There was an absolutely bonkers story in the New York Times this weekend about how there's been a rash of karaoke murders involving Frank Sinatra's "My Way" in the Philippines. Apparently, if you get up and sing it in a Philippine bar, your liable to get your face stomped in, shanked, or at worst, buried. Seriously. The story is about how people who do karaoke in the Philippines have stopped doing "My Way," even though that's the song they'd all like to sing. But they don't out of fear of making someone mad enough to kill them. The craziest part [...]

Revenge of the Nerds With Chiptunes In high school, most students belonged to a group defined by a common interest and attitude. There were the jocks, the rich kids, the pretty girls, the musicians and the nerds. The jocks always dated the pretty girls, while the musicians were popular with everyone. The nerds, on the other hand, with their chess club and computer games, were outcasts. But it seems that the tables have turned and now being a nerd is cool. Nerd culture has taken off all over the world, including here in Indonesia. [...]
What's in a band name, and does it even matter so long as the music's good? Case and point, post-punk pseudo newbie's The Soft Pack . Formerly the Muslims (changed after some offensive remarks were made), the San Diego four piece adopted the name of their first effort (also titled The Soft Pack ), and put out their second full-length record. Like the tunes leading up to this, their self-titled debut as The Soft Pack is the kind of music that promotes lots of jumping around and the strong possibility for alcohol abuse around lots of people. The [...]

This boffin girl was allowed into the We Are Scientists 's secret backstage realm for an interview with the band shortly before they were due on stage at Washington's Black Cat last Thursday the 21st . In the first half of the interview, we talk about their new album, the reception of the new material, their foray into television, and more. Of course, wherever We Are Scientists find themselves, humour follows. Listen below to the audio of this portion of the interview, and the transcription is below and beyond the cut. [...]

Somewhat locals (hey, it's Bloomington, IN) and one of my favourite bands Murder By Death announced today on their Facebook page that they have a new album coming out on April 6. It will be titled Good Morning, Magpie and I am extremely excited for it. Check out the video below that from the show they did at Uncle Pleasant's on election night from 2008. Twas one of the best shows of 2008. From their Facebook page: Hey [...]
"Romance Is Boring," the title track from Los Campesinos! excellent upcoming third album, is one of the most direct songs the band has ever written; it's got a straight forward structure, and the chorus is festival-ready. The just released video for the song is equally direct, but with considerably more baseball bat beatings. Probably like 100% more baseball beatings. And 135% more kids dressed as luchadores. Romance Is Boring is due out on Jan. 26 via Arts & Crafts. [ P4K ]

British band uses American Country/Rock influences to create a soundtrack for beatings and bleatings.

We went to see " The Boys are Back " over the weekend. It wasn't a film that either of us wanted to see, in particular, but we had a babysitter and an itch to spend some time in the cinema and it was either that, "Avatar" or a legion of other anodyne Hollywood swill. I'm not sure that I'm glad we did. It's not that it is a bad movie, it was very nicely done. Directed by Scott Hicks (" Shine "), and set in South Australia, it is the story of a single father ( Clive Owen [...]
A thorough document of the greatest moments of one of the greatest musicians of the 20th century. By the time Fela Ransome-Kuti changed his name to Anikulapo -- "he who carries death in his pouch" -- he had already built a fence around his house in Nigeria and declared it an independent state: The Kalakuta Republic. His records began to sell in the millions throughout Africa and the colonial government of Nigeria played an incessant cat and mouse game with Kuti for the rest of his career: arrests, beatings, and imprisonment were...
A minor controversy has broken out in the gossip rags recently over Beyonce allegedly taking $2 million in cash from one of Mummar Qaddaffi's kids (who is known colloquially as Hannibal, because he is a nice guy*) to perform in St. Barts at Nikki Beach for the likes of Paul Allen and Lindsay Lohan at an exclusive party. Beyonce performed a whole five songs for her $2 million, which is an hourly rate of about $6 million. Now, this is the part where I talk about how it's "deplorable" that Beyonce would [...]

rslblog.com's Record Label of the Year Midriff's got the Stuff You Need to Hear AWARD WINNER - Already responsible for a back-catalog of albums savvy enough to make most upstarts proud, Midriff Records (Boston/NY) was far from resting on its laurels. That much became quite clear to all of us as we headed down the final stretch of 2009. Having repeatedly celebrating Midriff's releases, it became clear that 3 of my top 10 albums of the year came from [...]
