Photo by Eric Schuman For this month's Key Studio Video Session, we profiled Arrah and the Ferns , the country-tinged four piece that self-released its latest EP, Soldier Ghost , in fall of 2011. In our interview, singer-guitarist Arrah Fisher talks about coming to Philadelphia from Muncie, Indiana; finding her voice as a songwriter; and the affinity for old country music she discovered after moving to a new city. Watch the video and download the Key Studio Session below, and catch the band in concert on March 2 when it plays Milkboy Philly [...]

We received an email from Steve Goldberg earlier today that his band Steve Goldberg and the Arch Enemies is on hiatus. However, he does have a new lo-fi synthpop project called Resistor . You can take a listen to his debut single called "First World Problems" HERE . Resistor's first show will be on Friday, March 2 at MilkBoy Philly with Arrah and the Ferns .

Last night, Arrah And The Ferns dropped by the XPN studios to record a Key Studio Video Session . In addition to the audio and video, we were able to shoot a few photos. As a preview, you can check out the photos above; the full session will be posted in a few weeks.

Kicking off this evening at Kung Fu Necktie is Philly's own The Love Club with their bluesy, psychedelic rock 'n' roll that teeters on explosiveness and chillness. Led by David Mitchell Esparza a.k.a. (((Taco))), prepare for a musical voyage through fuzz and time to a land of electrical, droning din. With Roy Orbison-tinged vocals if he sang through an electric fan and had a drunken drawl from taking half a bottle of Jack to the head, I could see how (((Taco))) might find some ladies tonight to join his private "love club." They'll be sharing a free bill [...]

One of several musical pursuits of David Mitchell Esparza - aka (((taco))) - The Love Club deals in steamy, noisy electric blues, raw and right to the point. Today's Philly Local Phile spotlights "Blow," an unapologetic cautionary tale from their 2011 EP, Of Love and Other Demons . Stream it below, or take in the racket in person when The Love Club plays a free show at Kungfu Necktie this Thursday, Dec. 22, opening for Arrah and the Ferns and Chandelier Ballroom.

As expected, The Extraordinaires ' Holiday Revue last Friday at Kung Fu Necktie was quite a festive occasion. The place was filled with plenty of friends and fans soaking in the good vibes. Conversations with Enemies kicked things off with a joyous romp through some of new tunes from their upcoming album as well as a Xmas classic and "ugly holiday sweater" contest. It was kind of a pre-party as they waited for frontman Josh Craft's birthday to come at midnight which included his own celebration later on at Barcade. The Extraordinaires also treated the crowd with [...]

For their ambitious third album The Flood , Steve Goldberg and the Arch Enemies set out to create a major production that featured a HUGE ensemble of drums, bass, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, vocals, more vocals, violin, viola, cello, piano, trombone, trumpet, clarinet, flute, glockenspiel, handclaps, and various other percussive pieces. The bulk of it was recorded between Turtle Studios and Sweden in Northern Liberties, and the end result is a beautiful 5-song baroque pop EP that gives Goldberg and his friends/enemies much to celebrate and they'll be doing just that tonight at Johnny Brenda's. Joined them [...]

Expect the unexpected and plenty of holiday cheer tonight at Kung Fu Necktie when The Extraordinaires ' Holiday Revue takes over! You'll be treated to sets by our eccentric hosts and Conversations with Enemies . Then they'll be transforming the stage into a cozy living room for a Pee-Wee's Playhouse-esque live television show with performances of classic holiday tunes and entertaining skits which will include guest appearances from members of Dr. Dog , Man Man , The Armchairs , and more! Life is about to get very strange soon. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. [...]

Laura Marling FRIDAY, DECEMBER 9th Laura Marling 's initial musical success wasn't so much an option as it was a way of life. Raised in the English countryside by a music teacher, it was evident early on that Marling's innate talent would inevitably guide her in the direction of folk music. By the age of 20, Marling had produced two well-recognized full-length albums and had toured with fellow Brit-folk stars, Noah And The Whale and Mumford And Sons. Now, only a year later, she's released another album, A Creature I [...]

