For ramblings on how I came to compile this list go here . And for commentary on previous selections: [ #50-46 ] [ #45-41 ] [ #40-36 ] [ #35-31 ] 30. Heartbreaker - Ryan Adams (2000) The argument that most of the world's greatest art is derived from sadness is one that I've always worked hard to refute, but a guy like Ryan Adams doesn't make it easy for me to do so. It doesn't [...]

Another great week of cool music! On Thursday there are some awesome choices: there's the legendary Al Green at the House of Blues (hopefully you took advantage of reduced tickets thru Live Nation), great indie rock at the Middle East Downstairs with The DoDos and The Ruby Suns, The Ego and the Oracle (aka Jim of Jim's Big Ego) at the Burren, the reclusive cult figure Daniel Johnston at the Paradise and more, how to choose? Friday brings Art Brut to the Middle East, Reverse to Church and the Spendid Nobodies to Toad; all are great choices. On Saturday you [...]

One of the highlights of my fabulously sunny, Indian-summer October weekend in California was seeing the legendary Gillian Welch with David Rawlings at the free Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival Saturday at Golden Gate Park. I'd never gotten to see her sublime and lovely music live, and it positively sprouted wings under the San Francisco cypress trees. The Emmylou Harris made a surprise appearance with her and David to clutch a lyrics sheet and sing a wide-smiled version of "Didn't Leave [...]

This month's Uncut Magazine has a list of their 150 Greatest Albums of the 21st Century so far (i.e. the best ones of the decade or noughties or whatever), and so far I've been unable to locate the full list online. Therefore I'm going to take the time to type them all out for you, and maybe even provide a little review or opinion piece at the end. 150 - Band of Horses Everything All the Time 149 - Ray Lamontagne Trouble 148 - Franz Ferdinand Franz Ferdinand [...]

If Pioneer Square is Portland's living room, the Oregon Zoo amphitheater is its backyard. And on pretty nearly perfect summer nights like Friday's, the amphitheater attracts Portland residents to the grass like bees to honey. "We got here at three o'clock and there was already a line!" reported one concert-goer. When I arrived at half past six, I was lucky enough to lay claim to a narrow strip of green on the upper lawn way back by the elephant house. The bustle and hum around me make me feel part of a whole even as I sat alone [...]

And lo, the flock of hipsters descended upon their annual roost on Chicago's near west side, drooling over a weekend of music deemed just weird enough to be cool (or just cool enough to be weird?). Getting off the Green Line at Ashland this one weekend of the year is like becoming part of a living blob of flannel and tight denim, chattering and adjusting eyeglasses. Yes, it's that time of the year again. The Pitchfork Music Festival returned to Union Park once again, but this time it had even more hype than it ever has. [...]
--- From drunken angels to grievous ones, this post is a continuation of sorts from the path I started beating yesterday. After posting the Lucinda Williams performance of "Drunken Angel" taken from her appearance on Sessions @ West 54th , I started browsing through the available videos from some of the other artists who had made appearances on the show during Sessions ' run on PBS in the late 90's. I don't think I ever saw any of the shows after they first originally aired and while there were a host of standout appearances, [...]

[Folks, today is 07/08/09, and maybe a numerologist could explain it to me, but I remember have a distinctly crappy 06/07/08 and 05/06/07. So I might not get out of bed today, even to wish Beck a happy 39th birthday.] The acclaimed Brooklyn avant-pop group Dirty Projectors hit town tonight behind their new release "Bitte Orca," which has an eccentric beauty to go along with its rather stubborn penchant for outsmarting itself. The sextet visits the Troubadour, supported by What's Up [Download: "Harper" ]. ... [...]

The summer concert season is upon us and the Hidden Track staff know that it's virtually impossible for us to afford every show we want to hit, and still be able to pay our insanely expensive New York City rents. Luckily for us, there are a plethora of fantastic free concerts throughout the summer that don't cost a dime. We decided to weed through them to give you our 2nd Annual NYC Free Summer Concert Picks. Let's take a look... HT Recommends: M. Ward / Mike Watt & Nels Cline [...]
