Ruth Swanson Seeing San Francisco's Ty Segall at Halifax Pop Explosion 2010 was one of the most unexpectedly rowdy/violent shows I've ever been in the middle of, which was a bit surprising considering that as rough and garage-y as his stuff is, it's not all that heavy. Certainly not the obvious soundtrack for the bedlam that ensued that evening. Maybe it was just Halifax. Anyways, despite enjoying his music well enough, I've made a point of avoiding his shows as the odds of me getting kicked in the head seem to [...]
Like Bonnie and Delaney meets Richard and Linda with better domestic results Rooted in the rich musical heritage of their Southern bailiwick, yet fully aware of the era in which they live, lucky record number seven finds Murfreesboro, TN roots stalwarts Glossary continuing to assert their role as the best band in America not named Centro-matic. Bad things still still happen to good people in the 21st Century and as such, Joey Knieser and company have set out to inject some positivity into the proceedings. Long Live...

A few weeks ago I posted a selection of my favourite songs of 2011 . A selection of 15 or so powered by the beauty of You Tube. Since then I have read some excellent lists that went a whole lot further. Up to 100 in fact. Like here , here , here , here and here . So I decided to create a list for myself. No real reason other then that I like to create lists. I see some list makers will limit each artist to only one song. Some go [...]

MP3: $100 Justin Kinkel-Schuster of St. Louis, MO band Theodore got together with Oxford, Miss. multi-instrumentalist Andrew Bryant to play some songs and record. Eventually a new project, Phantom Limb, was born - although another band named Phantom Limb already exists so the pair changed their name to Water Liars and titled their debut Phantom Limb . Album opener "$1003 kicks off with a big, sludgy guitar riff, then melds into a kind of rumpled folk-pop that fits in nicely alongside other artists who call Misra Records [...]

Another solo effort from the lead singer of a great band. For me, these are always met with a roll of the eyes and low expectations. Alot of times, the songs come off as castoffs from the main band's output or the lead singer just trying to broaden their horizon in a way that never fits. It never really satisfies my jones but coming off what I considered to be a subpar Hold Steady album, I was anxious to hear what Finn had up his sleeve. On Clear Heart Full Eyes, Finn manages to walk that delicate line [...]

Portland was an unrelenting adventure of starting an intense graduate program (80 class hours in two weeks), trying to taste all the beers in the city (failed), and also seeing five tremendous shows at four different Portland venues. I slept little, laughed much, and met rad folks. As the dad of the host family I stayed with bemusedly told me, his eyes crinkled with a smile as I clung to the coffee pot one early morning: "Well, you sure are squeezing every last bit out of this city, aren't you?" But I've felt tense and dry since [...]
From the misadventures of Holly, Charlemagne, and Gideon on Separation Sunday to their treatise on Boys And Girls In America , The Hold Steady has long been defined by singing songs for and about the American youth, something that was always curious but never suspect when you consider that Craig Finn, the band's principle songwriter, was in his mid-30s for the band's creative peaks. Now 40, Finn has recorded his first solo album in Austin, Texas with the help of members of White Denim, Heartless Bastards, Phosphorescent, and Centro-matic, as well as producer Mike McCarthy. The result [...]

They've got a catchy name and an even catchier sound – it's Americana supergroup Farrar, Johnson, Parker and Yames. "How did they come up with that magical moniker?" we hear you ask. Well, the group's formed of Jay Farrar (Son Volt, Gob Iron, Uncle Tupelo), Will Johnson (Centro-matic, South San Gabriel), Anders Parker (Varnaline, Gob Iron) and Yim Yames (My Morning Jacket, Monsters of Folk). They've got a Woody Guthrie influenced album on the way, titled New Multitudes, which is released on February 27 via Rounder Records as 12 track and 23 track (deluxe) editions. Listen below to a track [...]

