Come one come all to the magnificent and frightening Voodoo Experience 2009 Halloween spooktacular held deep in the swampy bayous of New Orleans at City Park! From outrageous costumes to glowing praying mantises, this year's Halloween celebration drew in an outrageous number of people to catch some of this year's hottest acts. Fans braved the freezing rain, which hailed all throughout the first day, and even withstood the muddy after effects on Saturday and Sunday. And all but one small setback (K'NANN canceled his performance last minute on Saturday) made this an exciting and fun filled weekend [...]
When the Tejas Brothers sing Lazy Lester's "Same Thing Could Happen to You," it sounds as if there's a Cinco de Mayo festival in the Louisiana swamps. Tex-Mex meets the blues. When you think about it, Tex-Mex and Cajun blues are really first cousins; Doug Sahm and Augie Meyers proved that. The connection is especially apparent on the Tejas Brothers' spicy rendition of Magic Sam's "That's All I Need" with the driving waves of an accordion commanding you to dance. The Tejas Brothers take their Tex-Mex sound to Bakersfield via Memphis on "Boogie Woogie [...]

The 2009 MidPoint Music Festival took place here in Cincinnati last weekend and now it's time to provide our thoughts. Enjoy this recap of the weekends festivities from contributor Dave Rolfes. So, how does one sum up three nights at MPMF? I'm not totally sure, but I'm here to give it my best shot here, and I thought my approach would be to highlight some of my favorite things about the weekend. It would appear that there are many different ways to go about it, but this to me seemed like a fun way to go. [...]
As always, there's an eight-hour pile of tracks for you today. Here's how it breaks down: - Six songs get repeated in that eight hours, so it's four hours between plays for those six songs. They're the ones in " The Grinder ", in case you're wondering what I mean by that when I say it on the FM Showcase (which, by the way, is on 90.5 The Night tonight at 10pm .) - The rest of the songs are set up so [...]

A joyous Cajun dance party on CD This young Lafayette, Louisiana quintet moves to the Lionsgate label for their third album, and packs along all the accordion- and fiddle-based flavors of their earlier releases. Though they play traditional Cajun music, in both covers and original compositions, they play with a joy that feeds off their youthful sense of glee. Where many Cajun records sound like studio-polished versions of an act's live show, the Pine Leaf Boys bring the swing and the foibles of the stage into the studio. The result is a disc [...]

The "World's Oldest Father and Son Cajun Music Duo", The Williamson Playboys, present a new revue (featuring some VERY old songs): "Brother, Can You Spare Some Pants?". We're 6 days into the Fringe Festival at this point, so I feel a little awkward still titling these profile pieces as "previews". At this point, I've already seen quite a few shows (you'll have to wait for the capsule reviews to find out which, though). I had issues getting online from a few rinky dink towns out in rural Ontario this weekend, in order to get this post, [...]
I liked both of Maximo Park's previous albums so I was quite surprised to find their new one, Quicken The Heart , to be rather boring and unexciting. It isn't terribly bad but it just falls flat when compared to the band's vibrant and endearing earlier work. Mainly (I think) it's just that the songs aren't as catchy and immediately rewarding as those on A Certain Trigger and Our Earthly Pleasures . I just don't love anything on the new album. It's all really quite [...]

As I've stated before, I was a writer for glorious-but-defunct Stylus Magazine. One of the more popular re-occuring bits on the site was a feature that we called "Summer Jamz," which were customized mixtapes curated by the individual writers. The purpose was for each writer to compile a playlist to celebrate a mood, theme, or meditation based on the season. And even though Stylus lies in the internet graveyard, many of its writers still continue the "Summer Jamz" tradition through the website The Passion of the Weiss , which is run by the world's greatest hip-hop writer (and former [...]
This week's Friday Night Dance Party feature is kind of a combination between that and a review. It's worth it though, so hang tight. Basically, it's another case of "last to know" for me.. it would appear the music blogosphere has been all over this track this week, it has been #1 on Hype Machine at least the last two days and I just became aware of it yesterday. The first link I clicked in relation to this song was written by someone at Binary, which is an LA dance music cooperative/record label, and based [...]
Cajun Dance Party - Amylase

Not much to update on: footy training was good, got a game this Saturday at Slacks Creek aka shitville (for all those people who live in Slacks Creek: I'm sorry*). I met the new, and very cute, EA at work. Kind of made up with Angela tonight after "The Boys Night" thing me and jesse did. 'Bout a quarter through Kingdom of Fear. And that's about it, so music time: Bodega Girls (like dancing, sweating, fucking then doing it all over) Cut Off Your Hands (like Sparkadia & a lot [...]

This is the second instalment of the 405's recommendations for bands that must not be missed at this year's Hinterland Festival, Glasgow (30 April - 1 May). Team Waterpolo If you plan on getting drunk then drink double the amount, because it's all going to sweat out when you dance like a freak to this band. www.myspace.com/teamwaterpolo The [...]

Words By Patrick M. The title to Flo Rida's new album R.O.O.T.S. (Route of Overcoming the Struggle,) conjures up visions of a lost Tribe Called Quest album. But have no fear Flo fans — R.O.O.T.S. is full of the saccharine club Hip-Pop we've come to expect from Miami's favorite hunk rapper. There's little room on the album for intellectual stimulation or exhibition of lyrical virtuosity, and most of the songs seem crafted for those with attention spans of 90 seconds or less. [...]

Those Dancing Days - Hitten Five Swedish chicks who have put together some really catchy tracks. Those Dancing Days are a little Au Revoir Simone meets Cajun Dance Party ; they've got the soft female harmonies that make you stand and listen and at the same time you could throw yourself around to it on a dancefloor. Currently touring Europe. " I feel like im lost in this body, trying to get inside my head "

It's been a while since the last mixtape, but we present to you Volume 5, an hour of superb dance-inducing dance music! (Or: songs that make you wanna get up and dance!). Enjoy! Viola - The Hardest Hit ♥ Digital Underground - The Humpty Dance ♥ The Grid - Swamp Thing ♥ Phonat - Learn To Recycle (Original Mix) ♥ Max Tundra - Which Song (Silverlink Remix) ♥ Junior [...]

I happened up on Cajun Dance Party whilst listening to my Last.fm recommendations. I didn't think much of this London five-piece the first time around but after I listened to "Amylase" a few more times and heard Daniel Blumberg sing the word "catalyst" I was pretty much sold. Quite honestly a very solid Britpop outfit. Catchy hooks and songs you can dance and sing to, even enjoy the lyrics while you garishly attempt to imitate their accents (I'm guilty). I do recommend this band as it has quite an eclectic sound and given how young [...]
