I know that its one of the Stuff White People Like to talk about The Onion , but they've done it again, y'all: Here's a link to the latest story about Science & Technology that details a David Bowie-themed N.A.S.A. mission called Starman. This obviously isn't as hilarious as the Pitchfork gives music 6.8 story, but the last paragraph gave me a solid belly laugh. The mission will surely be genre-defying.

In addition to wearing their 80's affection on the sleeves of their red Thriller jackets, there's a section of "Amarillion" where Datarock shows off a few more songs they like. About 3 minutes into the track, behind the vocals, there are lines sung from Cutting Crew's "(I Just) Died In Your Arms," David Bowie's "Changes," [...]

So I've been sitting on Laurent Bourque 's impressive debut CD for a few months now, trying to come up with the right way to describe it without making it sound like it's a bit on the dull side. You could slide it into the singer/songwriter genre, but that makes it sound boring. You could say it's a rock album, but that conjures up images of bar bands and classic rock, and that's not doing it justice either. And it's certainly hooky enough to be called a pop album, but the sounds are a tad too organic for it [...]
On Scratch My Back , his first album in 8 years, Peter Gabriel aims to shed light on outstanding songs from both rock warhorses (Paul Simon, David Bowie, Neil Young) and from an alternative lineup that reads like a college radio programmer's wet dream (Radiohead, Arcade Fire, Magnetic Fields).

Take cover! The new Peter Gabriel album Scratch My Back is a mixed bag of golden oldies and modern day artist songs. Mainly orchestral and sometimes radically reworked Gabriel tackles the songs with a mixture of glee and respect. The more subdued songs stand out - the melancholic piano and cello add texture to a slowed down version of Paul Simon's The Boy in the Bubble , and the strings in the Talking Heads' Listening Wind wrap the vocals like a comfy blanket. Pity that I Think it's Going to Rain Today [...]
As promised, here's the second half of the interview with David and Peter Brewis of Field Music after their gig in Brooklyn on 30 January 2010. In this half, we discuss topics as diverse as their musical influences, music history, music piracy, "staycations" and the future of the band - aren't you glad you came back? Note: The audio of this interview is located below. The transcript is included below and after the cut. Descriptions of what is happening have been placed between asterisks, i.e. "*Peter enters the room*" [...]

The first update of 2010 (and the first in more than 3 months!) is two days late, partly due to a computer virus, but better late than never! I'd almost forgotten how to write these. The website hasn't been entirely fallow since November; I've posted Best of 2009 posts on "music albums" and " Summerworks shows" , with "Fringe shows" coming up soon, and "comedy shows" and "music singles" not far behind. But the core of the site - the updates - well, it's good to have one of those up again, and I'm going to try to [...]

[Welcome back to the first Sunday Supplement of 2010, with Euan from the Steinberg Principle , amongst other things, returning to his regular slot. Next week will see the return of Campfires and Battlefields] Trampoline this month is going all pop on your asses. The shimmering guitar sounds will be out in full force. Matthew [the Astronaut, not the Toad] has organised this month's show, so I will use his very words to describe what's happening. Why write something myself when somebody [...]
Canadian alt-country balladeers NQ Arbuckle teamed up with singer-songwriter Carolyn Mark this past year for a collaborative release. The result was the full-length "Let's Just Stay Here", released through Vancouver's Mint Records mid-October. The album marks the first release from NQ Arbuckle since their 2008 Juno-nominated released XOK , and the first from Carolyn Mark since her 2007 LP "Nothing is Free". Driven by the strong storytelling one comes to expect from an NQ Arbuckle piece, and harmonies from Mark that often impress over the melody, Officer Down is one of [...]

Last night I watched the 2009 Sci-fi psycho-thriller, Moon , starring Sam Rockwell. The film is directed and co-written by David Bowie's son, Duncan Jones. On top of being an excellent movie, the soundtrack also got my attention. Check out the trailer. Kevin Spacey is the voice of Gerty, the computer. Doing a little online research, I found the music was written and performed by Clint Mansell. Where have I heard that name before? I dug a little deeper. You know what? Clint [...]

P&A live at the 2008 Wolfe Island Music Fest. I saw the amazing Plants & Animals three times in 2008, each possibly better than the last. I think they came to town last year but I missed every occasion and, likewise, I am going to miss them on Saturday at the Grad Club. You'll be missing them, too, if you don't have a ticket as it is long sold out (you should go to the $100 & Attack in Black show at the Mansion instead. Actually, even if you are going to P&A you [...]
