When did this record come out? May ? Jeez Louise, it really takes some time to get around to these things. I meant to pick up Viva Voce's Rose City when it was released, but I never did; and not until after their excellent show at the Seattle Center Mural was I finally compelled to get my grubby little paws on it. I think you'll be glad I did. Or, at least, I'm glad I did. Can't really say what you'll think. . [...]

Many shy away from admitting they enjoy some Duran Duran; the fact they had thousands of teenage girls screaming for them for a few years somehow degrades their pop value (teenage girl fans are apparently credibility-suckers - another argument for another time). As a band, Simon LeBon and Co generally take the flak for the sins of the 80s: excess, commercialist greed, hyperbolic style, etc. I, myself, was a teenager in the 90s when I first heard Duran Duran, and while listening to songs like Planet Earth, Girls on Film, Hungry Like the Wolf, and The Reflex, I became a [...]

We last saw Muse live October 30, 2000. It was a stunning show from the then fresh-faced three-piece. No fancy visuals, laser shows or equipment, but by god did they pack their piss and vinegar that night – the set culminated with Matt Bellamy on all fours ripping the strings off his very-bruised plug in baby. Things have changed. Muse are now one of the world's apex rock acts. A guaranteed good night out in an industry that doesn't do guarantees. Their cerebral arrangements charm classical buffs and dadrockers, yet they have the bite and bile [...]

This week, I'm listing my top five songs (at moment) that make me grin, smile or even laugh out loud. It won't be a collection of parody songs, or songs by comedy acts, but by indie bands that take a stab at humor in their songs. What's good about the songs in this list is that, they're not only witty, but pretty to listen to at the same time. So, perk up your ears and get ready to turn that frown upside down. ;) [...]

Live at the Comcast Theatre, Hartford, CT 2009/08/14 photo: Dave Vann (c) Phish 2009 Phish fans are sure about one thing: you got to see and hear the band live. The studio albums only hint at what the Vermont quartet is capable of. So why bother releasing another album? Is Joy yet another failure? No, it's not. Producer Steve Lilywhite urged the band to kep it simple, telling the band to play the tracks live and refrain from overdubs with the notable [...]
Mighty High - Drops a Deuce - Cable TV Eye b/w Hands Up! (live n nasty) There's no doubt about it. Mighty High really is Brooklyn's most "regressive rock act." Draped by some of the most mind-blowing R. Crumb style artwork imaginable (courtesy of Wayne Braino Bjerke) Mighty High really do drop a deuce onto an unsuspecting, slightly horrified public with this amplified, hellified, fuzzified blitzkrieg of raving retro, primal bone marrow rock and roll. Just imagine someone driving a big old rusty screw bit right through the [...]

Wild Nothing is 21-year-old Blacksburg, Virginia songwriter Jack Tatum (aka Jack And The Whale aka a member of Facepaint ). Yeah, another one man band. But no, not just another one man band. Instead of doing the fuzzy lo-fi thing, Tatum wraps his elastic voice in a dramatic dream-pop haze. (Or in a song like "Live In Dreams" you hear bedroom Marr and Moz.) In an interview he mentions the Cocteau Twins along with Shop Assistants, My Bloody Valentine, and, yes, the Smiths (plus the Radio Dept. and other Swedish pop-makers) as influences. To give you more [...]

