Darwin Deeez dancing! Bishop Allen, not dancing. I have not been to a concert in Austin since I headed to Baltimore for my higher education. So when I heard Bishop Allen, one of my favorite bands in high school, was playing Mohawk, one of my favorite venues, on Friday night, I went and got a ticket. My friend and [...]

The atmosphere couldn't have been less ideal. On Tuesday night, after a last minute venue change, Bishop Allen played to a small crowd at the Echoplex. The cavernous room was only about a quarter full. But that didn't stop the Brooklyn quartet from putting on a fine performance.

New York Magazine recently featured 40 bands that "defined" the Brooklyn sound which includes MGMT, Grizzly Bear and Dirty Projectors as the TOP 3. The entire list is as following: 40 Light Asylum - "Angel Tongue" 39 Oakley Hall - "All the Way Down" 38 Here We Go Magic - "Fangela" 37 Apache Beat - "Tropics" 36 Bishop Allen - "Click, Click, Click, Click" 35 White Rabbits - "Percussion Gun" 34 Japanther - "Challenge" 33 Class Actress - "All The Saints" 32 Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson - "The Debtor" 31 Ninjasonik - "Art [...]

I Guess I'm Floating and Hot Brown Mess are bringing to town a fantastic show with the Evangelicals and the Holiday Shores . The Evangelicals are a highly touted band from Norman, Oklahoma (home of The Flaming Lips) and they have been making major waves since their debut album, So Gone in 2006. I had a chance to talk with front-man Josh Jones today and, even after the greater success of their 2008 sophomore album, The Evening [...]
Last year, the Chicago based music venue as Schubas brought the likes of Cursive, Department of Eagles, Bishop Allen, and Bear Hands for its annual five-day winter celebration/music festival, Tomorrow Never Knows . We were there and wrote a lot about it . Anyhow, for its 2010 edition, Schubas, now with their new venue, Lincoln Hall, available to provide some extra space, has taken TNK up a notch. After all, include to take part in this year's festivities, which takes place from January 13-17 at both Schubas and Lincoln Hall, are The Cribs, Voxtrot, Final Fantasy, [...]

Pat Graham Yeah, I know that I probably keep closer track of British bands than some (but certainly not as much as others), but I still get confused as to who's who sometimes. Particularly when it comes to outfits comprised of skinny, shaggy-looking lads wielding guitars and perhaps scowls, and whose names are some combination of the definite article and a random noun, sometimes pluralized. The Rifles ? They're the ones who're trying to channel The Jam (and doing a pretty good job of it). The Rakes ? They're [...]

Friday is another one of those rare (or not so rare) days in Austin that comes around every once and a while that blows the minds of us music types. The day is so jammed full of music goodness that we are dedicating a whole post just to Friday's shows. Which one are you headed to? The Parish : Elvis Perkins & A. A. Bondy @ 8pm for $14 . Mohawk : Bishop Allen and Darwin [...]

Donnybrook reviewed films playing the Starz Denver Film Festival this week on a 100 star system. Why? Because our opinion counts 20 times more than most peoples'. Our panel learned many lessons, one of them being: don't let Adam Scott near your girlfriend, especially if Adam Scott happens to be YOUR BROTHER. Couple of cool live shows in Phoenix tonight: Two Brooklyn, NY bands - Bishop Allen and Darwin Deez - are touring together and show up tonight at Modified Arts. Local electronica outfit Futurekind kicks things off. Love the clean clear pop of Bishop Allen's "The Ancient Commonsense of Things - hear it at their MySpace page. And Darwin's Deez's 'Constellation' is groovy as a childhood lullaby for hipster kids. Read more about Bishop Allen at Brooklyn Vegan , arbiter of all great things musical NYC. - UK [...]

Toronto - If there's ever been a neighborhood that has risen to prominence in the past few years, it's definitely Brooklyn. I guess in actuality, they are a city. Anyways, it's quite impossible to deny that Brooklyn has produced some of the best music in the past few years and I guess finally some media has noticed. Check out NY Mags top 40 songs that define Brooklyn. 40 Light Asylum - "Angel Tongue" 39 Oakley Hall - "All the Way Down" 38 Here We Go Magic - "Fangela" 37 Apache Beat - "Tropics" [...]
This made me chuckle because, yes, I'm old enough to remember plying my horrible white-boy dance moves in front of a black-and-white television set. It's the video for Bishop Allen's "True or False" (directed by Randy Bell, choreographed by Andrea Delmonico), off the Brooklyn indie-pop ensemble's new album "Grrr..." (out on Dead Oceans). I'm pretty sure they'll be playing in living color when their tour hits L.A. tonight. ||| Live: Bishop Allen performs tonight at the Echoplex, with Throw Me the Statue opening. [...]

It's a busy night in Echo Park — local experimental noisemakers 60 Watt Kid celebrate the release of their new album "We Come From the Bright Side" upstairs at the Echo, while Bishop Allen and Throw Me the Statue play downstairs at the Echoplex in a show that was moved from the El Rey Theatre. (Enter through the Echo for both shows.) ...
