I hate that people expect a person to stay classy after a break up. Fuck that, I was never like that and I'm not going to act like it now. I'm immature and a mess if you didn't know already and... Well, just let my sistas tell it... I went there: MP3: KEEPIN' IT DESPERATE MIX (101 MB) 1. Calvin Harris - Can't Get Alone (Dirty South Bootleg) [...]

In the Book Notes series, authors create and discuss a music playlist that relates in some way to their recently published book. Joshua Gaylord's debut novel, Hummingbirds , caused Kirkus reviews to call him "an impressive new voice in American fiction," and I have to agree. Gaylord eloquently paints the relationships and interactions of his characters, both adult and teen, male and female, with rare and impressive insight into human character in this compelling story of an all-girls high school.. Library Journal wrote of the book: [...]

Artwork by Shepard Fairy 45 years ago, Johnny Cash released his most controversial album Bitter Tears , a dive into Native American history inspired by both the possibility of his own Cherokee heritage and his advocacy of Native American rights. On top of its political implication, the album is known to have influenced Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen. Tomorrow at the Makeout Room (7pm, $8 presale tickets ) will be an evening in celebration of Antonino D'Ambrosio's newest work and the previously untold story, A Heartbeat and a Guitar: Johnny Cash and [...]

----------------------------- #1 words: Jamie Milton Antony And The Johnsons - Hope There's Someone The emotional has triumphed in MFM's top 10 songs of the decade. Without passion of fuel for thought, without uncontrollable frustration or in this case, unrivaled loneliness and doubt, there's not a hope in hell of reaching the top spot. Antony Hegarty [...]

Illustration by Torgeir Husevaag [ Prime Numbers ] ( buy CD ) ( buy mp3s ) Prime Numbers has surfaced from the wading pool of deep house labels at a remarkable rate. Considering the apparent nonchalance of Prime No. 1 David Wolstencroft (best known as Trus'me), the consistency and quality of PN's catalog is almost surprising. Developing an identifiable sound around a close-knit and capable collection of producers in just a few years requires equal amounts of luck, astute determination, and [...]

Filed under: News , New Music , Exclusive In 10 years as a band, Lucero have never made a video. But, as the Memphis juke-joint rockers launch their major label debut, '1372 Overton Park,' the band is now playing with the big boys. Rather than hire a supermodel and a stylist though, the first video for the R&B-tinged record is a fan-made clip for the tears-in-my-beer ballad, 'Darken My Door.' The humorous and exceptionally well-made video depicts a straggly-haired puppet taking the role of singer Ben Nichols' bitter, heartbroken [...]

This was going to be a different kind of post. I was going to write about how, come the middle of August every year when I was in elementary school, I got bored. How at some point during the dog days, summer ground to a halt and I got excited about going back to school. It wasn't that I particularly liked school, just that I craved routine and the freedom and idleness of summer vacation started to wear thin. I was going to tell you that after two weeks off for paternity leave/spring break, I was ready to [...]

Brazil. Samba. Samba before Bossa. Samba. After Bossa, Samba. Always Samba. More of us have heard Bossa Nova more than Samba, especially if we listen to jazz, but the "new beat" was based on a version of the eternal beat. Samba. Brazil's heartbeat, fueling the people's musical soul. Samba is music when Brazilians have nothing else. Samba is everything to people with little or nothing else. On the hillsides down to the seashore. Samba. In Rio the Samba schools are the community glue, the net that every musician sooner or later [...]

When we looked at Pitchfork's 20 Greatest Songs Of The '00s , we also went through the entire list and found the 15 songs they included from 2009, noting that Animal Collective was far and away the the highest placer from our current 12 months. A great song doesn't always equal a great album, but in this case, it worked out for Avey Tare, Panda Bear, and Geologist: Merriweather Post Pavillion did very well in Pitchfork's 20 Greatest Albums Of The '00s, too. (Actually, A.C. and A.C.-related projects placed multiple times across the Top 200 list -- [...]
Keeping with the theme of the last post, tonight's tune is another number that was performed at this year's Polaris Music Prize gala; The Toronto alt-country act Elliot Brood enlisted the audience's help on percussion, resulting in a performance that was hard not to enjoy. Write it All Down for You can be found on the band's second full-length album Mountain Meadows , released in June of 2008. On top of the Polaris short-listing, the album was also Juno nominated for "Roots & Traditional Album Of The Year: Group" and "Juno Award for [...]

Don't the dragonflies look like they're flying in space? I made scrambled eggs. With onions. A couple slices of Spanish bread. I ate this, while I read your description of clouds. Volcanos, whale rider. This came through yours. And I read Leonard Cohen's Days of Kindness again. I was seventeen the last time I longed to read this. I don't know why I decided to go back to it now. Maybe it was my departure from the usual cereal and blueberries. This is a good [...]

I'm sure you guys all want the best new dance music out today, but I've decided to post basically the only three Indie Rock album that I always come back to after a sea of EDM. Though, and I know some people find this amazing, I can fall asleep to blasting electro beats. It's nice to chill out sometimes for a minute and remember the times that I had with these albums. They're pretty popular, so don't expect anything like hugely alt, but there may be some people out there who might not have had them or didn't give them [...]

Joe Michelini of River City Extension 07.19.09 @ M Room Philadelphia Back in July, Joe Michelini of River City Extension played and amazing solo set at our Bag Of Songs night at The M Room. This week I caught up with Joe via email to ask a few questions in advance of River City Extension heading to Philadlephia next Monday night September 7th for what's sure to be an outstanding show at The Fire. BOS: What inspired you to start the band? JM : [...]

Schizophrenic is one way to describe the second day of this year's Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival . Imagine, just for a moment, that the music business is divided into two sides: mainstream and indie-rock. For every big shot act sitting on top, there's the smaller breed, gaining momentum and working its way up the proverbial "musical ladder", which means jackshit in today's day and age. Keeping this in mind, however, organizers behind the festival, let's say Superfly, got their jollies off with day two. On one side of the park, the Lands End Stage, a [...]

In the Book Notes series, authors create and discuss a music playlist that relates in some way to their recently published book. Jonathan Tropper's novel This Is Where I Leave You is a comic masterpiece. A dysfunctional family comes together to sit Shiva for their patriarch, and Tropper's insightful pen draws them with an impressive degree of humanity and pathos. This masterful blend of comedy and tragedy is one of my favorite novels of the year, a book I cannot stop myself from constantly recommending. In his own [...]
Here's another thing I wrote from the Pop Music class, though this was for the final project. We needed to choose our favorite album of all-time and writing about its importance/what makes it interesting/ etc. Naturally I chose the Magnetic Fields.... 69 Love Songs The Magnetic Field's 69 Love Songs is a three- volume concept album, released by Merge Records on September 7, 1999. The three volumes compile the tracks in a loosely thematic way: Volume 1 being the "Pop Album," Volume 2 the "Ballad Album," and Volume 3 the "Comedy Album." [...]
