Download Here 1. Brakes - Porcupine Or Pineapple ( Fat Cat ) I must admit I'm quite into Brakes at the moment. This track somes from the Brighton band's new live album "Rock Id Dodelijk" which was recorded between two shows, Brighton August 2008) and Cologne (May 2009) and, it has to be said sounds pretty damn fantastic. [...]
This past Monday the 9th marked the release of a double A sided-single by Brighton band Brakes . So it being Friday and the start to a stellar weekend, we are gifting you with videos of both singles. In 'Why Tell the Truth (When It's Easier to Lie)', frontman Eamon Hamilton stars as a hapless victim of the credit crunch, and then a greedy capitalist on Wall Street. Hamilton must be good at multi-tasking, as the band's new record label Fat Cat Records reports that he directed [...]

I was about to say that I don't even remember anything about 2003, but I think I blocked it out. My one image of that year is breaking the phone in absolute frustration and anxiety. So dramatique. But about the music, 2003 was a great year: I was passionately obsessed with every song below, all of them. More than any other year in the 00s. The top three are, by the way, truly the top three songs. XO's Favorite Songs of 2003 Turin Brakes [...]
The song is from the band's excellent 2009 release, Touchdown , which you should really buy right now if you don't have it yet. Thanks to @wordtravelsfast for the head's up!

Well, it's not really me doing the soliciting, I'm just asking for a friend. Really I am! What? You don't believe me? Oh shush! Here, I've copied Tim's email request exactly: "November is almost upon us again, so it's time to think about the Contrast Podcast Festive 50. This year it will be on episodes 194, 195 & 196 from the 15th to the 29th of December. So here is what I need you, your friends, the readers of your blog, your milkman and anyone else you know to do: 1. [...]
Enjoy 'Worry...' below. Read my review of Brakes @ NYC's Bowery here. MP3: Brakes - Crystal Tunings

Download Here 1. Surfer Blood - Floating Vibes ( Kanine ) This track comes from the debut album from Surfer Blood who I assume are a bunch of students from Florida judging by the fact that the album was recorded in their University Of Florida dorm room. Thinking about it quite a few classic debut albums have been recorded in cheap places for not [...]
WE WERE PROMISED JETPACKS We cover two gigs today that show off one established act and a band who find themselves at a rather more humble beginning. It's fair to say that this Scottish four piece pack no lesser punch however. We adore them, having previously covered them here and here . If you could bottle the energy and power that this young band play with then you would out-sell Coca Cola. With drums and guitars that sound as if they're being played by Thor himself and their ability to pen [...]
Currently ensconced in a French recording studio with long-time musical collaborator David Odlum, Tipperary singer-songwriter Gemma Hayes will return to play an intimate acoustic show in Crawdaddy on December 4th. The performance will feature songs from the Meteor Award winner's forthcoming fourth album, which is due in the new year. Support on the night will come from Ann Scott . Tickets are available from Ticketmaster outlets nationwide, priced at €17 and €22.50. Related Cymbals Eat Guitars - Crawdaddy, Dublin [...]

South Carolina based roots rock band American Gun have a new album coming your way, Devil Showed Me His Hand the bands third full length (there is also a "demo" album - that you can get through eMusic ), the album will be available from December 1st and gets released in a collaboration with the Jangly Records collective and the bands own label [...]

Julie Doiron is one of the country's musical national treasures. Her unassuming demeanor, loveable cuteness, gorgeous voice, and ability to really rock out when called for are standouts of her live shows. Even more so is the fact that she makes each one feel unique in ways other performers are unable to match. Last Tuesday night's Toronto concert at Lee's Palace was no different. It was, to my mind, also one of the concerts of the year. The show opened with Doiron's friend, Shotgun Jimmie , but his 8:30pm slot was under-advertised, and [...]
The latest instalment in Microsoft's Forza franchise does pretty much what you'd expect a modern racer to do: delivers high octane thrills, with some cracking tracks and a host of the sweetest cars in the world. Forza 3 is bigger, better and more fun than ever before, regardless of whether you're a casual arcade racer or a serious simulation fan. That simple fact is what makes this one of the finest racing titles ever released. Thanks to a wealth of driving assist options, from automatic brakes to racing lines, computer driver skill to stability [...]

"When Charlie speaks of Lester, you know someone great has gone... The sweetest swingin´ music man, had a Porkie Pig hat on..." Here´s three versions of Goodbye Pork Pie Hat , the immortal ´59 tribute to recently deceased tenor great Lester ´Pres´ Young by ´angry man of jazz´ Charles Mingus. The bassist´s original, which became a jazz standard over the years, simply flows and flows. In ´68 British folk experimentalists Pentangle - featuring the dual guitar wizardry of Bert Jansch and John Renbourn - tackled [...]
They were the stand-out band for us at this year's End Of The Road Festival, and with the recent announcement of a live album and another U. K Tour, we can't help but be excited by this new video from the Brighton lads.
It has become gauche to hate on capitalism lately, which to me seems unfair. I mean, who's standing up for capitalism? Donald Trump? That dude's a tool. Everyone at Goldman Sachs? Those dudes are making so much money right now, they can afford to not care about people who hate capitalism (or human beings, for that matter). So it's not exactly a bold move for Brakes to go hard at capitalism in the video for "Why Tell the Truth (When It's Easier to Lie)," which features the first literal bull shitting money joke of [...]
Sufjan Stevens has apparently but the brakes on his ambitious (and kind of dumb, when you get down to it) 50 states project, instead promising that he'll be putting out a "song-based" LP in 2010. "I'm trying to dissuade any kind of conceptual framework and just write music, love songs, pop songs, and just forget all that conceptual mess..." So, like Seven Swans? Or like Illinoise , minus songs about John Wayne Gacy? We'll find out in 2010. [ Stereogum ]

CBW: Allez, présente-toi flux !

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars My affair with Tegan & Sara began when I first got my hand on the largely acoustic-based So Jealous . When they switched it up on The Con , I could sense a move in a new direction, and while I liked the album, it didn't seem like the girls had quite gotten to where they wanted to be. Now, with Sainthood , you can finally see the [...]

The Need for Speed series had some of the best arcade racing games out in its heyday. Then the franchise fell from grace with an annual slew of uninspired street racers. EA realized that something had to give when they put out Need for Speed: Shift its latest release. So while NFS Shift is a reboot, is it enough to revive the Need for Speed name to its former glory? Gone are the cop chases and illegal street races. The game leans towards the simulation side [...]
