In case you missed it, Phoenix's "Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix" was my 13th favorite album of 2009 . Of course the song "1901" was also my 2nd favorite song of last year . Basically, I'm saying that I've got a strong liking and respect for the band. I hope you do too, especially since their fan base has grown like wildfire in the past few months. Anyways, I featured Phoenix on a special acoustic Live Friday session last November, and that was so popular I've decided they deserve another turn. Before we get into this, let me [...]

photo by Matt Glasset A few years ago, Arcade Fire provided me with ultimately my greatest concert experience. But the one unsettling thing about their performance was the seeming lack of happiness and joy. Despite the uplifting nature of the band's songs, it seemed tough for Win Butler to put on a smile. So it's pretty great to see a band with songs almost as epic and almost as uplifting as Arcade Fire's with a lead singer who smiles. A lot. That's what makes Steel Train's live show so phenomenal: they have a ridiculous [...]
Earlier this year, a coworker took me as her guest to the Sony riverboat showcase for the CRS conference. That was when I first found out about Jason Michael Carroll. Sharing the stage with big guns like Brad Paisley, Kenny Chesney, Gretchen Wilson, Carrie Underwood, and so many more, he held his own. At the beginning, I labeled him as a boy band Country singer – dreamy with puppy dog eyes, and heart grabbing choreography; plus, an arsenal of mega hits. I believe he has two records out with over five of the songs reaching the Country Top 40 [...]
It's the 25 th of December and, aside from Christmas, we've assembled 25 of our favorite albums from 2009. There were some sensational albums this year and being forced to only pick out a fraction of our favorites was certainly frustrating. However, our ears have heard tons of music over the past year and we're proud of our picks - some you'll be expecting, while unfamiliar others you're going to need to spin soon. Without further ado, here are The Best Albums of 2009 : [...]
This is the Tomas Halberstad , top ten, in no particular order but still numbered (for your convenience), off the top of my head, list for 2009. 01. Twitter. Really helps me get my message across to no one when I have no message to get across to anyone. http://www.twitter.com/tomasha lberstad 02. Little Dragon . I think their record "Machine dreams" is the only record that came out in 2009 [...]

Time again for the obligatory year end list. However, ours is a bit different than others you may have seen. For example, this list is not enumerated. Empirically ranking albums rather trivializes the music, yes? Nor is the list in any particular order, save for the fact that we assembled it based loosely on aesthetics - meaning, we encourage you to mash on the little javascript media player in the bottom left-hand corner and enjoy our best-of picks as a mixtape or an uninterrupted block of music. Not only is this a fine collection of altered states laments, but each [...]
Last year, the lot of us put together some of our more unconventional year end lists from 2008. We had a lot of fun doing so, and have decided to make it a yearly thing. John Wenzel ( Denver Post Reverb) Local 1. The Jim Jims - Bottom of the City EP 2. Everything Absent or Distorted - The Great Collapse 3. Wentworth Kersey - (O) EP 4. Houses - Summer EP [...]

Frankly, just being able to talk and about this show in the months leading up to it, not only with friends, but on emails, and with all the people on HT, made the whole thing so exciting. I've seen a lot of standout concerts and a lot of monumental sporting events in my day and nothing will ever come close to the energy level in the crowd that night. I think this one might just end up on top of my all time list. You could probably argue that musically, this one doesn't hold a flame to some other stuff, [...]

DROPA is a beat menace out of Boston, as one of the initial releases I guess you could say he's stirring the Breakfast of Champs crew's brew. Shifting pitches like out of country bank accounts, the one-dude project has released a slew of free tapes online leading up to October's Dunk Tank which features remixes of Easyboy, Max Alper, Lord Jeff, and BlackBox as well as an arsenal of heavy artillery and well thought out sampling. You can pick up the cassette here for just $4 (or 3 tapes for $10) and if [...]

After a summer of hard work, the payoff is here: Flawless Hustle proudly presents Money Isn't Real , our first compilation. If there's one topic that's a constant in Hip-Hop is money. Whether heads are making it, spending it or stealing it, the scene (and our world) is obsessed with money. Hell, one of the reasons people hustle is to get loot, so we ourselves know the power of a dollar, which got us thinking: what the fuck is money, really? It's an interesting concept, and was a great jumping off point for this debut project, so [...]
The world of Phish has, and always will be, centered around the live experience. Simply a means to an end, the band's studio efforts provide little more in the eyes of their fans than an expanded live arsenal. In a recent interview Phish keyboardist Page McConnell was presented with this observation, to which he replied, "It's interesting… when we're in the studio making a record, I already know that most of the fans aren't going to think much of it. So many albums we've released have come out, and the hardcore fanbase doesn't really embrace it." [...]
Tomorrow's release-date schedule is pretty glutted with albums that-gasp!-might get people to actually spend money on music, from Madonna's latest greatest-hits collection to new albums by the spunky likes of Miranda Lambert and Paramore. In order to help you navigate through this week, might I suggest a friendly game of Buy/Download/Kill, in which each album receives one of the three fates outlined by the game's title? My personal preferences after the jump. BUY Mariah Carey, Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel . Hey, it's only [...]

Le Loup's sophomore effort, Family , was released earlier this week. I'm not going to pretend to be too authoritative on the band or the album as I've pretty much just come across them today; I had to wikipedia the first sentence. The tracks I have heard are pretty good, though. My little reconnaissance mission to Wikipedia revealed that they're from Baltimore, which seems to be a strangely productive city in terms of cultural output of late. Initial impressions will probably remind you of Baltimore anyway; that's not because their lyrics are concerned with The [...]

Eazy E was the first to admit that he wasn't exactly a role model. Yet that didn't stop millions of teenagers kids all across the world looking up to the alter-ego of business brain Eric Wright and agreeing that this was indeed one gangsta muthafucka worthy of respect. Many hardcore Hip-hoppers have since cursed the day that guns, bitches and bling became one of the cornerstones of the movement, but secretly they were never directing their ill feelings towards originators such as Eazy E . Without him [...]

thanks karen aragon & impose I don't intend for this to seem romantic, but a few weeks ago I had a sit down brunch with HEALTH , minus Jake, and Jake Friedman of Lovepump United. We met the day after the band played the Williamsburg Waterfront, when I wrote this , and the day before they took off for Europe. Previous to this I spent a few days with the dudes in Los Angeles assisting their shoot for "Die Slow" in our ol' Out Of Asia warehouse putting us already a few Tecate and [...]

This has to be one of the longest gestating posts in the history of the internets. Seven months. But, I didn't become an American hero by letting a couple dozen soul-crushing roadblocks stop me. So, let's get our Clarence White on. "We're getting standing ovations for the first time. We're tighter and more together. We're a much, much better band." --Roger McGuinn in Rolling Stone , late 1969 1970 was The Byrds' last great year of sustained excellence. They played around 200 gigs in the US and Europe and were [...]
