So I'm trying something different right now. I'm going to link to 10 blogposts that I think are particularly good. I'm going to ask you, my readers, to thumb-up or digg or whatever both this post and some of the ones I linked to, if you like them. Then, I'm going to ask the owners of those blogs that I link to to make their own posts, linking to me and to some posts that they like . Then ask their readers/bloggers to do the same. None of those bloggers know I [...]
I only met Mark Mulcahy once. It was on the night that Mark and Ken played the North Star with The Mountain Goats who were on tour with Bowerbirds. This is the first night that I was lucky enough to have met my friend Ken Maiuri (an amazing musician and person, bar none , as they say). This was also the night that I received the most amazing hug in the World from John Darnielle, who come to think of it: should go down in history as a man with a Gift of Hug. It was a magical night. In the UK we had Bratpop , Stateside they had 'Sugar Metal', or at least they had Radish who coined the term to describe themselves. Fronted by a very young (15 I think) Ben Kweller . If you remember these guys it's probably from their Top-40 hit "Little Pink Stars". At the time I seem to remember Courtney Love proclaiming Ben to be the greatest thing since sliced bread, but then again she did used to do that with a lot of bands. Anyway, download the song as it's fucking quality. [...]
It's been almost three weeks since I got back from The Bridge School Benefit shows and if I postpone this post any longer, it may end up like my never posted Calgary Folk Fest '07 Part II (sigh). Quickly, Ben Folds with the Seattle Symphony was awesome as expected (from the 2nd row!), but The Very Best show in San Francisco was unceremoniously cancelled on the day of the show since Esau Mwamwaya had passport issues getting into the US... very disappointing. After the stage was blessed by native [...]

Maybe this is the easiest way to make sure your cash goes straight to the person who made it. ( Getty Images, Lew Robertson ) Last week, Eliot Van Buskirk, columnist and blogger at Wired and Jay Sweet, Paste magaznie's Editor At Large, got together in a chat room (so '90s!) to talk about paying for music now. After a technological stumble, involving the revelation of exactly 2 embarrassing AIM names, they proceeded to drop bombs on the majors ( They [...]

St. Louis' Grace Basement is led by multi-instrumentalist Kevin Buckley who has quite a knack for writing concise pop gems. It's pretty evident from the opening track "There He Goes" that the harmonies and chord minor changes are very infectious, and the addition of fiddle backing is an added bonus. The dance hall influenced melody of "Tilly Lingers" is another catchy gem along the lines of Harry Nilsson and XTC. Unlike the solo approach of the debut album New Sense , Buckley is assisted by guitarist Ben Phillips, bassist Mike Zapf and drummer Sean Price [...]

Darwin Deez is an NYC artist that's been getting a lot of buzz lately with his quirky brand of indie pop. I'm not encouraging you to judge people based on their looks, but if you tried to guess what Darwin Deez sounded like by looking at the above picture, you'd probably be pretty close. The vocals sound a little like Ben Kweller, the music includes guitars, electronic drums, and handclaps and the sound is both simple and highly entertaining. Check it out. "It feels like fifteen years ago," my Showing Going Friend Joe said. "It feels like fifteen years ago when I was back in San Francisco." Joe was talking about TAB the Band last Friday night at Middle East Down. Tab had Joe swooning in nostalgia an d memories of local California bands he'd rocked out to in the '90s with their '70s-inspired rock and roll (check out BBC's interview with them last week). This was a group of boys I could've sworn I'd heard on WOXY (but probably [...]
NPR's got a live stream with former Drive-by Trucker, Jason Isbell , playing the Mountain Stage with his solo band the 400 unit. Good stuff. Related posts: Jason Isbell @ Bowery Ballroom, NYC Ben Kweller On Mountain Stage - NPR Austin City Limits Festival Live Stream on Hulu

If it's mid-October in New York City, then it's CMJ Music Marathon time... five days and nights of music, film, informative panels, and parties that guarantee a good time, if your idea of a good time involves nonstop live shows from up-and-coming musicians from a variety of genres. Thing is, since you're reading EAR FARM, we're going to go ahead and assume that CMJ 2009 is your idea of a good time. Ours too. And it just so turns out that fourteen of our previously featured Bands of the Week are playing the festival [...]
