Just when you thought musicians had left behind their wolves and crystals in favor of whales , this vintage psychedelic London quartet arrives with Tidings . Thing is, the collection gathers recordings made by main Wolf Jack Sharp in Bedford, England between 2005 and 2007, so technically they were right on time with the Wolf thing. Their sound, though, comes from a different time entirely. Or, as the well-written press release puts it: Stitched together in a style reminiscent of Faust or early Mothers Of Invention, the songs lay nestled in snatches of field recordings, winding [...]

Album of the Quarter : A Sunny Day in Glasgow - Ashes Grammar Runners up: Memory Tapes - Seek Magic , Mount Eerie - Wind's Poem I am well aware that this podcast is a good month and a half removed from the end of 2009's third quarter, and that we are balls deep in the year's capping three-month span. But, perhaps the extra reflection has further winnowed the included tracks down from the fickle week to week whims of the blogosphere? Let's just pretend that that's [...]
Along with one-man bands like Washed Out and Memory Tapes, Toro y Moi have spent 2009 generating buzz by trafficking hazy, retro dance tracks that sound like an old John Cusack movie heard through rose-colored earmuffs. Early looks at Toro y Moi's version of the sound proved engaging, and now there are details on the full length debut. The first album from South Carolinian producer Chaz Bundwick will be titled Causers Of This , and will come out in Feb. 23 via Carpark Records. It is one of two records that [...]

Drums Play Spaceland Monday Night (and It's Free) Ray Davies put on a fantastic show on Saturday night at the Orpheum. If you get a chance to see him on this tour do not hesitate. More on that later. Another great week this week. If you're into buzz bands you might want to check out Drums tonight, The Big Pink on Wednesday, Tape Deck Mountain on Thursday, Neon Indian on Friday and The XX on Saturday. Some of those will be good, but I'm recommending a variety of [...]
According to Child Bite at Death By Audio this weekend, " Total Slacker are as cute as buttons," blending together not only the most bud-heavy of beach-pop jams but the badass appeal of just being in a band and having the best time with each other. Whether they're tearing apart the stage at Shea Stadium or hot-boxing their spray painted van, Emily, Tucker and Ross are just all-around awesome folk that want to show you how much fun it is to do what you love. After a night at the Cake Shop, we headed back to my [...]
Part 1 By: Joshua Rampage There are a candid few who can welcome an inconvenient and uncomfortable interruption into their lives so readily, but I was getting a little bored with feeling healthy every day anyway. So I did some smooching and before anyone could start snorting, I was sick. Self-diagnosing led me to believe I was suffering from the early stages of Pig Flu. I began to obsessively check my nose for an upward-tilt and my butt for a burgeoning corkscrew tail, but found evidence of neither. Instead, I was forced [...]

Does video art sap the life right out of musical lyricism, stifling imagination? I begin today's Radio Dick with my simplistic and probably naive assertion that one ought to still read words and not dive too heavily into visual culture. My thoughts have been weighing pretty heavily on this idea lately; my 9th grade class is moving through Romeo and Juliet with me and I can't help but notice the dwindling patience with the text, the lack of analysis without strong coaching from my end with visual stimuli. The largely thematic aspects of the play still garner interest, [...]

Beggars have announced initial details of the planned super-deluxe Omnibus editions of The Fall's back catalogue. The first release will be the brilliant This Nation's Saving Grace, originally released in 1985. The reissue will come in a box with accompanying notes and additional tracks from the Beggars archive. Intriguingly, these promise material from what Beggars describe as "two reels of early, rough mixes of the album recordings which lack the polish off the final mixes but have an accessible… well, roughness. Roughsticity. Rough-a-loogability – somesuch lack of refinement." These include versions of 'Cruiser's Creek', 'Rollin' Dany' [...]

Last week I published the "bonus" material from the interview I did with Megadeth bassist James LoMenzo . Today, the magazine ( MELT ) with the proper interview hits shelves in locations around central Ohio. Read the interview, as published in MELT. MEGADETH NOVEMBER 18 @ LIFESTYLES COMMUNITY PAVILION If there's one thing you can count on, it's a new Megadeth CD every couple [...]
Can a man who built his career around swirling guitars and the outer edges of rock write an alt-country record? Christopher Crisci has been plugging away in the world of atmospheric post rock with The Appleseed Cast since the decade started, and as of this year released one the more ethereal records in that bands catalogue. But all is not what it seems, and ambition can come in unexpected ways. Unless you've been around the Crisci camp for a while, you might have missed his alter ego and musical collective Old Canes . It's a reclusive one [...]

By Tobi Vail, musician, influential DIY punk zinester, activist and feminist theorist from Olympia, Wash. To read more of her writing, check out Jigsaw Underground photo by Joaquin de la Puente At the end of the '90s, I got excited when I realized that young girls no longer needed to hang out with creepy record-collector guys in order to find out about cool music. Information was out there for everyone to access equally via the Internet. Knowledge about obscure records could [...]

A very excited fan. (Flickr, The Advanced Guard) Here are more results from the survey we sent out to a variety of folks in the music, arts and entertainment communities. Here was the question: How much physical evidence of your music fandom have you shed in the past decade? How much have you collected? Lance Bangs, [...]

In the Book Notes series, authors create and discuss a music playlist that relates in some way to their recently published book. The Simpsons is one of my favorite television comedies of all time, and John Ortved has written an invaluable oral history about the show. Covering the show's inception of The Tracey Ullman Show to its unlikely and unpredicted success in its first season and on through its later years, The Simpsons: An Uncensored, Unauthorized History not only reminds us of the greatness of the show but [...]

Some tasteful drum and bass, definitely on the jazzy side. Mercury Music Prize-tastic in 1997. From his own biog: Roni Size started on the path of musical production when he was thrown out of school at age 16, but music had always been a part of his life. Roni was born and grew up at 'the top of the hill' a.k.a. St Andrew's, Bristol. From the bottom of this hill came the sounds of the 70's blues parties and sound-systems - the beat infected Roni's bones. So, after being expelled [...]

Today on 11/11 @ 11:11 it's time for my 'favourite backing band' (o-tone Max Headroom) :-). This band was well known for their non-album tracks which were released on the B-sides of their singles only. Most of them also were released digitally, but not this very special one. The reason was, because the A-side of this single contents parts of a song, composed by an American singer/songwriter, and therefore no release in the U.S. did happen. Some 'in-house' tapes were produced and luckily they survived and were spread out to the www recently in a represantetive quality. But why taking [...]
Whether you want to admit it or not New Jersey bands tend to fit a particular sound for the most part, luckily The Black Hollies give the Garden State some diversity when it comes to rock n' roll. The Jersey City quaret have just released their 3rd LP Softly Towards the Light , out on Ernest Jenning Recordings and is already picking up steam. Justin Angelo Morey, singer and bassist of The Black Hollies was nice enough to answer some questions for us regarding their new record, touring and the history of the group. [...]
