The Fiery Furnace is indeed fiery in his "Unedited Blog Post" and "Imaginary Response!" to Beck's "Harry Partch." Note: The sentence "That was written in a style I associate with a certain sort of Zappa fan" appears in one of them. Grab your decoder ring .

Hey there, we're back with a 2nd Announcement for Australia's Big Day Out Festival 2010. As we mentioned in our last post in October , this year's lineup has generated heaps of interest and an unprecedented, record breaking ticket sales for the 2010 tour. Now for the nitty gritty, down and dirty, more bands have been added to the lineup: The band that rewrote the history of Oz rock and made it possible for Aussie bands to once again take on the world, JET are bringing their [...]

The Big Day Out has announced lineup additions to the 2010 festival and while there's no sign of Rage Against the Machine's Tom Morello re-living his wild ol' day on the lily pad there are some pleasant suprises in the form of Devendra Banhart, Passion Pit, Simian Mobile Disco, MIami Horror, the Scare, DJ Dexter's Grrillastep crew and an Itch-E & Scratch-E rave reunion. Decoder Ring released a recent album this past summer (their winter) They Blind The Stars And The Wild Team . The album, which was recorded in the U.S. with American producer Scott Colburn in Seattle(Animal Collective, Arcade Fire). It is the conclusion of a journey (final album?) that began with the multi award winning soundtrack to the Australian film Somersault , which was followed by the critically acclaimed Fractions in 2005. Since their return from North America in 2006, the band's members have dedicated themselves to a period of sonic exploration in their Sydney based home [...]

Before we dive into tunes today, I wanted to pass along two wildly unrelated (and potentially , but hopefully not actually, uninteresting) things that happened today. 1. It was a great mail day, the kind of day that makes up for Columbus Day, when I received no mail. I got two things in the mail that are awesome. First, I won an ebay auction for the above pictured Sebadoh 7 inch single. It's on clear vinyl, which is completely badass, and sounds excellent. The best part? I bought it from Paul Lukas, head honcho at the excellent [...]

Though it sounds like they reward domestic violence or heroin addiction, Sydney's SMAC Awards (an acronym for Sydney Music, Arts and Culture ) celebrate the content creators, visionaries and culture merchants that invigorate The Harbour City. No wife beaters here, unless you count the Bonds variety sported at "Best Music Event" nominee Parklife . No addicts either, unless you count the crochet junkies from "Remix The City" nominee I Heart Kings Cross 09 . You get the point. But our favourite part of the awards, aside from acknowledging Sydney's unsung innovators, is [...]

Celebrating all things independent, the Australian Independent Record Labels Association have announced the nominees for this year's AIR Awards to be held in Melbourne's Forum Theatre on Sunday 22 November. Local heroes Sia, Dappled Cities, Decoder Ring, and The Drones lead the charge proving you don't need million dollar marketing budgets, 10,000 member street teams or majors to get recognition in Australia. Let's keep it that way Aussie battlers. Check out the nominees below... BEST INDEPENDENT ALBUM OF THE YEAR AWARD Bertie Blackman - Secrets And [...]

Watch the full concert at baeblemusic.com Watch the full concert at baeblemusic.com Above is footage of Bridezilla performing a live set for 'The Guest Apartment' at Baeble Music. In other Bridezilla news, their debut album 'The Last Dance' is out November 7 on Inertia. Yay. I had a brief correspondence with vocalist Holiday Cameron-Sparks in the lead-up to its release. The wily singer doesn't give away much about their impending record because "it's like giving away the sex of a baby," but it's only made me more keen to [...]

Steering By Stars - 'Closer' I don't know much about these guys except that they're seemingly from Adelaide and have at least one really beautiful track in the vein of recent Decoder Ring. After a frantic opening, 'Closer' morphs into a contemplative, piano-led number that doesn't just hinge its success as a post-rock composition on a predictable, impending crescendo, but actually turns the 'calm before the storm' into something of a storm itself. Apparently they'll also have an album out by the end before relocating to Iceland (NB: the latter is still unconfirmed, but [...]
With a new drummer in tow , Dappled Cities [ MySpace ] hit the ground running with their third release, Zounds . And, as the name suggests, it's both surprising and darker than previous Dappled albums. It's infused with everything you want in "art rock" - the keys outweigh the guitar, the abstract lyrics, the funkadelic musical bunny trails. This album hints at The Velvet Underground influences; Tim Derricourt even sounds like Lou Reed in several songs. The updated glam sound scapes are much tighter on this release than [...]

Here is the first post here concerning my radio show called Weekend Warmer : 2 hours of underground dance music twice a month on a Brighton-based web-radio called Brap FM . For this episode, I had the privilege to host a guest mix by French DJ Ecarat . It's been 12 years that DJ Ecarat has been generous with the crowds, giving them a fresh, groovy and eclectic selection. Always curious and never stuck in a single style, he's been from fidget to electro, minimal to trance or crazy breakbeat (or [...]
Ex- Decoder Ring member, Lenka Kripac, mostly known as Lenka , is an Australian television actress turned whimsical musician, mostly recognized for her song The Show from her self-titled album Lenka . Released the 23rd of September 2008 through Epic Records, her self titled debut sparkles with Regina Specktor -like free spiritedness and bleak subjected lyrics hidden within catchy tunes and folk pop melodies. As part of our Outside Lands Kuestionnaire Series, Lenka swings by the Kata Rokkar to answer today's Kuestionnaire before she [...]
The Decoder Ring album tour/victory lap will roll into Sydney town this Friday, with the band playing a show at the Metro Theatre with Seekae and Bridezilla in support. The show has been described by my time traveling homiez as "a large slice of epic pie, with spinkles of sonic amazingness on top". Zapping through black holes can make you hungry (obvs). To celebrate the event the Inertia Broz/Legendz have been kind enough to give us a pair of double passes to lovingly throw in the direction of our readers. [...]
The inimitable Decoder Ring's much lauded fourth album, They Blind the Stars, and the Wild Team is digitally released today via iTunes. The album produced by Scott Coburn, who has recently worked with such artists as Animal Collective, Arcade Fire and Yeasayer is a multi-layered affair, heavy with soaring soundscapes and melodic crescendos. Critics far and wide cannot say enough about the album. Seminal music magazine, Mojo recently described the album as, "Mazzy Star and Virginia Astley go on a stoner picnic only to find Yo La Tengo in the next Field!" while Rolling Stone gave [...]
