Fairytales from the Island is the new album from Montreal band Intensive Care. The album, produced by Jace Lasek (Stars, Besnard Lakes, Sunset Rubdown), is the kind of atmospheric indie pop you'd expect to hear coming out of that city. The band is working it's way across southern Ontario this week, spreading the joy and culminating in a big Toronto show. Check them out on one of these dates:

Few rooms offer what Bowery does in terms of acoustics; dial your levels right onstage and the Ballroom's soundsystem and resonant effects will do the rest. With Cass McCombs's fourth LP, the endlessly repeatable Catacombs , the traveling troubadour has never been quite so forthright with his lyrical content: he's singing about what's on his mind, and what's on his mind is mostly what's in his heart. So Bowery was the right room for this late-support show of his latest LP, where the bed of Korg keys and gently swelling pedal steel guitars could color, but never color over, [...]

Mew Beach The vocals and even some of the guitar work are immediately reminiscent of Built to Spill, but nope, this is Mew , a prog-tinged band from Copenhagen, Denmark that flew under my radar until I, by chance, accidentally downloaded it. Now I'm sure that Olga and Jace of the Besnard Lakes either love or loathe this band and have already done the requisite apostle/apostate work on 'em, but sadly, my musical knowledge can be [...]
Thoughts of penmanship tire me (yup, too many drinks last night), thus I will seize this warm, bright afternoon, defy my lazy inclinations, and break out for a short hike. My soundtrack: Land of Talk's 2008 album, Some Are Lakes , plus their new EP, Fun and Laughter. Yep, it's all in happy preparation for Land of Talk's performance tomorrow night in San Francisco. I discovered the band after witnessing the band's vocalist/guitarist, Elizabeth Powell, perform with Broken Social Scene [...]

I'd like to think that I'm on top of my album release schedule, especially when a group like Young Galaxy drops its sophomore album. Well, Invisible Republic came out in August via Fontana North and I didn't get the memo . If you want the album then be ready to pay the hefty import price. But if you liked anything about their debut then it's worth every cent. "Oh Sister" expands upon the dreamy pop material with stronger arrangements [...]

The Besnard Lakes rolled into the Mercury Lounge on a warm October night and seemed like they were on a mission. Down to a four piece band, with the addition of two laptops (a subject of a few jokes Jace Lasek made - "excuse me while I check my emails," etc.) they stormed through an epic, swirling, and utterly captivating set. Two guitars, a huge array of effect pedals, bass, flute, and the aforementioned computers on stage created a dizzyingly layered bed of sound for the back-and-forth vocals of the husband and wife team Jace Lasek and [...]

Those of us who turned out to see The Besnard Lakes last night at TT the Bear's Place in Boston got some cool surprises: the debut of some new material, plus a few tantalizing details about the long-awaited follow-up to their 2007 stunner The Besnard Lakes Are the Dark Horse . Featuring a stripped-down four-person lineup—and, sadly, minus their usual smoke machine—the Besnards seemed a little tentative at first, with bassist/vocalist Olga Goreas confessing: "We haven't done this in a while." Even so, it didn't take long for the band to showcase gorgeous blended vocals, shoegazing guitars, [...]

Recommended Show: SATURDAY, OCTOBER 3, 2009 CORN MO @ BRUAR FALLS 245 Grand Street Brooklyn, NY 11211 $6, 8PM Corn Mo is listed as a "special guest" on this show. Who knows what that means? To be honest, I'm not exactly sure, but considering Corn Mo has been performing mostly with his band, .357 Lover, these days, it could be a rare solo treat. Oh course, he could just be the MC; however, The Choke are headlining the bill, and that's also something to look forward to. Lonnie Walker @ Pianos [...]

Wow, it's already October. I guess time flies when you're having fun or something like that. On Friday I'm torn about the Dinosaur Jr show at the Middle East for a little Pioneer Valley rock or Jay Retard at Harpers or Jetset and Highland Moore at the Plough, too many choices. Saturday has another good night of music with Ra Ra Riot at the Paradise (I love their Rhumb Line cd but have never seen them live yet), a great local line up at TTs with Sidewalk Driver, The Motion Sick, Aloud and John Powhida's International Airport and yet another [...]

He also has a "percussion" CD. I guess. I have no idea what's going on at Weirdo, but it'll probably be awesome. Andrew W. K. via by drivenbyboredom Tuesday, [...]
This is one of those weekends that I've been looking forward to for a long time and if you have too then yay! It's here. On Thursday, there's free ice cream at Coldstone Creamery which is a good start to any weekend. Also on Thursday, there are good choices for music for exotica/tiki music there's Waitiki at Ryles, there's Moby at the House of Blues, there's Poi Dog Pondering at the Regatta Bar, there's Elizabeth and the Catapult at TTs and Three Day Threshold at Toad. The Friday show that I'm really looking forward to is a big one at [...]
