An argument could be made that the world is being bombarded with TOO many festival choices. It's a given that should you grace (or live in approximation to) a metropolis, you're going to find at least one festival that draws your attention, takes your money, and drives you to get out the doors and into the crowds. The purpose of these festivals, no matter the impression, is to unite fans and artists into one large consortium--it's a chance for a laundry list of your favorites to play in one place during designated time frames. As it [...]

Every year (well for the last 4 or 5) when Pitchfork releases their best 50 albums/100 singles, I always feel obligated to go through all the artists and try to discover/rediscover some I've never heard of. Why?- I'm not really sure, but probably because all my other friends/journalists/music critics/anybody who listens to similar music does. Obviously my bias is towards electronic music, but im all open ears. From this years countdown Ive heard some new artists I find particularly interesting-- Air France and Portishead (rediscovered in this case) for example. However, I never view Pitchfork as the "ultimate" source of [...]

Name a cool band form Oakland. Metallica? Think again. The Hot Toddies are doo-wop bubblegum pop revivalists that proof that you can be cool and cute. Their album Smell the Mitten is picked with smart infectious tunes that are like a freak summer breeze in the cold winter. Founded in 2004 by Heidi Bodeson and Erin Skidmore who tamed up as a songwriting unit they expanded into a quartet of pop prom queens who will the haunt the dreams of pubescent boys and lure the music lover's attention who can have [...]

Photo by Frank Yang Some people spend Thanksgiving with their families. I spend mine with rock'n'roll bands. Two years ago at Pop Montreal , last year at The Phoneix with The National and this year again at the Phoneix with Okkervil River and Crooked Fingers . It's okay - my parents have a habit of being out of the country on Thanksgiving so it's not like I'm a total no-account son. Just mostly. Anyways. It's not like I was the only [...]

There are two stages bands at the street fest this year, including Bay Bridged interviewees Excuses for Skipping ( interview here ) and Von Iva ( [...]

This week, our podcast spotlights Excuses for Skipping , a San Francisco indie rock quartet whose 2007 debut Out of Work Early has earned them a bevy of strong reviews for its mix of spacey experimental elements and thick soaring melodies. The album showcases a strong control of both dynamics and layering, as the band can use powerful stacked vocal harmonies and guitars just as well as it can deconstruct those textures into compelling moody pieces. It's catchy, dense rock with strong moments spread liberally throughout. As [...]