Shaa'ir + Func , menwhopause (pictured) and Motherjane will represent India on a new compilation called PEACE that features artists from over 50 countries. The compilation will be released digitally in January 2010 with a pay-what-you-want system (minimum two Euros), and all the proceeds will go to Amnesty International's humanitarian aid projects in areas of conflict. Over 100 artists are participating in this effort from regions as diverse as Palestine, Algeria, Burundi and Iceland. What's cool about this compilation is that it's not one of those no-cred comps that features absolutely unknowns. [...]
DATELINE: CAMBRIDGE, MA - It's hard to imagine what the Boston music scene would be like today without the influence of Mark Sandman . As a member of local legends Treat Her Right and the frontman to celebrated sonic plowmen Morphine, Sandman was a real game changer. And I will add that he affected the lives of people in not just the sense they loved his music. The songs he created changed the way a lot of way listened to music. Take for example Morphine: Mark Sandman's distinctive and emotive voice [...]
This is one of those weekends that I've been looking forward to for a long time and if you have too then yay! It's here. On Thursday, there's free ice cream at Coldstone Creamery which is a good start to any weekend. Also on Thursday, there are good choices for music for exotica/tiki music there's Waitiki at Ryles, there's Moby at the House of Blues, there's Poi Dog Pondering at the Regatta Bar, there's Elizabeth and the Catapult at TTs and Three Day Threshold at Toad. The Friday show that I'm really looking forward to is a big one at [...]
by chris carpenter Mother Mother has floated on and off the indie radar since the band's inception in 2005. They quickly garnered national attention through some major gigs and high level press in their home city of Vancouver, leading the group to sign a four album deal with Last Gang Records in 2007. Their re-released debut album Touch Up was well received by critics and was shouted out by the annoyingly popular Perez Hilton. The quintet is still touring for their second release [...]

What more can we say? Who needs much of an intro when you've got 5,000 words on day 3 of MFNW, complete with Sunny Day Real Estate, Bad Brains, the LC showcase and drunken antics at the afterparty. Contributors include Mark Stock, Matthew Singer, Jenny Booth, Aaron Mesh, Kelly Clarke, AP Kryza, David Robinson, Devan Cook, Matthew Korfhage and Rebecca Raber. Michael and Casey both tweated the night away, and those will be added later. 3:35 pm @ Work Realizing now that determining who to see on tonight's bill is [...]
Joy , the first Phish album after returning from a 5 year break-up, is the quartet's most successfully accessible and mainstream friendly album to date. Comprised of straight forward rockers and catchy tunes that dabble near pop, Joy might be Phish's best attempt at producing something that does not necessitate being a die-hard fan to enjoy. And that may be the very reason why die-hard fans won't love this album. Producer Steve Lillywhite (U2, Peter Gabriel, Morrissey and Phish's 1996 release Billy Breathes ) left little room for meandering guitar solos or anything that might be labeled [...]
Happy Autumnal Equinox! I can't believe that we are entering the fall season, how did that happen? Fortunately there are many shows to occupy our time and to keep us from thinking about the upcoming cold weather that right around the corner. On Thursday I hope you got you code to see Polyphonic Spree at the Paradise. If you didn't, there's always uke master Melvern Taylor at Toad or you can go to the Middle East to catch Hollywood starlet turned to rocker, Juliette Lewis. On Friday, there are lots of great choices and you can't go wrong with any [...]

Most baseball players dream of playing in the World Series, most actors dream of winning an academy award and most musicians dream of performing their compositions at Carnegie Hall with the New York Philharmonic. Last night, Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio got to fulfill that dream when he took the stage with most legendary orchestra in the world at arguably the most famous venue in the world and he made the most of the opportunity. [All photos by Benjamin Slayter / Slayter Creative] Anastasio and the Philharmonic [...]
When Phish broke up in 2004, for what many thought would be forever, they went out on a bad note. Their last performance, closing Coventry Festival, was an epic muddy disaster , and their last album is still widely regarded as their weakest. Still, though, Phish fans had faith, and when the band returned with a three-night stint at Hampton Coliseum in March, no one was surprised that Phish was playing at their early-90's best. The sold-out return weekend was only the beginning; the summer tour raged on coast to coast for three months, with [...]

The Circus was one of our picks from the latest edition of Channel V Launchpad . Their Incubus inspired alternative is delivered efficiently and makes no bones about what it is and where it finds its roots. The band is gearing up to release its debut album From Space (on Grey & Saurian) and is previewing material on its official MySpace page . Three new recordings have been posted 'F.O.P.S' 'Cover Band' 'Japanese Rebellion' The new songs are pretty much what we've come to expect [...]

Depending on how you look at it, being one of the world's preeminent experts in the field of mastering could be considered either a) an under-appreciated role in the process of creating an album that doesn't always get the respect it deserves, or b) the greatest job in the world. A quick surf through Bob Ludwig's credits at the All Music Guide illustrates that he not only very likely holds the world record for sheer number of album credits, but he has put the finishing touches [...]
