MUST-SEE SHOW: 11/23 Jay Reatard @ Brillobox This is worth going to if only to see what all the fuss is about. I've been reading about this guy nonstop over the past couple years, but for some reason, I thought he was a teenager. Turns out he's 29. A few weeks ago he tweeted that his entire band quit on him. Hopefully they'll have their shit together by the time the Brillobox show rolls around. ALSO WORTH ATTENDING: 11/4 OK Go @ Mr. Small's [...]

Just a few days ago, the new Schubas -operated Lincoln Park venue Lincoln Hall released some teaser photos of the beautiful interior of the new club. Well now, via the venue's website lincolnhallchicago.com , they've begun announcing artists that look to be playing the new club in the near future. A banner in the middle of the page offers artists/band names with photos and the "Coming Soon" tag. There's still no word on the official opening date of the venue. A complete list of the artists appearing on the promo banner [...]

Twang EPK at YouTube If you've heard one George Strait album, the mantra goes, then you've heard 'em all. Then why am I the proud owner of over a dozen of Strait's 38 albums? I bought his first album, Strait Country , as a new release, in 1981. The first song on that first album, "Unwound" , is still one of my favorites. And Strait sings "El Rey" , the final song of his predictably fine new release Twang [...]

The Connecticut-based performer signed with Rock Ridge Music in 2008, and hit the studio with label President Jason Spiewak in New York City to record his full-length debut. In addition to the NYC sessions, Andrew traveled South to work with Chris Henderson of 3 Doors Down fame at his Rivergate Studios in Hendersonville, Tennessee. "I am very grateful everything Rock Ridge Music has [...]

Rumor has it that LES spot Rockwood Music Hall (196 Allen Street, NY, NY) will be expanding its current, limited-capacity venue. Have you heard that? The intimate venue, is known for being a great place to see a live show and for hosting surprise/secret performances by well-known artists like Ryan Adams and Norah Jones (under the guise of side-bands like The Sloppy Joannes and Puss n Boots ). In fact, Puss n Boots is scheduled [...]

Song Pontiak ~ " Honey " myspace plays: 720 mp3 download (via thrilljockey ) Pontiak comes with a psychedelic, fuzzed out, grungy guitar, and heavy slow drum sound. When I first heard this, I thought they were going to be from Austin. I was surprised to find out that the three Carney brothers are from rural Virginia. Maker was released on Tuesday. [...]

Last week ended up being pretty busy. I saw the Radar Bros. and Le Switch last Sunday at Kid Rockers at the Echo. If you've got a kid (not that I do), I highly recommend the event. Good fun. Then I saw a little bit of Nico Stai on Monday. On Wednesday I braved the crowd for The Pains of Being Pure at Heart and White Denim at Spaceland. The Pains of Being Pure at Heart have some good songs, but they're not that interesting live. White Denim is fun to see live, but don't really have great songs yet. [...]

Am I the biggest Fleetwood Mac fan ever? Definitely not. I'm pretty much a Rumours and Greatest Hits guy, although I can get into Tusk now and then. Still, everyone's gotta recognize that Rumours is one of the greatest rock albums ever, and most of their hits are solid. Plus, lotsa indie folks have covered them. So, they get an A to Z. Their most covered song, by far, is "Dreams." In this A to Z, I'm gonna rate the Dreams covers against the original, which rates an A+ as a pop [...]

Vienna Teng's fourth album Inland Territory will be released on April 7th. Vienna's new song cycle is as elegant and moving as her previous release Dreaming Through The Noise , yet the multi-instrumental help of The Paper Raincoat 's Alex Wong adds a new dimension to her singer-pianist style. She is also joined by guests Kaki King, Noe Venable, Ari Hest, and Odessa Chen. In another life You & I worked West Virginia coal mines Side by side Collecting the black dust [...]
Hana Pestle has announced that she will hit the road for a 2009 tour with the likes of Sister Hazel, Pat McGee and Ari Hest. The dates will kick off this week in Baton Rouge, LA on February 11th. Hana is adding new tracks from her forthcoming album to the set list including "Need" as well as cover songs from Muse, REM, and Radiohead. The nineteen year old singer/songwriter has been working to get her song "Need" placed in the Twilight sequel, New Moon, and even though the song has already infiltrated the Twilight [...]

I can't believe I haven't done this one yet! The indie and indie-minded love to cover some Petty. He may be terrible at taxes, but he's great at writing songs. The zip file does NOT have the direct-linked ez archive songs in it; just the savefile ones. A is for Tom's most famous song . . . American Girl-Melora Creager B is for Backyard Tire Fire's tribute to this great songwriter . . . Tom Petty-Backyard Tire Fire C is for Change the Locks-Keller [...]
