Summer Camp Additions: Pretty Lights, Mule & More

Over the past few days Summer Camp Music Festival organizers have been "leaking" additions to their lineup via Twitter and Facebook. Now that the leaks are concluded we know that 20 bands in total were added including Gov't Mule, Pretty Lights, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Keller Williams and G. Love and Special Sauce. Also of note, Gigantic Underground Conspiracy featuring members of Big Gigantic, the Disco Biscuits and Conspirator will make an appearance at the fest. Silver Apples l'interview

Bloggy Goodness: Bluegrass Underground

Bloggy Goodness: Bluegrass Underground With most of the HT Staff being based in the Northeast we have often gushed about the amazing experience of attending a Midnight Ramble at Levon Helm's barn. Well we're not the only part of the country that has a special spot to attend a concert, as those in and around McMinnville, Tennessee can justly boast about the awesomeness of Bluegrass Underground , a regular series of concerts that take place at the Volcano Room in Cumberland Caverns. The shows, which take place in a cave 333 feet below ground, have featured a mix of contemporary and legendary performers, from Ralph Stanley [...]

[CMJ 2011 Recap] Elizabeth gets rewired with Cities Aviv, Datarock, Blonde Summer and more

[CMJ 2011 Recap] Elizabeth gets rewired with Cities Aviv, Datarock, Blonde Summer and more New York City is pretty much already the definition of sensory overload, all by itself, on a random Tuesday, in the middle of nothing, when half of the city calls in sick. So when it's time for the annual cluster-you-know-what known as the CMJ Music Marathon ? If I were Johnny-Five , my circuits would have shorted. Lucky for you, I just eeked by in the "living to tell about it" category, so I here I am, living. And telling you about it! In no particular order, I present to you: my favorite finds from CMJ [...]

The Draw Us Lines College Primer: Venues

The Draw Us Lines College Primer: Venues Hey. How's it going? Good, great. So, yeah, you might be new here. Maybe you're a freshman at Pitt or CMU or somewhere else. That's terrific and we applaud your good choice in city. But maybe you're not exactly new here, and you're finding yourself ready to explore the town and uncover it's wonders. You're like a goddamn pearl diver, ready to take the plunge and come up for air with a little bit of treasure. Well, we're here to help you with that whole situation. It could definitely seem like a staggering endeavor. We understand. We went through it [...]

Trail-Blazing Bear Inspired the Dead

The late "Bear" Stanley was a hugely influential figure in the development of sound engineering and in the evolution of the Grateful Dead. Tony Hillier, one of only a handful of journalists to be granted an interview with him, explains why … Owsley Stanley III, born in 1935 into a well-connected Kentucky family, died in tropical far north Queensland, Australia in mid-March this year, after a fatal car accident. "Bear", as he was popularly known, was a messianic figure, the so-called "Acid King" or "White Rabbit" whose LSD tabs fueled San Francisco's flower power counter culture and helped [...]

Saying Goodbye to Sprout, Grandpa Eddie's and The Hospital

Saying Goodbye to Sprout, Grandpa Eddie's and The Hospital Photo: Jens Kofoed-Pihl In less than a week, three of RVA's music venues have been shut down. Earlier this week, Grandpa Eddie's closed its doors suddenly and without warning . Grandpa Eddie's hosted many country, bluegrass and cover bands and was a nice spot to see live music in the West End - which are hard to come by out in the suburbs. On top of that, local underground venue The Hospital had its location revealed to the public and apparently was raided by police. The Hospital's actual location was never [...]

Haldern Pop 2011: Thursday: Anna Calvi /Avett Brothers / Julia Marcell/ Yuck

Haldern Pop 2011: Thursday: Anna Calvi /Avett Brothers / Julia Marcell/ Yuck Anna Calvi Sitting round the backstage campfire listening to La Brass Banda's tuba player running through a melancholy passage from Bach, we reflected on a Haldern that had an element of Sehnsucht as well as the usual industrial-strength dollops of hippy dippy Zuckerzeit . Maybe it was the weather, (glowering, leaden, ever-threatening), maybe it was the zealous and clearly alien security measures brought in, we believe, as a national response to the tragedy [...]

