Since its inception, Mukilteo, Washington's very own progressive power trio The Fall Of Troy has attempted to blaze its own infernos of musical wizardry. Their key to success? They use different lighters each time. Each of the band's earlier albums (2005's Doppelganger and 2007's Manipulator ) offered some things unique from most other bands. This is the same case for the trio's newest slice of post-hardcore prophecy, In The Unlikely Event . The Fall Of Troy's trademark erratic guitar shredding, combined with off-tempo and brutally abrupt changes, secures these prog-rock and King Crimson descendants [...]
When Arctic Monkeys hit Fallon they did so with the swaggering " Crying Lightning ." Things got a bit more balladic for Craig Ferguson. When we weighed in Humbug , we mentioned some of Alex Turner's best lines appear on "Cornerstone": [We get] "I thought I saw you in the battleship / but it was only a lookalike... / ... She was close, close enough to be your ghost / But my chances turned to toast when I asked her if I could call her your name." By the song's end, because this is [...]
Sunday, September 20, 2009 If I wasn't concerned with watching 12 hours of pro football today I think I'd be cycling through my favorite Patrick Swayze flicks. What an actor. I mean, how many people could really do something like Dirty Dancing, and then even be remotely considered for a role in anything as badass as Roadhouse? News! Read on. - The Rundown - Some are saying that because of the sudden ousting of chairman Dick Cook at Disney, [...]
When I first heard Jelly Roll Morton's Red Hot Peppers in freshman jazz history class, his music honestly didn't make much of an impression, probably for the usual reasons early jazz tends not to speak to 18-year olds. (Was I full of shit ? I plead the Fifth.) All I can say is that the music felt so completely alien to what I'd checked out previously -- full of old-timey sound effects ("cha-ooo-ga" car horns, foghorns, animal sounds) and a time feel I didn't recognize as having anything to do with jazz. Louis Armstrong, Earl Hines, James P., and [...]

Most Tori concert Internet reviews start the same way. "This was my nth show, I've been a fan since 19XX, Album X, Tori was SOOOO GOOOOOD" I'll try not to do that. Instead here's my own fuzzy memory transcript of a conversation I had with Tori Amos on September 19, 2001, at the Virgin Megastore in Union Square, Manhattan, New York: ME: So Tori, the next time you do a covers album, a little Queen would be nice. TORI: I was gonna do Killer Queen! ME: Aw, what happened? TORI: Might play it [...]

A nautical lifesaver hangs centered on an abalone and starfish studded fishing net festooning on a pale brick backyard wall like a giant bat. The draped display is an inspired backdrop for an aqua tile trimmed swimming pool decked in battleship grey and furnished with a wooden diving board, redwood bench, trio of mismatched aluminum chairs and a round table shaded by a fringed umbrella. Islander wannabees are dressed for party success in hearty Hawaiian shirts, sarongs and muumuus. They sit Japanese restaurant style on white-piped canvas cushions around a blanket. Some of the guests sport festive straw [...]

Ok, it wasn't Citizen Kane or Battleship Potemkin but the feature film entitled simply Star Trek proved an unexpectedly pleasurable treat at Gloucester's impressive Guildhall Arts Centre last evening. It was one of those prequel things and not, I venture, based on a true story. The grateful audience learned how the youthful Kirk, Spock, Bones, Uhuru and the rest of the merry company came to work together on the good ship Enterprise. This aspect of the film was rather charming and worked well; the actors (including local hero Simon Pegg portraying Scotty with élan and vigour) developed their [...]
The big news out of the NBA isn't that Ron Artest is changing his last name to "mohawk." Rather, it's that standout Houston Rocket center Yao Ming may miss all of next season , and perhaps never play again. It seems that Yao Ming has temperamental bones, which immediately eliminates him from the porn industry after his playing days. Is there anything more fragile than Yao's feet? MR. GLASS I think this is a given. Samuel L. Jackson was supposed to be so soft [...]

Every one of Stalin's houses had its own private cinema, and in his last years, the cinema became not only his favourite entertainment but also a source of political inspiration. It was one of the venues from which he ruled the Soviet Empire: this was cinematocracy - rule by cinema. Stalin loved movies, but he was much more than a movie-buff. The new Communist Party archives in Moscow, and the recently opened personal papers of Stalin, reveal that he fancied himself a super-movie-producer/director/ screenwriter as well as supreme censor, suggesting titles, ideas and stories, working on scripts and [...]

You probably already know this, but nearly two weeks ago Kung Fu and Kill Bill star David Carradine (may have) died from "suffocation as a result of self-bondage masturbation" according to forensics scientists. F*cking badass. It's like how Royal Tenenbaum's headstone reads "Died tragically rescuing his family from the remains of a destroyed sinking battleship" at the end of the movie, except it's David Carradine while trying to PLEASURE HIMSELF. Jesus Christ, this is awesome. Is there any better way to go out of this world than while trying to give yourself an orgasm? [...]
John Stamos wants to make a movie out of "Full House." The 80s' family sitcom that brought him to fame and created a staple of that era. Not sure on what form the moviewill take or if syndicated 80s' comedy will work now, but I welcome it because, like Calvin Harris, "I got love for you if you were born in the 80s'." The news from TVSquad.com: "John Stamos wants to make a movie out of Full House . Not since the talk of adapting Hello, Larry has a rumor caused such an enthusiastic uproar. [...]

Well, it's Friday and you know what that means. Yes, my Oriental fille de nuit manual catharsis manager Fah Lo Suee and I will be travelling to...well, at this point, I was going to insert the traditional sort of lame topical political gag, in this case about the nomination of Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court, but to be honest the naked racism and misogyny being spewed by the Limbaugh wing of the Republican party in the last few days has been so utterly loathsome that my heart's just not in it. [...]

Etan Cohen (Tropic Thunder, Madagascar 2) has reportedly been tapped to write and Kevin Lima (Enchanted) to direct Universal Pictures' live-action film Candy Land, based on the Hasbro board game. Universal Pictures and Hasbro formed a six-year strategic partnership in February 2008 to produce at least four feature films based on some of Hasbro's toy brands including Monopoly , Candy Land, Clue, Ouija, Battleship , Magic: the Gathering, and Stretch Armstrong . The deal also stated that the first film would be released in 2010 or 2011, and Universal will release at least one film [...]
