Have you ever had an appetizer that left you unsure of if you wanted your entree? Not because you were full, but because it was awful and just didn't agree with your stomach. That's how most of the audience felt after seeing Clap Your Hands Say Yeah frontman Alec Ounsworth ...
Best Coast's Bobb Bruno & Bethany Cosentino Hello everyone! Hope you all had a wonderful weekend. Far too many exceptional shows last week including last night's NO CANCER! Benefit show with No Age , Vivian Girls , Best Coast , Graham Forest , Darker My Love and more. I do believe Bethany from Best Coast 's performance as one of their most entertaining yet. [...]

4. The National - Alligator (Beggars Banquet) 2005 Of the 50 records that I'm (slothfully, hey it's February, how was your St. Brigid's day?) working my way through here I don't think any had the slow burning success that this one had. Positive reviews but negligible sales for the band's first two albums had established The National as something of a critic's band and when they released their third they probably can't have been too surprised that it was the same old story all [...]

It's been some time since we've checked in with New York band HOPEWELL. You may recall us heavily featuring their track 'Calcutta' starting back around 2006. They've had a lengthy history that includes countless singles and compilations, and opening for My Bloody Valentine on their recent reunion tour, working in the past with producer Dave Fridmann (Flaming Lips, MGMT, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah), recording a Peel session live at Abbey Road Studio, and playing Reading and Leeds Festivals - all without the help of a large label, manager or booking agent. Well, several [...]

Grand Lake at The Uptown in Oakland, from the HAD Archive . Photo by Rick Audet . Alec Ounsworth (of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah fame) is out on the road in support of his new solo record. As such, we couldn't have been more excited to discover that one of our favorite San Francisco bands, Grand Lake , was picked to support the man in this endeavor when he stops by the Bay. The musical gifts of both [...]

Honolulu Weekly interviews singer-songwriter Andrew Bird . Eye Weekly interviews Magnetic Fields frontman Stephin Merritt about his new album, Realism . People often attempt to read autobiography into Magnetic Fields' lyrics. But you've said that you're consistently writing in character. Who are these people? Only journalists ever talk about autobiography with me — I wonder if it's because journalists as a class want there to be [...]

A basement with no windows saw the birth of songwriting that came from the overactive pelvis, and a love of the ugly and loud. Out of that Brooklyn dungeon arose The Art Of Shooting and their debut full-length Traveling Show , out April 27, 2010. "The Art Of Shooting juxtaposes dreamy shoegaze with crunchy, epic rock," declares Time Out New York . The Brooklyn dream-punks forge an auditory surge that is artful, melodic and full of vocal harmonies. Aggressive, dissonant lullabies are mixed with hints of [...]

So, that happened quickly. Remember when I profiled L.A. duo Hands a couple months ago and said "watch for big things soon" ? Well, uh, I wasn't expecting this soon. They're on top of several playlists, notably with their glorious single "Hold", which will be released in physical format February 26 on German label Headphonica . "Hold" is a standout upon first listen - dark, experimental, and foreign sounding...very much like the newest Fredrik material off of Trilogi (did I just drop the F-bomb comparison??). Makes sense, then, that their label is not American. [...]

Moving Clocks Run Slow - We Were Promised Jetpacks I've still got a set of "best of the aughts" posts coming up. I'll try to get those out before the end of January. In the meantime, though, I've got some bits and pieces to clean up of the music I enjoyed last year but couldn't quite find a spot for on my lists and never got around to talking about otherwise. First is We Were Promised Jetpacks , who dwell quite nicely in the space carved out by fellow Scottish bands like Frightened [...]

Nathan Willett sounds like a man ready to plunge into the abyss, or at least a guy at a crossroads. In a way, he and his bandmates in Cold War Kids are. Four years after the scrappy quartet from Orange County (now, Long Beach) elbowed their way into indie hearts with their sweaty blues-punk, Willett, Matt Maust, Matt Aveiro and Jonnie Russell have been taking inventory — reconnecting with their home turf after too many months on the road, working on new songs and grappling with the notion that, with two albums down and a critical [...]
Dallas duo Smile Smile are playing the Living Room Thursday February 4, and we've got two tickets up for grabs. The band has toured with Metric , Mat Kearney and Loretta Lynn, and they've been described as "Mazzy Star-meets-Clap Your Hands Say Yeah." Their new album, Truth on Tape , is out February 9. And Brooklyn fashionistas on a budget will be happy to get their hands on a $100 gift certificate to Peachfrog , the discount store all the kids are trying to keep a secret. They even have a store [...]
Ok...I know. I didn't get chance to post Ten Tracks You Need last week. Long story, but let's just say that last week was not a good week in any way, shape, or form. It's sometimes amazing to think how 30 seconds can alter your life for days, weeks, months, years at a time. Anyway, I just wasn't in the mood to do TTYN last week or even listen to music. If you know me that's when you know something is seriously wrong. So here we are again and I'm happy to report that [...]
