtitle of this post is: Two stiff drinks that go great together. If you've ever enjoyed a drunken sing-a-long, here are two fine choices for you. First, Gogol Bordello is probably a familiar name to some of you-they make in-your-face, aggressive and filthy Russian rock. They're a nine-member band, so there's never time to breath. Songs often feature multiple, simultaneous melodies-a chaotic, whirling dervish of fun and gypsy punk. Their new album (and DVD package) is a collection of live songs (some but not all from the DVD) and outtakes. It starts out by grabbing [...]

If you're at all familiar with the sordid past of psych-rock pioneer Roky Erickson , than you know that it was only a few years ago that the possibility of ever seeing him perform live seemed about as likely as a warm winter in Toronto. His heavily permissive lifestyle back in the 60's while he was the leader of seminal psychsters the 13th Floor Elevators led to his being diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia in 1968, resulting in jailtime, electroshock therapy, and even a brief stint where he believed that aliens were coming to Earth to do him harm. It [...]
I've got another song for everyone tonight, this time coming from the Montreal indie-rock/pop act Islands . No You Don't comes from the band's 3rd full-length album Vapours , released on September 22nd of this year. Fans of the now defunct Canadian indie band The Unicorns will recognize key Islands members Nicholas Thorburn and Jamie Thompson, who are once again collaborating on a musical project. This particular song was long-listed for CBC Radio 3 's annual Bucky Award for song of the year this morning. Public voting for the Bucky long-lists will be [...]

Friday, October 30, 2009 Today's Quick Mention: There's some absolutely huge shows in town this weekend, but I think I'll be staying in and resting up so that I'll be able to yell my head off at the Dallas Cowboys game on Sunday. Sorry, Black Angels, Butthole Surfers/Peaches and Gogol Bordello/Apostle Of Hustle. Proving that everything is worth giving a listen no matter how questionable it seems, today's act is a good one that willingly call themselves Total Babe and just so happen [...]
Today's tune is a cover of the Stars classic One More Night , from their cheekily titled 2007 remix album Do You Trust Your Friends ; the album features covers of Stars songs from artists such as Final Fantasy , The Most Serene Republic , Metric , and Young Galaxy . This particular cover is done by Broken Social Scene lead guitarist Andrew Whiteman 's project Apostle of Hustle . The cover does well in reworking the song into a completely distinct version, while still maintaining enough of the original [...]

Although Lawrence has this great reputation as being a center of indie music culture, the audiences can be less than welcoming and rather apathetic. It takes a rare breed of band to get the crowds moving and singing, so you know you're at a special show when there is an interaction between the artist and crowd. Gogol Bordello was one such show. Apostle of Hustle opened up with what sounded like space age salsa music. The touring duo used a pre-recorded voice to give song introductions and what I dubbed their "space age" [...]

Heady and ensconsed in a thickly artistic and principally operated, philosophical world, Ryan Lenssen comes to the table relaxed and 'as is'. We're off the record, and dialogue is a comfortable free-flow between us. We agree we both like interviews this way. Of a special crop, Lennsman is outspoken - a veritable nonstop train of expression. Not only is he thoughtful, educated and intelligent, but he is also a willing representative for his large, playful, slightly offbeat Canadian liquid-pop crew, The Most Serene Republic . Signed to the Arts & Crafts family (Broken Social Scene, [...]

DOWNLOAD: M4A / iTUNES Here is the nineteenth installment to PMA's monthly/bimonthly/mostly irregular podcast. This podcast is the longest running gag I have ever kept up on the blog. In fact, the pmaCAST turns 1 on December 23rd! Because we are approaching this oh so important milestone, I found it fit to bring some game. From now on, the pmaCAST will be available in the M4A file format. I know that the move from MP3 to M4A will freak people out, but I promise you, it's for [...]

I had a nice little trip out to NY, saw family & friends, caught an improv show in the city (Magnet Theater....it was hilarious) and saw Paranormal Activity (It did what it was supposed to...scare the fuck out of me). Now it's back to business... No Kuestionnaire today, I just back yesterday and barely had time to piece one together, but I'll make that up for you this weekend as we will be getting exclusive access to the Treasure Island Festival ! So expect some surprises and awesome 'treasures' [...]

Blk Jks Play Spaceland On Thursday Nights like Thursday are just a cruel joke to live music fans. It's another insane week of shows - old legends, new legends, 90's heroes and current Pitchfork darlings. I caught Polvo last Saturday. The problems I had with their set list a few months back at the Echoplex were corrected. Great set. They played everything I wanted to hear. Monday 10/12/09 [Pick of the Night] Light FM [...]
