Paste interviews David Rawlings about his debut solo album, A Friend of a Friend . Paste: You cover some songs on this record—including a medley of "Method Acting" by Bright Eyes and "Cortez the Killer" by Neil Young. How did that come to be? Rawlings: A couple years ago, at the end of '07, Conor [Oberst] called me and asked me if I would come play guitar with Bright Eyes because Mike Mogis was producing a record and it was running on, and they [...]

Where were you on the night before the dawn of the New Millennium? Jon Kerr was getting a pit going in Jilly's Rockworld, Manchester. We've asked him to summarise the ten years since then in all things metal in a handy A to Z S layer No Slayer, no thrash. Right? Following their four classic '80s albums, Slayer's four '90s albums received a varied reception as the band branched out in style. During this last decade, Slayer have succeeded in cementing [...]

Taco Bell's Feed the Beat promotion has had a stumble or two in the past--such as when famed vegetarian Ted Leo won without even entering. However, giving bands free food on the road is always a great promotion (and, for the record, Taco Bell DOES offer vegetarian options). The announced winners for 2009 are after the jump. Though I'm wondering if "Electronic Six" from the list of winners is supposed to be "Electric Six." Let's hope it's not a Ted Leo-ish flub! Winners of the 2009 Feed the [...]

The Australian music label Hidden Shoal Recordings today announced the US CD and worldwide digital release of the eagerly awaited sophomore album by Australian indie math-rock marvels Mukaizake . The cliché 'all killer, no filler' is often bandied around with very little to back it up. In the case of Mukaizake's stunning new release Unknown Knowns , the cliché applies: this six-song, half-hour mini-album is sheer perfection. Unknown Knowns kicks off with the fuzzy propulsion of single ' The Yeah Conditioner ', immediately launching the listener into Mukaizake's compelling corner [...]

Kirk Degiorgio's name is not synonymous with minimal techno. Over the course of his 18-year career you could count on your hands the number of releases that would even qualify as club-approved tackle. Degiorgio made his name with multi-hued Detroit-inspired techno and went on to produce soulful music in a variety of genres, but rarely touched on straightforward dance floor-ready tracks. Today we see Degiorgio taking a new path that embraces this side of techno, both in terms of production and DJing. Degiorgio rebooted his Applied Rhythm Technology (ART) label this year and is focused on creating full sounding techno [...]

In the morass of live activity towards the end of last month, the concert that kicked it all off for me that week was criminally buried for a while. Rising zombie-like from its freshly patted down grave, then, is a barnstorming show from two highly charged rock bands hitting gentrified Brooklyn for six....... A three band bill with comedy-rockers Electric Six at its peak, my chief reason for attending was to catch locals The Gay Blades [...]

Scanners are a London-based rock outfit formed by Matt Mole (guitar, vocals, synths) and Sarah Daly (vocals, bass, violin), later rounded out with the addition of Amina (guitar, keys) and Tom (drums), resulting in the sound and on-stage chemistry that the band is acclaimed for. 2009 saw Scanners finish up recording their second album Submarine with producer Stephen Hague (New Order), which will be released in February 2010 through Dim Mak . The band's debut album titled Violence Is Golden [...]

[ download ] This past May, Brooklyn's Paul and the Patients debuted with a five song EP entitled To the Lions . The release was but a mere glimpse into chief songwriter Paul Holmes' prolific catalog, with Holmes routinely penning and recording at least a couple of tracks per week. Recently, the band decided to capitalize on this bounty by undertaking their To the Lions project, wherein the band records and posts a new song every week to a dedicated website . There, listeners can stream songs [...]

[Birthday greetings today to roots-rock king Dave Alvin, who, by the way, will be playing one of the upcoming West Coast, Left Coast events at Walt Disney Concert Hall — he's there Dec. 6 with Brian Wilson and the Living Sisters (Inara George, Becky Stark and Eleini Mandell). Here's what's up tonight:] Australia-by-way-of-Chicago's Via Tania [pictured, with download below], the nom de tune of Tania Bowers, brings her self-described "moon pop" (she's drawn comparisons to Bat for Lashes) to the Bootleg Theater for the second of two L.A. Hey there, we're back with a 2nd Announcement for Australia's Big Day Out Festival 2010. As we mentioned in our last post in October , this year's lineup has generated heaps of interest and an unprecedented, record breaking ticket sales for the 2010 tour. Now for the nitty gritty, down and dirty, more bands have been added to the lineup: The band that rewrote the history of Oz rock and made it possible for Aussie bands to once again take on the world, JET are bringing their [...]

Last week I wrote about the charity album Playing For Change . Hopefully you checked it out, and possibly even bought a copy of your own by now. Although only ten tracks, it's a powerful collection of music that deserves your attention and coin. Today I've got another charity project that is equally as deserving: Funk Aid For Africa . Here's what is given in the liner notes for the album: "Funk Aid For Africa is the first in a series of compilations created to raise funds for African children affected by [...]

Ray Davies Appears at the Orpheum on Saturday Night I didn't get up to as much as I'd hoped last week, but did catch Julian Casablancas and the Happy Hollows at Spaceland. Casablancas didn't do anything to win me back, but most of the crowd seemed really into it. I'll definitely be at Ray Davies this Saturday and I'll most likely check out more of the Happy Hollows tonight. Monday 11/9/09 [Pick of the Night] [...]
