After years of backing Canada's indie-elite, folk rocker Alfie Jurvanen took his Robbie Robertson -esque step out of the shadows last summer (Jurvanen went with live mics mind you). Under the moniker Bahamas, which is inspired by the Wreckless Eric classic (I'd Go the) Whole Wide World , Jurvanen released his debut LP "Pink Strat" on July 21st of 2009, via the Toronto based Nevado Records; the album includes easily the best cover of said Wreckless Eric song you will hear this year. The catalyst for Jurvanen's foray into solo waters ended up being a 2-year [...]
Here is video of Beck, Jeff Tweedy, Jeff Tweedy's kid, and Feist jamming on "Lawrence of Euphoria" by Skip Spence. This is another product of the Record Club series I mentioned last summer. They have already done album length covers of of Leonard Cohen and the Velvet Underground , going on to cover Oar , the 1969 solo album by Skip Spence of Jefferson Airplane.
Last week, a new viral sensation 'hit the internet.' It is some rap group from South Africa, and no1 was able to tell whether or not they were 'real.' Does n e 1 know what the deal with Die Antwoord is? Not sure if they are ternative, post-TheStreets/eminem indie rap, or just some meme that was packaged by a high priced marketing firm who paid a huge tastemaker to blog about them. Watched some rap video that was supposed to be a 'raw profile' of them. Only really feel confused. Not in a [...]
Three reasons to strap on your snow shoes and trek on over to the Beat Kitchen tonight... 1. Reading Dawn Landes' bio is like reading a who's who of influences. Apparently you'll find her style nestled comfortably between the grand old dames of country, the White Stripes, the Black Keys, Pavement and Cat Power. The reason her influences line up this way might be due to the fact that Dawn has resided in Branson, MO, Louisville, KT, and Brooklyn. The Brooklyn in New York even. Call her the human sponge. [...]
Filed under: The Hit List Wintertime means cold weather and heavy snowfall for those of us in non-tropical climes, which is a mixed blessing. Sure, there's snowboarding and snowmen, but how does that help when your car is stuck in a snowdrift? More than a few artists have mined the rich metaphoric potential of winter in music videos, usually to melancholy and SAD effect (that's Seasonal Affective Disorder, by the way). Baby, it's cold outside, so read on for some frosty encouragement while you thaw out your fingers with a mug [...]
Jamie Lidell Compass (Warp) Releasing: 18 May Beck and Feist are just two of the musical luminaries stepping in for an assist on UK blue-eyed soul meister Jamie Lidell's new platter due out in May. This goes beyond the casual guest appearance, as both Beck and Feist wrote tunes with Lidell for Compass. Oh, and some folks from Wilco and Grizzly Bear turned up too. This should be a good one and here's a stream...

On December 23rd, the Washington D.C. area received 16 inches of snow, making it the sixth largest snow storm the area had seen in recorded history. Shortly thereafter, I escaped to my home country of South Africa, where summer reigned supreme. I thought, perhaps, that D.C. had seen the worst of the bad weather, but upon my return I was greeted with quite the opposite. Since the New Year, we have been hammered. Last weekend, we toppled Christmas's record, with nearby areas reporting up to 3 feet of the cold, fluffy stuff. With another 10-20 inches predicted for [...]

The cynical part of me thinks White Hinterland's rebirth as a dubstep-tinged neo-Kate Bush is the result of the inexplicable success of acts like Bat For Lashes and the ongoing Cute British Keyboardists movement. That, and the Casey Dienel-fronted band's debut was a rare thing – gentle but biting jazz-folk far too fresh and wild for Starbucks-swilling Feist listeners. (Myself, um, excluded.) But what we've lost in the coffee shop department, we've gained in everything else: "Icarus," the first single from White Hinterland's March-due Kairos , is a serious songwriter's answer to the dark electro evocations of [...]
The new Jamie Lidell LP goes by the name of 'Compass' and in case you were wondering, it's sounding pretty gosh darn awesome as far as we're concerned. Due on March 18th through the Warp label, the record features some of the best guest-spots we've seen in sometime including Feist, Beck and his keyboardist Brian LeBarton, Pat Sansone of Wilco, three-quarters of Grizzly Bear (all but Ed Droste), songwriter Gonzales and a few more to boot.

Jamie Lidell returns this year with his new album 'Compass', out on May 18th via Warp. The follow up to 2008's 'Jim' was recorded in Los Angeles, New York and Canada and features contributions from Feist, Beck, Gonzales, Chris Taylor of Chris Bear Grizzly Bear and Pat Sansone of Wilco. First taste, the track "Compass", sounds like nothing Lidell has done before. Listen Carefully... Stream:> Jamie Lidell: "Compass"

"Compass", nuovo album di Jamie Lidell , uscirà il 17 maggio. Beck , Feist , Grizzly Bear e Gonzales tra gli ospiti del ragazzo inglese.
Jamie Lidell is gearing up for a new record called Compass, due May 8th. It will feature a who's who of strong musicians, including Beck and Feist. Also, Wilco keyboardist Pat Sansone, and Chris Taylor, the ridiculously talented multi-instrumentalist, from...
The winter months having you feeling a bit down? News of the upcoming Jamie Lidell release will put a little pep into even the most frigid of gaits. Hearing of the new release, excitement started to boil up; just how will Lidell follow up the 2007 release Jim, which featured background vocals by Nikka Acosta, and collaborators Beck, Mocky, and Gonzalez? In short, with some of today's most exhilarating artists. After working with Beck and his most recent Record Club recording , Lidell kept the party going with recordings for his own solo-release, [...]