Rappers I Once Swore By, Part Two

Rappers I Once Swore By, Part Two David D. has made some horrible decisions in his young life, not the least of which has been my choice in Hip-Hop albums and artists to follow. Earlier this year, I highlighted some of these questionable decisions ( "10 Rappers I Once Swore By" ), but, unfortunately, those weren't my only missteps. Here are a few more rappers I swore by, further discrediting me from ever having a valid music opinion again. Enjoy while I watch my career slowly careen around the inside of the toilet bowl. [...]

Hyde & Beast – Slow Down

Hyde & Beast – Slow Down Hyde & Beast is the sound of David Hyde from The Futureheads and Neil Bassett from Golden Virgins indulging themselves in a bit of nostalgia. 'Slow Down' was apparently influenced by their love of late 60s and early 70s rock, and the press release mentions Velvet Underground and T Rex. Quite where these art/glam influences appear on the album is not clear, as this is simply 11 tracks of innocuous country-edged blues. Opener 'Never Come Back' sets the tone of the album – simultaneously jaunty and morose with an economical approach to vocals, which means you don't have [...]

The State of Folk: Falcon Ridge 2011 Festival Roundup (covers of Jack Hardy, Adele, The Beatles, Bill Morrissey & more!)

The State of Folk: Falcon Ridge 2011 Festival Roundup (covers of Jack Hardy, Adele, The Beatles, Bill Morrissey & more!) Two years ago, my annual visit to the folkfields produced a manifesto of sorts, anticipating and acknowledging the blur between old time, bluegrass, folk, and other american roots forms being performed by a rising crop of very young artists. Much of this came from the dual nature of my summer revelry: moving from Grey Fox Bluegrass to Falcon Ridge Folk allowed for a surprisingly consistent journey, and that which I saw in one site, I confirmed in the other. This year, though work and other obligations left me unable to attend Grey Fox, I [...]

Chad VanGaalen – Interview

Chad VanGaalen – Interview Chad VanGaalen is sitting on his balcony with his ukulele, the Rocky Mountains in front of him. Bowlegs is trying to turn this picture into a question about Canadian music, while Chad seems to be more worried about Bowlegs, hunched over a mobile and a dictaphone. "What view you got?" he asks. "Some nice concrete? Some dry-wall?" Well, yes, Chad, to be honest. But enough trans-Atlantic politeness, let's imagine we're both on that balcony. How does he feel his brand of Canadian pop stands up to the pervasive culture of American music? Does he feel at any national [...]

THE BLUES iS NOT DEAD: The New Blues Underground Rises Up by Ted Drozdowski

THE BLUES iS NOT DEAD: The New Blues Underground Rises Up by Ted Drozdowski Via 1.27.2009 When music fans talk about underground sounds they're usually referring to indie rock, electronica, crunk or some other cutting edge form. But now blues has become a new force in the international music underground — deep, dirty, old-fashioned blues from the hills and Delta lands of Mississippi . But this blues has a new-fangled twist, incorporating influences of punk rock, [...]

The Long Ryders: Native Sons

The Long Ryders: Native Sons Long Ryders: Native Sons This expanded release of a record from 1984 isn't just an exercise in nostalgia. Not only does it contain some excellent music that doesn't sing out its age like a lot of that era's music does, it acknowledged its roots and set a standard for what followed. If you think of the mixture of country, folk and rock'n'roll that became known as Americana, The Long Ryders were laying the template [...]

Those Darlins / LIVE + Ticket Giveaway

Those Darlins / LIVE + Ticket Giveaway Those Darlins / Brillobox / 06.17.2011 / Doors 9:30 / $10 Words by Brendan Those Darlins seem like a barrel of fun. They have songs about drunkenly eating a whole chicken in one's kitchen, lover boys on the road, brotherly love with the opposite sex, protecting one's mama's reputation, keeping one's skillet good and greasy, and a snaggle tooth. And as much fun it has been to jam these tunes really loud in my apartment or on my ipod, it will be something else to [...]

Gig Review: Wide Days - Letters, PAWS, Rachel Sermanni, Withered Hand, Capitals, GoGoBot

Gig Review: Wide Days - Letters, PAWS, Rachel Sermanni, Withered Hand, Capitals, GoGoBot I never made it along to Wide Days the other week. However, Fraser Doig did, and kindly sent over his report on the showcase gigs that took place in the evening to share. You can find more of Fraser's writing here . In the wake of an informative, yet exhausting day at the seminar-laden Wide Days festival in Edinburgh, I donned my notebook and pen and set off into the throng, the smell of anticipation filling the air to the start of what promises to [...]
