This garage foursome deliver an album that truly lives up to their up-from-the-bowels-of-hell name. And yes, that's a good thing. Most musicians take pride in getting better at playing their instruments, as if virtuosity was the whole point of making music. That's all well and good, but if that was the case Brain Salad Surgery would be hailed as the greatest accomplishment in rock and roll. Fortunately, the fellers in Brimstone Howl, after two solid slabs of garage goodness -- 2007's Guts of Steel and 2008's We Came In Peace -- realized they could keep...

Somewhere between the five full-length albums and a decade-long road test across the highways of the world, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club found their way. Eleven years after bassist Robert Levon Been and guitarist Peter Hayes started playing gigs around their hometown of San Francisco, the duo has now started over, with a new vision, a new drummer, and the gift of a future unknown. The sound of Beat The Devil's Tattoo comes from everywhere and nowhere- it draws a map and embarks on a sonic road trip through American music; from howling front porch stomps on [...]
Austin, Texas, trio Harlem follows up its 2008 Free Drugs debut with Hippies (Matador). The album, due April 6, was recorded with the assistance of Mike McHugh (Brimstone Howl, Jon Spencer, Andre Williams) at Costa Mesa, Calif.'s Distillery Studios. Download lead single "Friendly Ghost" (a jangly, dance-y, garage-pop number), and catch the band at New [...]

I really enjoyed Brimstone Howl's last LP. They called it We Came in Peace, the cover displayed a photo of the Earth taken from the surface of the moon. It's a record I take out to show people while I flick through for something to put on.

Brimstone Howl sounds like it holed up in a cave for a few years with nothing to eat but the Nuggets boxed sets. The Nebraska band's powerful spin on '60s garage/punk should tighten the pants of record collectors everywhere. The title for the group's latest album, Big Deal. What's He Done Lately? (Alive), is a [...]

As the year winds down, the number of new releases dwindles but reissues and box sets are definitely gaining momentum. A handful of box sets are the highlights of this week's music release list. Miles Davis: The Complete Columbia Album Collection 71-disc (70 CDs and 1 DVD) dwarfs even the recently released 16-disc Beatles Stereo Box Set . This collection combines 52 of Davis's albums (with bonus tracks) along with a 250-page booklet and a 1967 live DVD. Other box sets in [...]

Sacred Heart is comprised of members from a few different Scandinavian countries, and it seems their sound has the perfect blend of natural influences, one might expect from bands of the region, intermingling throughout. Minimalistic sections that explode into dense layers of sound; an organic, haunting, dark, and icy feel. The band's self-titled EP will be available through The Perfect Hoax Records very soon. Earlier this week we posted about the imminent new release from MM faves, the fuzzed out, machine gun rock'n'rollers Brimstone Howl. Their new album Big Deal. What's He Done Lately? is out next week and we've been listening pretty much non-stop since we got hold of a copy.We are delighted to report that we think it is their best yet, and frontman John Ziegler was good enough to answer a few
So the story goes, there is a well known Johnny Ramone quote about Phil Spector, "Big deal. What's he done lately?".And it is this that titles primeval garage rockers Brimstone Howl's new album. MM was a big fan of the previous effort We Came In Peace so we were delighted to hear that the new record will get its official release soon - in fact next week on the 24th.Apparently it is a more fuzzed

We have to admit, if it weren't for fact that the venue schedule was screwed up in a major way, like at least an hour behind, we would have missed Those Darlins perform at the Someday Lounge. We had arranged to see the Brimstone Howl perform but instead Those Darlins filled the time slot, but what a nice surprise INdeed!. Previewing the various bands before the show, we felt Those Darlins were a bit too country for our tastes. But we were dead wrong. In many cases, as we have found covering [...]
The Boys (one on top of the other) went parading through the crowd, rocking it up !! When the Brimstone Howl finally came on, (after Those Darlins) they had quite the act to follow. (We were enamored with Those Darlins ) but The Brimstone Howl's wasted no time making an impression on us. They, as one media person next to us shouted, were "frantic" and played the guitars as such. We liked the bluesy vocals and accompanying guitar riffs. The final song was a howl and a hoot, when the lead singer jumped [...]
Patrick Boissel, Alive Records Interview by Will Bray Blues is a continuous growing genre. It always has been and always will be. What the exact reason for this universal obsession which started as nothing more than cotton field folk music, no one can really tell you. Maybe because of it's natural sound, maybe because blues is so personal, maybe because it welcomes influence and maybe because blues tells great stories. More than likely it's because of all of those. Blues has been passed from father to son for generations and each time gathering momentum. Now taken [...]
