Yo WRMC peoples. Today is Wednesday i.e. Hump Day so we figure you wouldn't mind learning about a new tune to carry you across the rest of your week. Today's tune is "Big Run" by Luke Lalonde (lead singer of the Born Ruffians ). This single was released as a part of the Canadian music project known as Novels in which 5 Canadian artists from 5 different Canadian bands (Born Ruffians, Tokyo Police Club, Will Currie and the Country French, Ex-Po, and Jay Sad) came together in [...]

Novels initially came together for a marathon jam session in January of 2009 where they wrote, recorded, and arranged an 5 song EP in one day. Since then, the "band" has [...]

If you're at all familiar with the sordid past of psych-rock pioneer Roky Erickson , than you know that it was only a few years ago that the possibility of ever seeing him perform live seemed about as likely as a warm winter in Toronto. His heavily permissive lifestyle back in the 60's while he was the leader of seminal psychsters the 13th Floor Elevators led to his being diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia in 1968, resulting in jailtime, electroshock therapy, and even a brief stint where he believed that aliens were coming to Earth to do him harm. It [...]

(photo: gianhand.ca) I don't know exactly how I feel about Giant Hand yet, but I've only given Coming Home a couple of listens so far, and at the very least, I'm compelled to write about the band, which is essentially Ottawa native Kirk Ramsay. In the span of about a year, Ramsay went from picking up a guitar for the first time, to opening for Immaculate Machine and Born Ruffians to a performance at Ottawa's Bluesfest to releasing a debut album that has many a people buzzing. So lately I've really been into Indie/Rock sounding bands and have come to realize that most people I know have never heard of my favorites. So I'm going to share: 1. The Script - They're a pop-rock band from Dublin, Ireland. Some easy listening, and pretty catchy. Check out the video for their single and one of my favorite songs, "The Man Who Can't Be Moved" on youtube . My other favorites from their self- titled album are 02-before-the-worst and 09-if-you-see-kay . [...]
Canadian Indie three piece Born Ruffians are putting the final touches to the untitled follow up to their 2nd album today. The record company haven't set a release date yet but it wont be surfacing anytime this year. But I'd expect to see a single soon enough. The band posted the following on their twitter "recording/mixing is done I guess that means we're hitting the road. Where should we go? Let's hear it.". So if you'd like to see them somewhere near you, let them know. "Red, Yellow and Blue" was released on Warp records and was one [...]

Check out the TV spot for the movie The Invention Of Lying starring Ricky Gervais. Born Ruffian 's have their song 'Hummingbird' starting off the clip, with ELO 's Mr. Blue Sky finishing the spot. .
Pop Montreal begins this week and I will be heading to Montreal, for a couple of days at least. As for shows I am going to see, I have no idea. Typically my festival strategy is to pick a venue where one or two good acts are playing, and stay there for the night. However, the schedule on the Pop Montreal website is organized by TIME and not by VENUE, which means my methodology is screwed. Since I am not familiar with Montreal and the different clubs, I am counting on there being a [...]

While rare shows are a dime a dozen at ATP, Caribou's Vibration Ensemble , which debuted at ATPNY earlier this month, was a particularly notable highlight of the weekend. Dan Snaith's newly formed orchestra, which included members of Enon, Junior Boys, Born Ruffians, Kieren Hebden of Four Tet, and Marshall Allen of the Sun Ra Arkestra, amongst many others, was utterly majestic if not completely mesmerizing. Fortunately for those looking to relive the experience, the fine folks at WFMU , who were broadcasting live from ATP, and their friends at the Free Music Archive have made [...]
