Acre - Untitled 1 I've had this for wayyyyy too long, and while I can make excuses for not having written about it yet (like I moved and couldn't find my copy to scan for the artwork, or I've been too busy, or I couldn't think of anything to say because it's so fucking brilliant) they're all pretty much irrelevant. Reason being: Acre's Isolationist is unbelievably amazing drone. Let's face it. Winter's coming [...]

Hidden Shoal Recordings is proud to announce the official release of the eagerly awaited sophomore album by American post-ambient craftsman Wes Willenbring . Close, But Not Too Close sees Willenbring develop on the gorgeous palette of tones explored on acclaimed debut Somewhere, Someone Else . As with Willenbring's debut, Close, But Not Too Close is all about time in both it's broadest and most discrete sense. There is a [...]

Whoah, this was unexpected. We knew Portland experimental rock/folk/etc. trio Ghost to Falco had been touring a lot, but we didn't know there was a record coming out so soon. The band, currently in Europe, will release third full-length Exotic Believers as a vinyl-only release before the month is out. If you haven't checked out Ghost to Falco, you really should. Eric Crespo's group plays a lyrically conscious experimental folk-pop with nods to post-punk acts like Fugazi and Cursive. Just when one anticipates Crespo's next twist or turn, he injects a jazzy departure or wall of [...]

At undomondo we love small indie publishing houses powered by love. Silber Records with their "Drone love honesty sound" motto is one of them. Focusing on leftfield indie genres like slowcore, shoegaze and their bigger brother post-rock, they've become a go to label for everything that includes wall of sound in their 13 year history. Two new releases by hitherto unknown (to us) acts, Vlor and Aarktica are now out on Silber. Although Vlor has been around since 1992 in various forms, Six-Winged is their second full length. A versatile band of musicians, dubbed [...]

[Welcome back to Euan's monthly Sunday Supplement column here on Song, by Toad. His writing can be found over at the Steinberg Principle , where he habitually does crazy things like confessing to liking Lionel Ritchie . Don't worry though, I know how achingly cool my readers are - there'll be none of that sort of shit here.] I've written about Phil Quirie's music a couple of times over at The Steinberg Principle but I think it's only fair that since I have the attention of a bigger audience on Matthew's page I [...]

Hidden Shoal Recordings is proud to announce the digital pre-release of the eagerly awaited sophomore album by American ambient craftsman Wes Willenbring . Close, But Not Too Close sees Willenbring develop on the gorgeous palette of tones explored on acclaimed debut Someone, Somewhere Else . As with Willenbring's debut, Close, But Not Too Close is all about time in both it's broadest and most discrete sense. There is a deliberation present in it's composition that makes for a level of engagement far beyond any easy notion [...]
I had intended on reviewing Firekites' album The Bowery a while ago, but I guess it never got past the point of being just a draft. I liked what I wrote, but I think I'll just scrap that draft and write up a quick one that gets right to the point. Firekites' album The Bowery was released in 2008, so I'm in no way claiming to be on top of things here, but if most of you are like me, then you've never heard of them to start with. And that's a shame and the very [...]

Leyland Kirby sadly, the future is no longer what it was - trilogy (2009, History Always Favours The Winners) RIYL = The Disintegration Loops , The Sinking of the Titanic , The Caretaker, Eluvium Holy wow...Leyland Kirby has just pulled out all the stops with sadly, the future is no longer what it was . Having only been introduced to him recently through his incredible Persistent Repetition of Phrases album from last year under The Caretaker moniker, I am doing all I can to catch up. And now, [...]

If the Seattle-based The Sight Below represents anything physical it's the human pulse, subtle but resonant at all times. Subdued by waves of guitar and synth, the forthcoming Murmur EP is a more concise, beat-driven pulse that pushes the astounding sounds of 2008's masterpiece Glider into something more listenable for non-shoegaze/ambient types. As for the believers and followers this is simply another amazing body of work. Murmur drops October 27th [...]

this tickling in my throat is thickening my voice Massive Attack - Pray for Rain (ft Tunde Adebimpe) i am so happy to hear from massive attack. i can honestly say that very few bands have inspired me to the point as this Bristol duo has. they have survived the collapse of the 90's and the subsequent cave-in of trip hop everywhere, a genre that turned its obsession with bass and chillout into [...]

Hidden Shoal Recordings is proud to announce the release of the first single taken from the eagerly awaited sophomore album by American ambient craftsman Wes Willenbring . ' Oh, Most ' sees Willenbring develop on the gorgeous palette of tones explored on his debut album Somewhere Someone Else . The track is submerged in icy washes of guitar, under which piano and bass meet in a rhythmic valium struggle. As with Willenbring's best work 'Oh, Most' is all about time in both its broadest and most discrete sense. There is a deliberation [...]

Part of Portland indie film darling Matt McCormick's heart has always belonged to the music scene. In between creating and screening his own experimental film projects, managing international film label Peripheral Produce and directing the PDX Film Festival, he's found time through the years to collaborate with musicians, compose soundtracks for some of his own short films, and direct music videos for The Shins , Sleater-Kinney , YACHT and other acts. So it's not surprising that McCormick recruited some musically-minded friends to collaborate in his first full-length feature film. James [...]

Watch me gush: Moving Mountains are one of 'those' bands. When you hear them, everything falls in to place just right, and it's like you've been looking for them your entire life. Life affirming, if you will. With songs full of massive highs, those moments that feel so perfect, it's no surprise that the young, mostly-bearded four-piece from Purchase, NY have received glowing reviews, and been tapped for support slots with Kevin Devine, Caspian and their (and my) personal heroes, Thursday. Not bad for a band that started in high-school and never planned on going anywhere. [...]

timwarrenmusic under_score (2009, Square Root Records) RIYL = Dntl, Eluvium, Stars of the Lid Tim Warren records music under the lowercase jumble of timwarrenmusic, which seems pretty self explanatory if not just a little bit odd, but there is something sorta resonant in the Warren's recording title and the music that he has put out with under_score . Each track on the album is made up of fairly simplistic pop lengthed ambience, all working in its own little unobtrusive sphere. The music doesn't make a case for itself as groundbreaking in its genre, [...]

Harlem Shakes - Technicolor Health As discussed yesterday, indie rock as we used to know it - I think we can draw the line in 2004, with the explosion of Garden State , the Postal Service, the Arcade Fire, [...]

Acclamato dalla critica, "All Is Wild, All Is Silent" si nutre di un'appendice gustosa e saporita. Svariati amici della band texana (da Eluvium a Tiny Vipers, passando per Peter Broderick ed Helios) hanno rivisitato i brani di uno dei migliori album del 2009: c'è chi ha scelto un percorso decisamente personale e chi, invece, [...]

Austin-based instrumental band Balmorhea released their third LP earlier this year, and shortly thereafter a few of their musically-minded friends took a song of their choice and applied the remix treatment. The compiled remix album features the likes of Eluvium, Tiny Vipers, Library Tapes and Helios adding their own unique, subtle touches to Balmorhea's cinematic sound. Head over to the Austin-based record label Western Vinyl to find out more about the release, and visit Austin Sound for a nice review of the source material. Balmorhea - "Night In the [...]
