I saw Brazos support the mighty White Denim last week. They eased us into the night nicely. The three-piece also come from Austin, Texas, but their sound however, is quite different to the Denim's. It's much softer, and less Hendrix, but their musical ability is definately on par. Their sound drifts between southern country music, through spanish guitar, between upbeat and melancholy, and wanders Grizzly Bear style through different arrangements. They've just released a wonderful album entitled 'Phosphorescent Blues'. It's a treat from start to end, you can almost feel the Texan sun stream onto your face when you listen [...]
Rolling into shows in full pre-game mode has its benefits, particularly when artists exceed lofty expectations and melt faces. Full disclosure, I'm not a big live review blogger, and toss the blue-ribbon to my colleagues Brian, Justin, and James in this arena. I'm much to erratic cognitively during live performances and my mind can just as easily wander as it can become rapt. I usually begin concerts in full journalist mode, jotting down tracklists and attempting to evaluate the entire scene throughout the night. This quickly digresses when alcohol's involved, and it fails doubly hard when the band I'm evaluating [...]
I am way behind on this post, so I'll keep it brief. Last Thursday's show at Music Hall of Williamsburg was very good. Brazos was an excellent opener. Nothing astounding, but extremely pleasant indie songs with inventive drumming and an impossible not to like leading man. White Denim played a frenetic, rousing set as always. This must be one of the most musically energetic bands in rock and roll right now. Switching from classic rock to funk to psychedelic to jazz, these guys must listen to so much music. This comes out in their amazing, endlessly quick tunes, if not [...]
Day Glo by Brazos . Indie Music Filter : Hey Tony, what do you think of ' Day Glo ' by Austin's Brazos ? Tony VonPervieux : Dude, really cool song. I dig the vibe especially. Feels like a nice montage moment song. It's like a beautiful slow moving train with the windows open to a world of amazing scenery, lush vivid landscapes. Makes me feel good. IMF : I dig it as well. Something about their sound that reminds me of Midlake , [...]
Back in August, I got a super exciting message from Mike Grimes over at the Basement - "you heard of White Denim ?" YES, I replied - because not only had I heard of White Denim, over the course of several trips to SXSW, they had become one of my recurring Texas favorites. From the first Wild Turkey-fueled St. Patrick's Day set I saw them play in 2007, I knew the Austin band was something special - they were like this three-piece ball of frenetic energy, teetering on a balance beam of awesomeness [...]
Guest writer and Senior White Denim Correspondent E-Rock has been kind enough to give us yet another White Denim concert review, this time at Washington, D. C.'s Rock & Roll Hotel . We've been on hiatus this week test driving cars and listening to snarky salesmen pitches. What I wanted was a sports car so rad it would magically melt the clothes off any hottie on the street. Alas, what I got was a whole lot different. W e ended up with an affordable and easy on the gas Kia Sportage. I will say for a factory job, the audio system is banging, equipped with Sirius sat radio, a USB connection, iPod/mp3 player jacks. It also comes with all [...]

Though Brazos singer/guitarist Martin Crane wrote the band's entire debut album Phosphorescent Blues over the compressed span of a single feverish week, it took several years for this Austin trio to actually release the damn thing. But at least the wait was worth it, as Blues (out yesterday and available HERE ) announces an irresistible collection of ten warmly shambolic tracks that burn a hole straight to your wistful nostalgia cortex (if there were such a thing) while you whistle along to the sneakily infectious and winding melodies. Brazos - [...]
Brazos Play the Phosphorescent Blues
When looking back to our high school days, many of us can likely remember reading Thoreau's Walden. Even those turned off by the primary philosophy of transcendentalism have grasped the value of such a classic, as Thoreau's isolated musings concerning self-sufficiency and civility seem even more relevant today in an age distancing itself from such [...]

Brazos :: Phosphorescent Blues
In regard to new releases, 2009 has undoubtedly been a strong year from not only from our stable of sacred cows, but also some exceptional works from emerging artists as well. With Phosphorescent Blues Austin's Brazos have entered the fray of the latter. Orchestral in its approach to accompaniment, many of the albums tracks bear [...]
