Originally inspired by the Bowlie Weekender with Belle and Sebastian in 1999, All Tomorrow's Parties has turned into something of a global phenomenon - albeit in a cult-ish sort of way, an experience like no other, and now an experience that has made it on to the silver screen with ATP: The Film. Those interested in ATP tend to be so in a very dedicated fashion and as such, much of the material in this film has been compiled using footage taken by over 200 musicians, fans and filmmakers; leaving the lucky editor with about 600 hours to sift through [...]

It's never easy to map out an entire decade in music. So, in constructing the "Decade in Music" interactive timeline , we sought to shape it with some of the bigger tent-pole trends, news (Elton John performing with Eminem) and groundbreaking changes in the industry, business and technology (Napster, the iPod). We also wanted to highlight albums (Britney Spears, Danger Mouse, Radiohead) that took a snapshot of the era, as well as deaths (Ray Charles, Johnny Cash) that affected everyone. And, of course, we wanted to include the occasional "wardrobe malfunction" controversy or bizarre curiosity ("Trapped in the Closet") [...]
By Tobi Vail, musician, influential DIY punk zinester, activist and feminist theorist from Olympia, Wash. Beth Ditto on the cover of NME. ( courtesy of NME ) Like countless others, I watched Britney Spears' meltdown in early 2007 with an obsessive eye. What did it mean that her decline had been [...]

Harry Patch, the longest surviving veteran of World War I, lived an honorable life, his very existence serving as a reminder to countless others of how far we've come, and at what cost, in matters of international conflict and discourse. And thanks to an initially subpar rocker beef that's blossomed into something going on classic, Harry Patch has also served as a reminder of the life of composer Harry Partch, and how far we've come in matters of incorporating his 43 tone scale into countless blog posts. To recap: Radiohead wrote a song for Harry Patch the Tommy, [...]

By Oliver Wang Mainstream R&B radio, retail and video industries never had cause to pay retro-soul much mind until Amy Winehouse demonstrated its commercial potential. ( Sean Gallup / Getty Images Entertainment ) In the early 1990s, two brothers and some friends in Munich formed the Poets of Rhythm, a band inspired by the "deep [...]

Back in the 1970s, as part of their holiday marketing scheme, the RIAA introduced the world to the phrase, "Give The Gift Of Music." Over the years, during the holiday season, people do tend to buy more than they would at any other time. Often, it is the new releases that fly off the shelves and under the tree, but just as often, people are buying those old reliables, the Greatest Hits albums, to give as Christmas presents. With that said, I thought I would offer my thoughts, in chronological order, on 15 of the top Greatest Hits albums of [...]

There are certain bands that I associate with HearYa more than others. Bands like Ha Ha Tonka, Other Lives and Joe Pug are a few that blend great musicianship with amiable personalities. Port O'Brien is another of those bands and over the course of three albums and countless shows , Port O'Brien has never ceased to amaze us. It has been a treat to watch them evolve since Oz recommended them a couple of years back. I showed up a little late to the session and the first thing I noticed was a slight lineup [...]

I wasn't gonna do this, 'cause I know I'll catch all kinds of shit and lose mad respect just by putting my opinion out here, but here I go anyway. Just to get this out of the way, I have nothing but love for Joe Budden. But he wasn't one of the 10 most important rappers of the decade. With my list, I'm trying to pick the 10 people who I think did the best to move rap forward during this decade. As the 2000s started, many of us thought that rap had seen its [...]

Today Solange Knowles, future indie songstress––she's just severed ties with her major label, Interscope, has said she aspires to have a career like Bjork's, and allegedly turned her sis and Jay-Z on to Grizzly Bear––sent her cover of the Dirty Projectors ' "Stillness Is The Move" to Pitchfork , and from there it spread like wildlife. For me, and likely countless others, it generated more RTs than I've seen in weeks. Why? Because the cover is a perfect balance of the original song and Solange. She has as powerful and as inventive a voice [...]
The Bridal Shop are like that tree that falls in the forest that no one hears. Did it really fall? If it didn't impact millions of people does it really matter? If pop culture didn't write about it, celebrate it and then toss it away did it happen? For me it did (does). The Bridal Shop lasted 3 years and had a very small recorded output. Some of what they did record came out on the Peruvian label Plastina Records. Other releases were limited edition on Cloudberry. They were [...]

