Despite the myriad awesome new albums hitting the information superhighway these days - Yeasayer, Beach House, Emancipator, Vampire Weekend - I find myself in a slight music rut. While Paul Simon has been helping, it has been saccharine pop getting me through the day recently. Ke$ha teamed up with white-boy faves 3OH!3 is an electro kick in the pants. Her voice is honestly pretty bad, but damn is Ke$ha catchy and thats always a good thing. Cobra Starship featuring Leighton Meester from Gossip Girl? Sign me up. Almost as good as Kobe Bryant rapping and Tyra Banks singing the chorus [...]

Emancipator Safe In The Steep Cliffs (1320) [ELECTRORGANIC] If you turned on the radio in 1939 and heard the Ink Spots' "If I Didn't Care," you'd be able to easily identify crooning voices, a softly strummed acoustic guitar and a touch of piano. Turn the radio on today and playing "name that sound" is a much tougher chore. Only the most astute producer could identify the software, samples, effects and recording techniques used to make a hit in the 21st century. But even with such [...]

I've noticed a trend in recent Indie Shuffle posts: something about the gray and snow and seemingly never ending days of cold have got us covering the type of electronic material that makes us both comfortable, yet keeps us awake while inside for long days. greenland by emancipator Late night 'trip hop/downtempo' vibes via the homie, Dom Corleone : "Safe In The Steep Cliffs represents the tightest, most unique, most organic beats I've made in the last three years. This album has a new palette of sounds and samples from around the world, including more original recordings (guitar/violin/mandolin/banjo) and new guest artists including Japanese jazz musician Uyama Hiroto . It's ominous and overgrown, dense and ethereal. And epic. Always epic. " Always epic, huh? Agree? If you dig, you [...]

I can't help but revel at the magnificence that is "Colouring of Pigeons." This is the first track to be released from an opera created by the Knife in collaboration with Mt. Sims, Planningtorock, and the Danish performance art group Hotel Pro Forma. In the course of 11 minutes, you'd be taken into a riveting sensory emporium. Karin Dreijer-Andersson and the melodic percussion are, in my opinion, the prime factors that make this track entirely unforgettable. Best 11 minutes of my week, right here. :: The Knife - Colouring of Pigeons (ft. Mt. Sims [...]

***Finally I am posting these decade end lists. Gaaah I love and hate lists. They enlighten me towards new music yet at the same time they're ridiculously subjective. From one point to the next an album can be the best and not depending on the season, the weather, my emotions, whether I'm under the influence, yada yada yada. Because of all this, the numbers on my list aren't a ranking system of worst to best-because I think they're all equally fantastic-they're simply a form of organization. But, a few times on the lists I will put a clear marker on [...]

Sufjan Stevens – Illinois Originally reviewed: 12 July 2005 Firstly, let's get a few facts straight: Illinois is the best album I have heard so far this year; Illinois is the best album I've heard in a long time; and that's not just my opinion either; many critics agree with me on this one. Also another fact: this could be the longest review I have ever written. Why? The album contains twenty-two songs, most of which are worth at least a page's discussion. However, I plan to [...]

Wer [...]

***So I have my top lists compiled, I just haven't been able to fully write it out yet. And since I will be in New York for New Year's, my top lists will not be out until I get back. Super sorry! I am super excited for y'all to read it still! And within my mixtapes which I DID finish (phewf) are a lot of my favorites of the year and of the decade! Have a great new years and enjoy the mixtapes! Stay tuned for my top lists within two weeks!*** Hope everyone had a good new [...]

Moby's latest offering, Wait For Me , comes quickly on the heels of last year's Last Night . More introspective than recent predecessors, the album at times feels almost weightless beneath the gentle gust of cinematic strings and breathy female vocals. Despite the brisk turnaround, the record is neither rushed nor insubstantial. Reminds us of: Sigur Rós | Emancipator | sweeping pans over majestic natural beauty, the widescreen (2.35:1) version, of course Moby : ( Website / Myspace [...]

[Brakes Brakes Brakes] [Sissy Wish] I'm constantly trying to challenge myself, my music and my live-shows. Right now I find myself in a world of cheap synthesizers, toy organs and fuzz-guitars. I just ate up my band and put them in a box, so I could afford to go on a tour in America. So suddenly I turned out to be a purely electronic duo from Mars, and the respond from the crowd was fantastic, enormous, x-large! I'm constantly seeking new ways to express myself through music, and sometimes [...]

I may be getting ahead of myself here a little bit, but its almost October and fall is without a doubt in the air. A comment on a post from last week got me thinking not only about new music this fall, but also my favorite music that embodies the fall. More so than autumn necessarily, Emancipator really evokes the changing of seasons for me. More specifically, Emancipator's tracks really conjure up a sense of anticipation and progress. Even though it is titled First Snow, my absolute favorite track from Emancipator could sum up my feelings for the coming of [...]

Suicide Sundaes – stop your grinnin' and drop your linen. Every Sunday electblake and jsully of Earmilk will bring you the weeks dirty servings, and some old favorites through a throwdown-throwback to simpler times. A time when bangers were big, remixes were bigger, the bassline bled, and we didn't care about anything as long as came in kicking and left screaming. To hell with sketchy sunday, we want to shove another dragon down the hole. This long weekend we pretty much burned down every watering hole around town. We'll [...]
Post from: The Galley Boys Emancipator - Soon It Will Be Cold Enough to Build Fires

Ahhhh, Fall. We all know what that means in New Orleans: hurricanes, football, Halloween and the return of touring bands. The other week the Republic announced it's fall line up and we mentioned how One Eyed Jacks was going to drop a pretty nice one. Well here it is; and we are happy to be presenting two shows, the Horrors and A Place to Bury Strangers . More on that later. 8/20--The Warlocks with The Morning After Girls plus The Vandelles(doors at 7) /// Fast Times '80's Night at 10pm 8/21--The [...]