Below is an in-studio performance of "Waterproof Gold Watch" by Arrah and the Ferns at Love Drunk Studio in Omaha, NE. It was recorded on November 10, 2011 while they are currently on tour in support of the band's latest EP Soldier Ghost . (You can read our recent interview with Arrah Fisher about the album as well as other things HERE .) Thanks to Philebrity for the heads up about the posting. Arrah and the Ferns And now three reasons to celebrate the big Bears victory by boot and scooting on over to Panchos tonight... 1. Arrah and the Ferns offer an indie rock approach so sweet and full wide eyed optimism that I wouldn't be surprised if one of their songs soundtracks a pivotal scene in the next hipster-chic box office smash that will inevitably star Michael Cera. On their latest EP, Soldier Ghost , the Philadelphia outfit injects a good amount of country and/or bluegrass tendencies [...]

rjd2 is opening tonight at Union Transfer for, well...himself. Actually, he's paired up with Aaron Livingston ( The Mean ) for his latest soulful project Icebird, and this evening will be their Philly live performance debut. Icebird just dropped their new full-length album The Abandoned Lullaby earlier this week, and have been on a mini-tour as a five-piece band testing out the material. But rjd2 will also be throwing down for his fans to close out the evening. You should definitely get there early to catch show opener and another brilliant hometown sound artist Lushlife [...]
Arrah & the Ferns are digitally releasing a new 6-song EP entitled Soldier Ghost . The band has gone through many changes since their humble beginnings in Muncie, Indiana (HUDSUCKER PROXY!), but what has remained constant are their infectiously fun, upbeat tunes and the truly charming vocals of the former Midwestern Christian turned Philly agnostic songstress, Ms. Arrah Fisher. And though she was welcomed to our City of Brotherly Love with a mugging at gunpoint, her songwriting still remains hopeful. Arrah & the Ferns will be celebrating their release tonight at PhilaMOCA with other Deli faves Univox [...]

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 14 Deer Tick takes all the right steps to stay disheveled yet oddly dapper. Though members of the Providence-based group typically come equipped with the standard beards and other facial hair common for their country-tinged folk genre, they still manage to channel a retro, Don Draper-esque appreciation for suit jackets and nice shades. This same balance between shabby and chic resonates in the group's relentlessly heavy emphasis on guitar-driven rock, songs often wavering between thick, overwhelming chord progressions and delicate, almost dainty, riffs. The opening track of the group's latest album, [...]

On their latest single, "Wake Up," Philly's Arrah and the Ferns lets down their guard and totally embraces a sound they've long hinted at a fondness for: country music. The jangly guitar lines and gang-vocal chorus sound like its bouncing off the lofty ceiling of Nashville's famed Ryman Auditorum - in the best possible way. The song comes from Soldier Ghost , the new EP the Ferns are releasing tomorrow at a Phila MOCA appearance with Univox and Conversations with Enemies. Arrah and the Ferns - Wake Up [...]

Check out the new music video from Arrah and the Ferns for the lead single "Wake Up" off their upcoming 6-song EP Soldier Ghost . The album will be available digitally on Friday, October 14, and they will be celebrating its release the same evening at PhilaMOCA with Conversations with Enemies and Univox . The animation and video was creatively done by Purple Riot 's Kelly Gallagher. Enjoy!

There are way too many things to do this weekend, but these are our picks. Of course, you should be at the Cloud Entertainment and Deli Magazine presented Rock and Read Festival on Saturday which aims to raise awareness of educational and musical organizations while delivering a heaping pile of music at Bookspace on Saturday. Headlining the event will be legendary carnival punk rockers Mischief Brew , and this might just be the bands last Philly show before the release of their upcoming album, The Stone Operation . Another appropriately featured act will be Harry & The Potters, [...]
Arrah Fisher and Carl Stovner moved to Philadelphia in 2008, leaving their band and their old home of Muncie, Indiana, behind. But the local scene proved so inviting, they couldn't keep away from music entirely. Last year, a revived Arrah and the Ferns released its second album, All the Bad in One Place, filling out the lineup with locals Mike Harkness (of The Armchairs) on drums, Ryan Belski (of The Divine Lorraine and Lady) on guitar and Buddy Szczesniak on bass. The album is an impressive, eclectic romp of country, blues, singer-songwriter pop and indie rock - including [...]

OK, you should know by now that we are presenting Hair Rocket 's Philly Release Party tonight at Bookspace w/ Mammal of Paradise , An American Chinese , Meddlesome Bells and Bambara.
