Portland's many excellent taquerias have been omitted, as everyone there already has their favorites. El Buen Sabor (Mission District, San Francisco) Best chile relleno burrito. Taco Zone Truck (Echo Park, Los Angeles) Anything on wheels just tastes better. La Especial Norte (Leucadia, Calif.) Great sit-down place right by Leucadia beach—good combo plates and margarita pitchers. El Taco Veloz (Chicago) Amazing late-night or anytime taqueria; simple and delicious. Tamale House (Austin) Excellent migas. Strangely, they do [...]

Tonight's the record release show for new Portland band And I Was Like, What? Uh, what? No, that's their name. And I Was Like, What? .... got it? The group includes members of other bands like AristeiA, Songs from the Rodeo, and Emma Hill, and the EP is called Grand Delusions . It's the sound of four friends who grew up in the PacNW, crusing from the coast to the forest to the desert, with some hints of pop, country, and indefinable Northwest flavor lining the rough-hewn songs. It's a really good listen. [...]

Dear AristeiA , It's been too long. I've missed you. There's a laundry list of things I've wanted to say but haven't in the past year. I've been busy. Things are good; I just get distracted. I'm sorry I haven't made it down to Portland to see any of your amazing shows and I'm sorry we haven't spoken in a while. I'd like to take a moment and rectify that because, despite my being vacant, I do have strong feelings for you. You see, [...]

This should have gone up sometime last week, but I was too lazy overworked to get it up. Stay tuned for more from the AristeiA boys, including a potential show at my old college! -Ed. Day 1: Wed, March 18th Day- Got to the Belmont on 6th street at about noon and had some coffee. Right off the bat we met some people who want to move to Portland. Typical. Also, as soon as the coffee was gone we noticed that there was free Dos Equis. The [...]
There are so many great songs about Texas. Jimmie Rodgers "'T' For Texas" and the great Marty Robbins' "El Paso" are two that come to mind quickly for me. But three days ago, walking alone waist deep in the gulf waters of post-spring break Port Aransas, I found myself singing another Texas song. Pete Krebs "Purple Heart of Texas" is my favorite tune ever written about the Lone Star state (you can hear it here ). Unsent letters and sleepy highways are images that resonate with me, but Krebs' soulful, weary delivery just hurts me. And for some reason, [...]

Written by Fense The music AristeiA ( MySpace ) creates is surreal. In a live setting, the sound is deafening. It has the ability to surround one so completely, one can slip into a trance. On record, the effect is similar, but best experienced through large headphones. How To Kill A King is the latest from AristeiA, and features a new percussionist. How To Kill A King is a fitting name for this six song EP. [...]

Written by Fense In music, it is very rare to create something entirely new. To break ground would be to christen a new instrument, one that does something bizarre, one that sounds like no other. Or to use an instrument in a way that has never been done before. Moments like these have spawned great works - my recent viewing and subsequent coverage of Kraftwerk And The Electronic Revolution comes to mind. Another artist along these lines could be Wolf Eyes. Can you [...]

I hate it when a band falls through the cracks. Or, more accurately, when I fail to give my proper due. So consider this my sincere apology for failing to really say much of anything about How to Kill a King , the new record from Portland's best post-instrumental rockers AristeiA. Everything about "Feedback King"—from the title-that's-so-perfect-you're -shocked-Mogwai-didn't-use-it to the songs' beautiful assault of reverberating guitars, crashing, resistant slo-mo drums and heavenly background synths—screams "EPIC." Yet the song succeeds not because of its resemblance to similar instrumental acts like Explosions in the Sky and Mono but instead [...]