Filed under: News Let the debate begin. Morrissey is the greatest lyricist in the history of British popular music, according to a new book by Scottish academic Dr. Gavin Hopps. In 'Morrissey: The Pageant of His Bleeding Heart,' Hopps compares the singer to literary giants like Philip Larkin and Oscar Wilde. Moz, who gave us all such lyrical classics as 'Bengali in Platforms,' 'Barbarism Begins at Home,' 'Shoplifters of the World Unite and Take Over' and countless others with and without the Smiths , is [...]
Deastro , a.k.a., Randy Chabot, released Moondagger in June and it has been haunting my car stereo for months now. It's 14 tracks are still mesmerizing me, along with the various remixes and releases I've collected since then by this prolific artist. I've said it before and I'll continue to say it, the single most intriguing element of Deastro's music is the variety of sounds that he incorporates into a unified whole of incredible fantasy. As one London review noted, he has the "epic swagger of U2, the intimacy of Badly Drawn Boy, the bleepedy bleepness of Aphex Twin." [...]

I was baptized because of Grand Puba. Numerous times, I've stated my initial aversion to One For All . When me & Cookiehead boosted it (and about 15 other tapes), I initially told he could have it while I opted for UGK & some others instead. As an aside he also took Positive K's Skills To Pay The Bills and I'm telling you it's for him that TSS exists lol. But when I did finally listen to One For All a few months later, I was hooked. [...]

For Terre Thaemlitz, audio is never "innocent." From Thaemlitz's earliest ambient recordings, through a series of incredible electro-acoustic projects for the Mille Plateaux label, to a current triple-life as producer of astringently political "radio shows," deep house auteur as DJ Sprinkles and K-SHE, and writer/polemicist, Thaemlitz's project has always been to unsettle any putative audience's assumptions of what constitutes knowledge and politics. Thaemlitz is also possibly dance music's finest socio-political commentator. Not to mention her continual "queering of the pitch." With DJ Sprinkles's Midtown 120 Blues somehow managing to be one of the best dance music albums of [...]

Sterling new mix from Dissident's Andy Blake to support his new night with Joe Hart 'World Unknown', starting in a secret location in Brixton on Nov. 6th. Here's Andy's handy guide to the music they'll be playing: Belgian New Beat: a far wider selection of musical styles than most usually take it to mean. Often takes the form of industrial and European synth pop slowed down to 33rpm to accentuate the groove and low frequencies Cold Wave: vaguely scary European synth pop and experimental instrumental stuff. Imagine Depeche [...]

In the next few weeks there will be some ridiculous Greatest Hits collections going on sale. I have no problem with the Foo Fighters getting one, they've been doing their thing for a while now and have had some very solid singles over the year, and their collection of hits could easily replace their records on my shelves. But a band like Fall Out Boy??? Give me a break and get serious for a minute here. Over the years countless artists have put out scores of Greatest Hits collections to keep the money flowing in, or to give fans one [...]

AVATAR & DYNAMO "FADEAWAY" "Fadeaway" the first single from AVATAR & DYNAMO's brand new album "Chaos Theory".... Bio: Avatar is proud to be the purveyor of "Thinking Man's Hip Hop", a form of music characterized by deep, thought-provoking lyrics rife with wordplay, double (sometimes even triple) meanings, and utilizing any poetic device at the author's disposal. Delivered in his throaty, barbwire-tinged style, Avatar's lyrics reflect all points of his personal philosophy, from the borderline absurd ("some people shouldn't procreate—if they have to put paper bags over their [...]