Not that they should need much introducing really as together they make up a kind of Americana supergroup. Jay Farrar ( Son Volt, Gob Iron, Uncle Tupelo ), Will Johnson ( Centro-matic, South San Gabriel ), Anders Parker ( Varnaline, Gob Iron ) and Yim Yames ( My Morning Jacket, Monsters of Folk ) have delivered New Multitudes , an intimate interpretation of American icon and musical legend Woody Guthrie's previously unrecorded lyrics. Under the invitation of Nora Guthrie, Woody's daughter, to tour the Guthrie archives, each of the four songwriters were offered [...]

My Morning Jacket front man Jim James (or Yim Yames if you will) has announced that he has formed a new band for his new "Guthrie Project." The band features (Son Volt, Gob Iron, Uncle Tupelo), Will Johnson (Centro-matic, South San Gabriel), and Anders Parker (Varnaline, Gob Iron), and together the four guys have recorded an album compiled of songs that use lyrics written by Woodie Guthrie that he did not get the chance to use in his lifetime. They have compiled an album to celebrate the centenary year of his birth called New Multitudes . The [...]
Listen to a sort-of supergroup featuring members of My Morning Jacket, Son Volt, Centro-Matic, and Varnaline put unrecorded Woody Guthrie lyrics to music.
We've finally got more details and a song from the upcoming Woodie Guthrie tribute album by My Morning Jacket's Jim James, Son Volt's Jay Farrar, Will Johnson from Centro-matic and Varnaline's Anders Parker. New Multitudes features the four musicians interpreting some of Guthrie's unheard lyrics. Below you can stream "Old LA" and find the group's [...]
There's quite a collection of Americana big dogs at work on this track: Former Uncle Tupelo co-leader and current Son Volt frontman Ja Farrar, My Morning Jacket main man Yim Yames (or, as most of us still know him, Jim James), Centro-matic leader Will Jonson, and Gob Iron guy Anders Parker, as well as the ghost of Woody Guthrie. I'm going to have to add so many tags to this post! Here's the story: Woody Guthrie's daughter Nora invited all these musicians to pick through Guthrie's notebooks of unrecorded songs, the same way Billy Bragg and Wilco did [...]

To coincide with the 100th birthday of Woody Guthrie, My Morning Jacket's Yim Yames, Son Volt's Jay Farrar, Centro-matic's Will Johnson, and Varnaline's Anders Parker have recorded an album featuring previously unrecorded Guthrie lyrics. Entitled New Multitudes , the LP comprises interpretations on 12 Guthrie compositions, most of which were written during his time in Los Angeles. Says Guthrie's daughter Nora, who sanctioned the project: "Lyric wise, it's a part of the story that is still mostly unknown. From Woody's experiences on LA's skid row to his later years in Topanga Canyon, they are uniquely intimate, and relate two distinctly emotional [...]

Here's something rather special. Remember a few years back (well, 14 to be precise), Billy Bragg and Wilco joined forces to delve deep into the Woody Guthrie archive to create music for some of the hugely influential folk icon's back catalogue. What resulted was Mermaid Avenue (volumes 1 and 2), one of the true great collaborative efforts of recent memory. So it goes, Jeff Tweedy of Wilco's old sparring partner Jay Farrar (formerly of Uncle Tupelo, currently frontman of Son Volt) has teamed up with My Morning Jacket's Yim Yames, Will Johnson (Centro-matic) and Anders Parker (Gob Iron) [...]

Roughly two and a half years ago we reported that Jay Farrar (Uncle Tupelo/Son Volt), Jim James (MMJ) and Will Johnson (Centro-matic) had headed into the studio to a record a new batch of songs inspired by Woody Guthrie's unrecorded lyrics, a la Billy Bragg and Wilco's amazing Mermaid Avenue records. According to Paste , the trio were personally invited by Guthrie's granddaughter, Nora, to sift through the songwriter's notebooks and scratch pads to gain insight on the artist and his unfinished work. On February 28, the trio will [...]
Just when you thought the best of 2011 lists were over, we went ahead and did it. I now hate lists and hate myself for posting this. But it must be done. This is a starting point, so leave your favorites in the comments and I'll keep adding mine as a run across 'em. Woody and I threw this list together over IM one day, so I"m sure plenty of good tracks are missing, but here were some of our favorite songs last year. Hands down, my favorite track of last year is "Boeing 737." I [...]
