I'm with you, kids - let's celebrate the end of another week. Before we leave, though, let's do a quick recap: - We had more fun with Magnetic Fields covers . There's a whole slew of more fun coming this Sunday, when Part Five drops. - I dreamt of crack . which was whack, but it helped to remind me of The Moldy Peaches, which was whacker. It also reminded me to subtly plug my nascent dream blog , which was the whackest of all. - We saw Random [...]

For ramblings on how I came to compile this list go here . And for commentary on previous selections: [ #50-46 ] [ #45-41 ] [ #40-36 ] [ #35-31 ] 30. Heartbreaker - Ryan Adams (2000) The argument that most of the world's greatest art is derived from sadness is one that I've always worked hard to refute, but a guy like Ryan Adams doesn't make it easy for me to do so. It doesn't [...]

Nudge is a slightly loose collective lead by Los Angeles based musician Brian Foote. When he's not busy recording bands from the Deerhunter family, namely Atlas Sound and Lotus Plaza, he gets together with a few talented friends to record beat-heavy electronic music with an unique style that ranges from dub and rocksteady to psychedelic rock and jazz. "Two Hands" comes from the latest Nudge album, As Good as Gone , released earlier this year via Kranky . This one kind of sounds like early Portishead meets psychedelic rock... Nudge - "Two [...]
Pretty good interview with the Deerhunter / Atlas Sound frontman. Post-pneumonia bed-riding, Cox runs through Logos song by song for the first time, along with some other good anecdotes ("I am asexual"). Deerhunter - Saved By Old Times
Slowly but surely Bradford Cox has become one of my favorite artists over the past couple of years. Ever since I saw Deerhunter at the ICA down on the Boston Waterfront I've been craving any and everything that Brad puts his hands on. I just picked up the new album, Logos, from Atlas Sound, Brads [...]
After it took Portishead ten years to make their third album, their output is picking up at a rapidly. Geoff Barrow hooked up with Billy Fuller and Matt Williams to form the band Beak>, and their debut album is pretty awesome. It's got some Deerhunter aesthetic to it in the drums and bass ("I Know" especially), which is why I said I'd call it Atlas Sound day... well, I guess Deerhunter day would make more sense. Whatevs. I'd label the album as progressive rock, but it has a lot of slower moments, so maybe just rock [...]
I guess you can call it Atlas Sound day on musicleech. Been posting slowly lately because of school work, but I do have one other thing I want to share today. Will post it right after this. Anyway, this is the video for Atlas Sound's epic 8-minute crescendo "Quick Canal" featuring Stereolab's Lætitia Sadier on vocals. It mostly follows around an American family through daily activities like cooking toast (exciting, right), and it's relaxing if not nostalgic. The leaked version of Logos (which I confess to having heard) had the instrumental of this [...]
If you're curious about the man behind the music ( Deerhunter / Atlas Sound ), Pitchfork just did a really comprehensive interview. He said he wasn't planning on doing that many interviews so that he would just go ahead and open himself up to a lot of questions. Check it out here . It's been over a decade since Mercury Rev's Deserter's Songs and Neutral Milk Hotel's In The Aeroplane Over The Sea , two albums that pushed the boundaries of chamber-pop and psychedelic rock in an era of indie innovation that has few rivals. Without shouldering them with the burden of exaggerated expectations, blossoming Los Angeles act Pepper Rabbit picks up where those records left off - stylistically, if not yet quite qualitatively. But on two self-released EPs, the band's music aches with potential. Throughout, Pepper Rabbit goes dark and deep, letting [...]
Bradford Cox's Deerhunter side project Atlas Sound play Whelan's on Saturday (because it's been at least 2 months since he was last there) with support from Hulk. Thanks to the people at Foggy Notions I've got a double pass to give away to the gig. To be in with a chance to win the tickets answer this question by e-mailing thrillpiercomp@gmail.com with "Atlas Sound" in the subject. An early version of the newest Atlas Sound album Nouns leaked on to the web last year when somebody went [...]

Atlas Sound is the solo project of Deerhunter vocalist and guitarist Bradford Cox. To date he has released two full-length records, Let The Blind Lead Those Who Can See but Cannot Feel in 2008 and just last month Logos . Both records have been released on Kranky (and in some countries 4AD ), just like the Deerhunter catalogue. He has also released an impressive range of EPs and singles on the Deerhunter blog. For me, Let the Blind represented everything I [...]

I've still yet to replace the video camera I smashed on tour this summer, but luckily some other folks have been taping local shows. I just stumbled across hundreds of great concert videos on youtube from ifilmbands , There is a multitude of cool stuff posted, like the recent show from The Meat Puppets & Dead Confederate and a ton of Deerhunter related stuff including Lotus Plaza and Atlas Sound solo. But since I have been listening to the new respective records from Atlas Sound and The Selmanaires [...]

Deerhunter frontman Bradford James Cox released Logos to quite a bit of fanfare, which makes it one of the one percent of albums that lives up to its indie-hype. Cox seems to have hit the midpoint of several subgenres, suckering in disparate fans with his combination of upbeat harmonies, dreamy vocals, ambient synthstruments, distorted guitars, and, of course, the indie rock standby:

By Carrie Brownstein As beardy indie-folk takes over, is rock losing its edge? (Getty/Fergus McDonald) These are strange times in rock music when the genre's big brothers and elder statesmen -- those pillars of manliness, with upper bodies so capable and broad that it looks as [...]

Chicago post-punk rawk legends The Jesus Lizard reunited in 2008 and performed at May 2009's ATP vs. The Fans II: The Fans Strike Back in Minehead, England along with the likes of Devo, Killing Joke, and Sleep. By all accounts, and judging by the above photo, it musta been an incredibley intense show. Fast forward to 9/11/2009. The Jesus Lizard take the stage at the Stardust Ballroom up at Kutsher's Resort in Monticello, NY for All Tomorrow's Parties second annual New York festival . In case we had forgotten, David Yow made sure to wish [...]
